Protect a digital library in three separate ways before a storefront closes: download every owned game, DLC item, and available update; create platform-supported save backups; and preserve the account and purchase records that prove your licenses. Keep the original console or storage card intact, make a second copy on separate storage, and test that your backup can actually be restored. A copied file is not automatically a playable replacement: account authentication, console encryption, a launcher, or a still-running server may remain necessary.
The safest schedule is to do this while purchases, redownloads, and account services are all working. A store can stop accepting new transactions without immediately stopping downloads, but any later redownload promise is subject to change.

What a storefront closure actually changes
“The store is closed” can describe several different events. A company may disable new purchases first, leave redownloads and updates running for a period, and terminate online play or other network features later. Treat each service separately when planning your archive.
Purchase shutdown is not necessarily a download shutdown
Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS example shows why timing matters. Nintendo ended purchases in Nintendo eShop for those systems at 5:00 p.m. Pacific on March 27, 2023. Its notice also said that, “Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” “For the foreseeable future” is not a permanent guarantee, so a working redownload service is an opportunity to finish your archive, not a reason to postpone it.

Online features can end on a different date
Nintendo separately ended online play and other online communication for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on April 8, 2024. A locally stored game and save can therefore remain usable while matchmaking, leaderboards, downloads that depend on a server, or other network features no longer work. Record which parts of a title require a service rather than assuming a local copy preserves the complete original experience.
Preserve three different things
Use separate checklists for the software package, your progress, and the rights to use the software. They are related but interchangeable only in limited cases.

Keep these layers together in your documentation, but store copies independently. For example, an external drive can contain an inventory and a copy of permitted data while the original SD card remains in the console. Do not claim that an ordinary file copy defeats digital-rights management or preserves online-only functions.

Work through this checklist before the service is at risk
1. Inventory every entitlement
Sign in to the account that owns the purchases and write down the platform, title, region, edition, DLC, and current update version for each item. Include free downloads and Virtual Console or similarly reissued titles; they can be easy to overlook because they may not appear beside retail purchases. Save a copy of the purchase history and note the account’s recovery email, authentication method, and any console or user profile associated with it.
Keep the account active. On Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s redownload guidance says that after a format, the Nintendo Network ID associated with purchases must be present. A game file on a card is not a substitute for that identity check.
2. Download while the servers are healthy
Use the platform’s normal redownload list and install every owned game, DLC item, and available update. Let each download finish, launch the title once, and check for a prompt that requires a further patch or license validation. If storage is limited, prioritize irreplaceable DLC and titles that are no longer sold, then plan a larger-capacity compatible card or drive before deleting anything.

Do not delete a title to make room until its save data has been backed up and you have confirmed the platform’s deletion behavior. A redownloadable game and its save are often handled separately.

3. Create native save backups
Prefer the platform’s supported save-data tool over an improvised copy. Native backups preserve the metadata the console expects and reveal restrictions such as title limits, account binding, or a requirement that the software and backup remain on the same card. Record the date of every successful backup.
4. Make a second copy in another location
Keep the original console or storage card untouched and create a second copy on separate storage. “Separate” means a different physical device, not merely another folder on the same card. For irreplaceable data, a third copy stored away from the console protects against theft, fire, accidental deletion, or a single drive failure.
5. Verify before you change anything
Compare the inventory with the console’s installed-title list, check that expected file sizes are present, and open a few games to confirm that their saves load. If the platform offers a restore operation, test it only on a disposable or already documented state because a restore may overwrite current progress. Keep the original media until this check succeeds.
Nintendo Wii U and 3DS: the concrete case
Timeline and remaining functions
Nintendo’s official notice states: “As of March 27, 2023 at 5:00 PM Pacific Time, it is no longer possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The same notice says that redownloading games and DLC and receiving software updates would remain possible “for the foreseeable future.” Nintendo then ended online play and other online communication on April 8, 2024. These are three different milestones: buying, obtaining existing content, and using network features.

For downloaded Nintendo 3DS software, save data is stored on the SD card. Nintendo’s Save Data Backup menu creates backups for downloadable software and Virtual Console software. Use this sequence while the title is installed and the card is readable:

- Confirm identity: sign in and verify the Nintendo Network ID and purchase history. Write down the account and console details before changing storage or formatting anything.
- Finish downloads: install every owned title, DLC item, and available update that you intend to preserve. Start each title once so an unfinished installation or first-run update does not surprise you later.
- Open the backup tool: on the 3DS, go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Backup.
- Back up each supported title: select a game and create its save backup. Repeat for every downloadable or Virtual Console title that the menu lists.
- Label the record: note the title, region, software version or update date, backup date, SD-card identifier, and the account that owns the license.
- Duplicate carefully: keep the original card with the console and make a separate archival copy only in ways the platform permits. An ordinary copy does not remove Nintendo’s encryption or account checks.
The last step in the sequence is a documentation and storage step, not a license bypass. If a card becomes unreadable, the copied files may be useful for recovery, but they do not guarantee that another console can decrypt or run them.
Operational limits you must plan around

Choosing SD-card storage for this workflow
The 3DS Save Data Backup function requires SD-card media, and Nintendo’s manual requires the software and backup to stay on that same card. Choose a card with enough capacity for the installed library and verify that its format and capacity are compatible with your particular 3DS model. Before relying on a new card, let the console format it through its supported process, install one non-critical title, create a backup, and confirm that the backup appears in the menu. Keep the original card as the reference copy rather than immediately treating the new card as the only archive.
How to make and protect the second copy
Preserve the original first
Label the original console, SD card, or other storage with the platform and date. Do not use it for experiments, repeated formatting, or space-clearing after the backup is complete. If you need to inspect files, work from the duplicate and return the original to protected storage.
Use clear, dated records
Create a simple inventory with one line per title. Include:
- platform and hardware model;
- title, edition, region, and title ID if the platform displays one;
- installed software and update version or date;
- DLC and add-on items;
- save-backup date and backup-tool format;
- which physical card or drive contains the copy; and
- the purchasing account and any console-association notes.
Keep a copy of this inventory away from the console. It lets you detect a missing game or stale backup without repeatedly handling the original media.
Do not confuse duplication with emulation or account transfer
A bit-for-bit or file-level copy can protect against a failing card, but it does not promise portability. Encrypted storage, signed software, account entitlements, console-specific keys, and server-side activation can all remain in force. If a platform does not document an export or restore path, describe your copy as an archive for recovery, not as a guaranteed way to run the game on new hardware.

What to verify on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, or another storefront
Procedures differ by service and change over time. Do not apply the 3DS menu path to another platform or assume that a cloud icon means you possess a standalone installer. Before a closure, obtain current official instructions for that service and answer these questions for every title:

The available evidence for this guide establishes the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U workflow above; it does not establish current, platform-specific export procedures for Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, or other storefronts. The title is missing from the redownload list
Check that you are signed in to the purchasing account, that the console is associated with it, and that the title was not bought under a different regional account. Compare the purchase history with your inventory before deleting anything. If the service still cannot validate the entitlement, preserve the account and transaction records and stop changing the original storage.
The save-backup option is unavailable
Confirm that the title is downloadable software or another supported type, that the SD card is inserted and readable, and that the game is fully installed. Some software categories may not be eligible for the platform’s native backup tool. Do not replace a missing supported backup with an unverified file copy and then assume it will restore.
A restore reports that the software is on the wrong card
On 3DS, Nintendo requires the software and backup to remain on the same SD card. Return the original card, confirm that the title is installed there, and use the Save Data Backup menu from that state. Keep newer progress separately because a successful restore overwrites the existing save.

Nintendo states that deleting downloaded software from the SD card also loses its save data, even when the game itself can be redownloaded. Stop using the card, retain the original, and check your dated native backup before attempting a fresh download. A redownload alone does not recreate the deleted progress.

The console or card has failed
Use the documented recovery path with the original account and the preserved card or backup. If the platform uses encryption or console binding, a computer copy may not be readable by itself. Avoid repeated repair utilities or formatting attempts on the only original; work from a duplicate whenever possible.
The game launches but online functions do not
That result may be expected after a network-service shutdown. Separate the local campaign or offline modes from matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud synchronization, and server-hosted content in your inventory. A successful local restore cannot restart a discontinued online service.
Maintain the archive after the closure
Recheck on a schedule
At least periodically, connect the archival drive, read the inventory, and verify that representative game files and save archives can be opened or recognized by the original platform. Replace storage that reports errors, becomes unusually slow, or reaches the end of its expected service life. Keep both the original and second copy until the replacement has been checked.
Update records when progress changes
After a major achievement or long play session, create a new native save backup if the platform supports it and mark the date. Retain older milestones only when they have personal value; otherwise, clearly label which backup is current so a future restore does not select an obsolete state.
Protect account recovery
Review the recovery email, authentication device, and password manager entry for the purchasing account. Store recovery codes in a separate secure location. This is part of the archive because an intact game package and save can still be unusable if the account cannot be recovered.
The practical rule
Finish downloads while redownload servers work, back up saves with the platform’s own tool, preserve the purchasing account, and keep two physically separate copies. For Nintendo 3DS, leave the software and save backup on the same SD card, remember the 30-title limit, and never delete downloaded software before confirming a separate save copy. Treat every local file as one part of a preservation plan—not as proof that licensing, encryption, updates, or online play will continue indefinitely.
