How to Back Up Digital Comics and Ebooks Before a Platform Shuts Down

An account library or offline app is not necessarily a backup. Check each title’s export options, save permitted files, and keep readable copies in more than one place.

A library visible in an account or available offline in an app is not necessarily a backup. To preserve a title beyond a platform shutdown, check whether that specific book or comic can be downloaded as a file, save any permitted export, and keep verified copies in separate places. DRM, publisher restrictions, rentals, and title eligibility can limit what you can export.

What counts as a backup—and what does not?

A backup is an additional copy that can restore information if access to the master copy is lost. The National Digital Stewardship Alliance defines backup as “Additional copies of a digital asset made to protect against loss due to unintended destruction or corruption of the primary set of digital assets.” A title listed in your account is not, by itself, a file you control. Nor does an app’s offline-reading switch prove that you have an independently stored copy.

A local file is useful only if you can still open it. A DRM-protected EPUB or PDF may require authorized software and account authentication, and it may not work on your preferred reader. A backup drive does not remove DRM or guarantee that a title can be transferred to another store or device.

Back up your collection in six steps

  1. Inventory the titles. Record the platform, title or series, purchase or borrowing status, and whether the account shows an explicit export or download option. Prioritize the titles you care about most and any announced cutoff dates.
  2. Check the current instructions for each platform and title. Look for a named EPUB, PDF, or comic-file download control. Eligibility varies by title; a missing option may reflect publisher restrictions, rental status, or another exclusion. Do not assume a whole library can be exported in bulk.
  3. Download permitted files while you still have access. Keep the original downloaded file unchanged. If it requires Adobe Digital Editions or other authorized software, retain the relevant account or authentication information and test the file in an authorized reader. This guide does not cover DRM circumvention.
  4. Organize the files and record what they are. Use descriptive filenames and folders, and keep a simple inventory with the title, platform, format, and download date. The Library of Congress personal archiving guidance recommends descriptive filenames and an organized folder structure for personal digital records.
  5. Make separate copies. The Library of Congress advises: “Make at least two copies of your selected documents—more copies are better.” Keep copies on separate media, such as a computer and a portable external hard drive, and in different locations as far apart as practical; internet storage can serve as another location. One drive alone is not a complete backup plan.
  6. Test and refresh the copies. Open files after copying to confirm they remain readable. The Library of Congress advises checking files at least once a year and creating new media copies every five years or when necessary.

What export options do major ebook platforms offer?

These are platform-specific routes and restrictions, not a promise that every title is exportable. Check the current instructions and the controls shown for your own titles before relying on an export.

Platform Where to check What may limit the export
Amazon Kindle Manage Your Content and Devices; inspect each book’s available options. Effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB/PDF versions of eligible confirmed DRM-free Kindle books. Books with DRM applied remain limited to Kindle apps and devices. Kindle Unlimited and other borrowed books are excluded. For older books whose DRM had been disabled before December 9, 2025, Amazon says the publisher must explicitly confirm the DRM-free download option. Amazon KDP’s DRM guidance describes these conditions.
Kobo My Account → My Books → title’s Actions menu → Download → Download file. Kobo says most purchased books are DRM-protected; those EPUB/PDF files require Adobe Digital Editions to export to another manufacturer’s device. DRM-free files can be copied directly to a connected device. Availability and format vary by title. Kobo’s export instructions explain the route and distinction.
Google Play Books Library & devices → Books → title’s More menu → Export, then choose Download EPUB or Download PDF. Some publishers do not allow exports; rentals and large book files cannot be exported. An ASCM download requires Adobe Digital Editions, and Google says most Play books cannot be opened on Kindle devices. Google’s support page currently also displays a notice about Adobe Digital Editions exports for previously downloaded EPUBs, while saying new EPUB downloads and offline access through Android/iOS apps remain available. Because notices can change, consult the live page for the current state. Google Play’s export instructions list the steps and exclusions.

How to preserve comics and check device compatibility

For a comic, check both whether the store allows a file download and whether the resulting format works in authorized software or on your intended device. Kobo lists CBZ and CBR comic formats among formats supported on its eReaders; it also lists EPUB, EPUB2/3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI for eReaders/Desktop. Format support only describes compatibility—it does not mean a bookstore will let you export a purchase. Kobo says Adobe DRM EPUB/PDF downloads require Adobe Digital Editions for transfer to a Kobo eReader. See Kobo’s file-format list for its stated support.

  • Record the exact file extension and any DRM or software requirement shown by the platform.
  • Test a permitted file with the authorized reader or device you intend to use before relying on it.
  • Do not treat a device’s support for CBZ, CBR, EPUB, or PDF as evidence that a store purchase can be exported.

If a platform is closing or moving your library

A library transfer is a separate, conditional service—not a substitute for keeping permitted files yourself. Kobo says a transfer from a former provider is possible only if that provider arranged it with Kobo. The former provider supplies a code or link and instructions, and some books may not transfer; the provider may offer downloads for those titles. Kobo also warns that the old library may no longer be accessible or downloadable after the provider’s specified date. See Kobo’s library-transfer guidance. Follow the closing provider’s instructions promptly, check which titles are included, and independently retain any exports the platform permits.
