Delisting or removal from a subscription catalog and retirement of a publisher’s servers are separate events. If those servers are later switched off, server-dependent modes can stop working; offline modes may remain, but only the notice for that specific game and platform can confirm what survives.
Delisting and server shutdown are different
A delisting notice tells you that a game is no longer available for purchase, or that it has left a subscription catalog. It does not, by itself, say that existing copies have stopped working or that online services have ended. EA’s service-update page lists catalog removals separately from online-service shutdowns, so check the notice for the event it actually describes: EA Service Updates.

When a publisher retires a game’s online services, the affected features are the ones that rely on those services. Depending on the title, that can include online multiplayer, online leagues, shared community content, or modes with server-dependent progression. Do not assume every mode will disappear—or that any particular mode will remain—without a title-specific statement.
What may remain playable
Some games retain offline modes after their servers close. EA says this can happen, but notes that the result depends on the game and the particular services being retired. Its general policy also says virtual currency or in-game items may sometimes remain usable; that is not a guarantee for every game. See EA’s service-retirement policy.

Recent notices show how different the outcomes can be:
| Game and notice | Online-service change | What the publisher says remains |
|---|---|---|
| Madden NFL 20, EA notice | Online services, support, and in-game purchasing retired April 15, 2024. | Offline modes remained playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Madden Points could no longer be purchased from January 15, 2024, and unused balances could not be used after April 15, 2024. EA’s Madden NFL 20 notice. |
| NHL 14–18, EA notice dated June 6, 2022 | Servers for NHL 14, NHL 15, NHL 16, NHL 17, and NHL 18 retired that day. | All offline modes remained playable on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. EA’s NHL notice. |
| NBA 2K25, 2K notice updated October 2, 2026 | No longer available to purchase from October 30, 2026; discontinuation scheduled for December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, multiplayer and online modes, including MyCAREER and MyTEAM, are scheduled to be unavailable, and players will no longer be able to earn Virtual Currency. | 2K says existing owners will still be able to redownload and play offline. It names Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA as playable; multiplayer, Online Leagues, community sharing, and other server-dependent features will be unavailable. These dates are scheduled, not completed, as of October 5, 2026. Check 2K’s NBA 2K25 server-sunset notice for updates. |
How to check a particular game
- Find the publisher’s service notice for the exact title. Confirm whether it concerns a sale or subscription removal, a planned server retirement, or a shutdown that has already happened.
- Check the platform and edition. Look for the relevant console generation, PC version or storefront, and any platform-specific date or limitation.
- Look for an explicit list of surviving modes. A mode being available in the game menu does not establish that it will work offline. Rely on the publisher’s statement about what remains playable.
- Verify redownload and ownership terms separately. If you own the game, check whether the publisher says you can redownload it. Do not assume a store removal guarantees future account access or downloads.
- Check currency, items, and progression separately. Find out whether earning or buying currency ends, whether existing balances remain usable, and whether online-only progression or content becomes inaccessible.
What publishers’ timelines and policies do—and don’t—tell you
EA says it typically considers retiring online services when the player count falls below 1% of peak online players across all EA titles. That is EA’s general explanation, not a confirmed trigger for every individual shutdown. It also does not establish a standard number of years that a sports game’s servers will remain online. EA’s policy and service notices describe EA games; they do not set rules for other publishers.
