Start by deciding whether there is a problem that needs intervention. A flowering plant may be useful forage rather than a weed, and the presence of insects does not by itself mean plants are being harmed. Identify the plant or pest and assess the damage before choosing a response. For uncertain or recurring problems, seek advice from a local weed-identification or extension service.

A nature strip is public-facing space, and the resident may not control the land or road reserve. Ask the relevant council or road manager who is responsible and what work is allowed before planting, excavation, mulching or changing existing vegetation. Check for permit requirements, underground services, street-tree root protection, visibility, pedestrian clearance, access to bins and approved materials.

These requirements are local, not universal. Banyule Council’s 2025 guidelines apply to council-managed roads and exclude some road types; the City of Monash says a permit is required for some landscaping or excavation. Those examples do not establish the rules elsewhere. Consult the authority responsible for your particular street. How can I control weeds without harming bees?
Remove weeds selectively and prevent seed set
Where local rules allow, remove unwanted weeds in a way suited to the species and soil, and prevent survivors from setting seed. Avoid blanket clearing or unnecessary digging: some pollinators nest in undisturbed ground, and extensive soil disturbance can damage nesting places. If you do not know whether a plant is invasive or valuable forage, identify it before removing it.

Use suitable plants to occupy open ground
Choose plants suited to the region and the strip’s conditions, subject to council requirements. Flowering ground covers or other low-growing plants can fill space that weeds might otherwise occupy. Knox City Council describes indigenous or native wildflowers, ground covers, native grasses and low-growing shrubs as options in its jurisdiction and says they can compete with weeds. Pollinator-friendly management involves more than choosing flowers. When is pesticide treatment justified?
Consider pesticide only after identifying the target and deciding that lower-impact measures are not enough. Confirm the product is legally permitted for the intended site and target in your location. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises users to read the full label and look for hazard or advisory language. The label is the controlling, product-specific source for directions and restrictions; U.S. EPA guidance is not a substitute for pesticide law or label requirements in Australia or elsewhere. - Treat only the area that needs treatment, not the whole strip by default.
- Follow label directions for the target, site, application method, timing and protective measures.
- Minimize drift and keep pesticide and rinse water out of drains and waterways.
- Check for product-specific pollinator restrictions. EPA lists possible measures such as not applying during bloom, time-of-day limits, buffers and drift-reduction measures; these are examples, not universal directions that override a label. EPA advises household users to apply outdoor insecticides at night when bees are not actively foraging, but that timing does not make every product or use safe. Systemic pesticides can move into plant tissues and may be present in flowers, nectar and pollen after application, so applying in the evening alone may not remove exposure risk. Do not assume that a product is harmless because it is described as organic, natural or bee-friendly. Assess the actual product, target, exposure route and label restrictions, and use the least harmful effective approach.
