On Windows, close Dark Souls II completely, copy the Scholar of the First Sin save file %APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>DS2SOFS0000.sl2 to dated offline storage, and keep an untouched baseline. Test that copy by restoring it before you install a mod. Test mods offline, remove every mod component before reconnecting to online services, and understand that no official source promises a ban-proof workflow.
What you are protecting and what the backup can—and cannot—do
Dark Souls II stores character and progression data in a save container. A copied .sl2 file gives you a rollback point if a mod corrupts a character, an experiment produces an unwanted result, or you simply need to return to a known state. It does not make modified program files safe for online play, and it does not guarantee that an account will avoid an enforcement action.

The safest practical arrangement is a clean save kept separately from the computer, plus several dated copies made before individual experiments. Keep the original baseline read-only or in storage you will not accidentally overwrite. Use a second copy for testing and preserve the baseline even if a later copy appears to work.

Steam Support advises: “To avoid problems in the future, make sure to test any backups that you create.” A file that exists but has never been restored is not a dependable recovery plan.

Edition and platform limits you must identify first
The path below is for Scholar of the First Sin on Windows. Scholar released on Steam on April 1, 2015. The original Windows release and Scholar are different save environments, so identify the edition before copying or restoring anything.
- Windows Scholar: use the Scholar path and filename shown in the next section.
- Original Dark Souls II: do not assume the Scholar filename or folder applies. Use the save location documented for your exact installation and keep the backup labeled as original, not Scholar.
- Console: the Windows procedure does not apply to PlayStation or Xbox storage. A Windows
.sl2file is not a console backup method.
FromSoftware’s FAQ says an original Dark Souls II save can continue in Scholar, but a save after downloadable content has been applied cannot be loaded by the non-DLC game. The same FAQ distinguishes the server families: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows DirectX 9 saves cannot be used on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Windows DirectX 11. Treat edition, DLC state, platform, and server family as part of the backup’s identity.
Find and copy a Scholar save on Windows
1. Exit the game and stop the game process
- Save normally and choose the game’s exit option.
- Wait for Dark Souls II to close. In Task Manager, confirm that no Dark Souls II game process remains before copying the file. Copying while the game is still writing can leave you with an incomplete or inconsistent backup.
- Do not begin a mod installation until the copy is complete and stored separately.
2. Open the AppData location
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%APPDATA%and press Enter. - Open the
DarkSoulsIIfolder, then open the folder named for your account ID. - For Scholar of the First Sin, locate
DS2SOFS0000.sl2.
The complete published location is %APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>DS2SOFS0000.sl2. The account-ID folder is unique to the installation or account context; do not substitute a different user’s folder.
3. Make the first, untouched copy
- Create a folder on offline storage such as a removable USB flash drive. Use a clear name that records the date, edition, and state, for example
2026-10-19_Scholar_clean_pre-mod. - Copy
DS2SOFS0000.sl2into that folder. Use copy and paste rather than cut and paste so the active save remains in place. - Keep the original copied file unchanged. Do not rename the file itself if you intend to restore it directly; put descriptive information in the containing folder name or a text note.
- Make at least one additional dated copy before each separate mod experiment. A baseline plus experiment copies lets you return to the last known-good point without sacrificing the clean starting state.
Design a backup set that is easy to trust
A useful backup set distinguishes a clean baseline, a verified recovery copy, and experimental states. Label every folder so you can identify the exact edition and DLC condition without opening the game.

| Copy | Purpose | Example label | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Untouched baseline | Return to the pre-mod character state | 2026-10-19_Scholar_clean_pre-mod |

Make a new copy for each experiment |
| Post-test state | Document what a mod changed | 2026-10-20_Scholar_mod-A-offline |
Do not treat it as a clean online-ready copy |
Offline storage provides a separately held copy. A Steam installation backup is not automatically a backup of every third-party save file, according to Steam Support. Therefore, include the save file explicitly in your own backup routine instead of assuming an installation archive contains it.
Keep the backup set in a location that is not affected by the same experiment—for example, a removable drive disconnected after copying. If you use more than one storage device, keep one copy untouched while testing the other. The objective is recoverability, not a large number of indistinguishable duplicates.
Verify the backup before installing a mod
Verification catches wrong paths, wrong editions, and unreadable files before they matter. Perform the test with the game offline and with no mod components installed.
- Close the game and ensure its process has ended.
- Copy the current active
DS2SOFS0000.sl2to a temporary folder so you can put it back after the test. - Copy your proposed baseline file from offline storage into the active Scholar save folder, replacing the active file only after the game is closed.
- Launch the game without connecting to online services. Confirm that the expected character, inventory, progression, and world state appear.
- Exit again, restore the temporary active file if you need to preserve the previous state, and record that the baseline was successfully test-restored.
If the expected character does not appear, stop. Check that you used the correct account-ID folder, that the file is for Scholar rather than the original game, and that the DLC state matches the game you launched. Do not overwrite the untouched baseline while troubleshooting.

Restore a known-good save after a failed experiment
- Exit Dark Souls II and confirm that its game process is no longer running.
- Keep a copy of the current active file if you may need to analyze the failed experiment.
- Copy the known-good
DS2SOFS0000.sl2from your dated backup into%APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>. - Allow Windows to replace the active file. Do not rename the restored file away from
DS2SOFS0000.sl2. - Launch while still offline and verify the expected character state before doing anything else.
Restoring the save reverses save-data changes only. It does not remove altered executables, DLLs, loaders, texture packages, or other assets. Those files must be returned to an unmodified state separately.
Use an offline workflow for mod testing
Prepare
- Start from a verified, clean save copy and record the date and edition.
- Read the individual mod author’s installation and online-use instructions, including comments or updates. Community guidance is specific to each mod and is not an official safety guarantee.
- Make another dated save copy immediately before installing or enabling the mod.
- Keep the test environment offline while the mod is active. Do not use co-op, versus play, messages, or bloodstains during testing; FromSoftware classifies these features as online multiplayer functions.
During the test
- Change one mod or configuration at a time when possible, so a failure can be associated with a dated backup.
- Record the mod files you added, their locations, and any launch options or loaders you changed.
- Do not overwrite the clean baseline with a save created under a modded environment.
Finish and clean up
- Exit the game completely.
- Remove every mod component according to the author’s instructions, including loaders and altered assets—not just the visible mod folder.
- Restore unmodified game files using the appropriate clean-file procedure for your installation.
- If the experiment changed progression, restore the known-good
.sl2copy while the game is still offline. - Launch once offline and confirm that the expected clean character and files are present.
What “going back online safely” really means
There is no official source that promises a ban-proof mod workflow for Dark Souls II. Community guides advise removing mod files before returning online, but that advice is not a guarantee from FromSoftware or Steam. A clean save alone is insufficient if modified executable or asset files remain.
Use this decision gate before reconnecting:
| Check | Required condition | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Save state | The active save is a known-good copy made for the exact edition, DLC state, platform, and account folder | Close the game and restore the matching backup |
| Mod files | All mod files, loaders, injected components, and altered assets have been removed | Stay offline and complete removal |
| Game files | The installation is back to its unmodified state | Use the installation’s file-repair or reinstall process before connecting |
| Verification | A clean offline launch shows the expected character and no mod behavior | Do not connect; investigate and restore again |
| Risk acceptance | You understand that these checks reduce exposure but cannot guarantee no enforcement | Remain offline if the account consequence is unacceptable |
Only after every check passes should you consider reconnecting. Even then, do not describe the result as “safe” in the absolute sense: the available evidence establishes precautions, not immunity from detection or bans.
A specific anti-cheat warning: Durazno
PCGamingWiki records a concrete warning that using Durazno to reduce controller deadzone can trigger anti-cheat and permanently ban an account from online matchmaking. This is a reported risk tied to that tool, not proof that every Dark Souls II mod produces the same result.

The practical implication is straightforward: never assume a mod is harmless because it changes only input, graphics, or convenience features. Check the author’s online-use guidance, keep unverified tools offline, and remove them before any online session. No published topic-specific statistic establishes how often Dark Souls II mod users are banned, so do not rely on an invented percentage or a claim that a particular category is universally tolerated.
Steam backups versus a dedicated save backup
| Method | What it gives you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
Manual copy of .sl2 |
A separately held, dated save you can restore directly | You must close the game first and verify the copy yourself |
| Steam installation backup | A backup of installation data covered by Steam’s process | Steam Support says third-party save files may need to be copied separately |
| Test-restored manual copy | Evidence that the file can be used to recover the expected character | It still does not restore modified executable or asset files |
Use the manual copy as the authoritative save backup. An installation backup can be useful for program files, but it should not replace an explicitly copied and tested save.

The folder is missing
Confirm that you are on Windows and using Scholar of the First Sin. Open Run with %APPDATA% rather than browsing to a similarly named folder under the Steam installation. Launch the game once, exit normally, and check again. If the folder still does not match the documented Scholar path, do not guess a replacement location or copy a file from another edition.
The game loads the wrong character
Check the account-ID folder and the edition label on the backup. A file from another account folder, the original game, or a different DLC state may be valid data but not the state you expected. Restore the untouched baseline and test it offline again.

The restored file appears corrupted
Stop launching repeatedly and preserve the suspect file for diagnosis. Copy the verified recovery file again while the game is closed. If the verified copy also fails, your earlier test was not conclusive; check that the file transfer completed and that you are restoring to the exact Scholar path.
The mod still appears after removing its main files
Assume that a loader, injected component, altered asset, or launch option remains. Follow the mod author’s complete removal instructions and repair the installation before reconnecting. Replacing the save file cannot undo changes outside the save container.
You need to move between editions or platforms
Do not treat a copied file as a universal transfer. Apply FromSoftware’s compatibility rules: original-to-Scholar continuation is described, but a post-DLC save cannot load in the non-DLC game, and the PS3/Xbox 360/Windows DX9 family is separate from PS4/Xbox One/Windows DX11. Keep separate archives labeled with platform, API generation, edition, and DLC state.

- Edition identified: Scholar or original.
- Platform and server family recorded.
- DLC state recorded.
- Game closed and no game process running.
- Clean baseline copied from the correct account-ID folder.
- Baseline stored on offline or removable storage and never overwritten.
- Backup restored once and expected character state confirmed offline.
- New dated copy made immediately before each experiment.
- Mod author’s online-use instructions and comments reviewed.
- Testing kept offline.
- All mod components removed before any online connection is considered.
- Clean save and clean program files verified separately.
Bottom line
For Windows Scholar, copy %APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>DS2SOFS0000.sl2 only after the game has closed, preserve an untouched dated baseline, and prove the backup works by restoring it offline. Test mods offline and remove every modified component before reconnecting. Those steps give you a controlled rollback and reduce avoidable exposure; they do not make online bans impossible.
