How to Back Up Android Photos to a Computer, Cloud Storage, or External Drive

Use Google Photos for automatic off-site backup, USB to copy photos stored on your Android phone, or Google Takeout to archive a cloud library on an external drive.

Choose the route that matches where your photos are now: use Google Photos for automatic off-device backup, USB File Transfer for a quick copy of files stored on your phone, or Google Takeout to export a cloud library before copying it to an external drive. USB does not retrieve cloud-only photos, so first identify whether the items you want are on the phone or only in Google Photos.

Choose a backup method

Method Best for Internet needed? Separate local copy? Storage limits or cost
Google Photos backup Routine, automatic off-device access to photos and videos Yes, for uploading No, unless you also download or export the files Google states that a no-cost account has 15 GB shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive; a Google One plan is the stated way to get more storage. Google One
USB File Transfer to a computer A quick copy of photos and videos stored on the phone No Yes, on the computer Uses available computer storage; no cloud storage allocation is involved
Google Takeout, then an external drive A bulk archive of a Google Photos library Yes, to prepare and download the export Yes, once the archive is saved to the drive Uses storage on the computer and drive; larger exports can be split into multiple archives

For routine protection and access across signed-in devices, use Google Photos. For a quick offline copy of files already on the phone, transfer them by USB. For an independent archive of a cloud library, export it with Takeout and store the downloaded archives on an external drive. If you want both off-site access and a local copy, combine a cloud backup with one of the local methods.

Back up photos to Google Photos

Google Photos can upload photos and videos automatically. Google says backed-up items can be accessed from devices signed in to the relevant account and are private unless shared. Backup can be active for only one Google Account at a time. Check the account selected in the app before enabling it. Google Photos backup help

  1. Open Google Photos on your Android phone and sign in to the Google Account you want to use.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Photos settings and Backup. Turn on backup and review the account and upload settings shown.
  3. Leave the app connected as needed while photos upload. Upload time depends on your connection and the amount of media.
  4. Before relying on the cloud copy, check the backup status in Google Photos. To check a particular photo or video, open it and look for its backup status in the item details or menu.

Google’s stated no-cost allocation is 15 GB, shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive; other files in those services use the same space. Google lists Google One as the paid option for additional storage. Original quality uploads count against storage limits and retain full resolution, including RAW photos and large 4K videos. Check Google’s current storage details before choosing a plan, because product allowances can change.

Copy photos stored on your phone to a computer

USB File Transfer copies files that are present in the phone’s storage. It does not export a full Google Photos cloud library, and cloud-only items must first be downloaded or exported. Google’s Android help documents this USB process for moving files to a computer. Transfer files between your computer and Android device

  1. Unlock the Android phone and connect it to the computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
  2. On the phone, tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
  3. Under USB preferences, choose File Transfer.
  4. On the computer, open the phone’s storage in the file-transfer window and copy the photo and video folders you want to keep. On a Chromebook, use the Files app.
  5. When finished on Windows, eject the phone from the computer before unplugging the cable.

If the phone only charges and no storage appears, the cable may not carry data. Try another data-capable cable, unlock the phone, and select File Transfer again. Google also documents Quick Share for Windows as another way to move files, but USB is a straightforward option when you want to copy folders directly.

Export a Google Photos library with Takeout

Google Takeout is the bulk-export route for data in a Google Account, including Google Photos. It creates downloadable archives, which can be saved on a computer and then copied to an external drive. Google says preparation may take from a few minutes to a few days; most people receive a download link the same day. A large export can be divided into multiple archive files. Download your Google data with Takeout

  1. Go to Google Takeout and sign in to the account containing the Photos library.
  2. Choose the Google Photos data to include. If you want only Photos, deselect other products.
  3. Choose the delivery method, archive format, and maximum archive size. A larger export may arrive as several archives.
  4. Create the export and wait for Google’s notification that it is ready. Preparation time varies with the size of the library.
  5. Download every archive to the computer, then copy the downloaded files to the external drive. Confirm that the files are present on the drive before removing the computer copy.

Takeout also supports a Google Photos-only scheduled export every two months for one year; the first archive is created immediately. That can help maintain periodic exports, but it does not replace checking that each archive has downloaded and is safely stored.

Copy a backup to an external drive

For photos on the phone, use USB File Transfer to copy them to a computer, connect the external drive to that computer, and copy the folder onto the drive. For a cloud library, download the Takeout archives to the computer first, then copy them to the drive. This computer-bridge approach is the documented workflow here; the Android transfer instructions do not establish a direct phone-to-external-drive procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that the computer and drive have enough free space for the copy.
  • Confirm the drive connection is compatible with the computer before starting.
  • Open a few copied files from the drive to verify that the transfer produced usable files.
  • Keep the originals until you have verified the destination copy and, for cloud backup, confirmed the backup status.

A portable external hard drive is one model-neutral option when you want a separate local copy beyond the computer. A separate drive copy is useful for keeping an archive under your control, while Google Photos offers off-site access; they serve different purposes.

Verify the copy before deleting anything

Do not delete phone or cloud originals just because an upload or transfer appears to have started. For Google Photos, confirm backup is complete and inspect the status of important items. For a computer or drive copy, check the destination folders and open representative files. Google Photos backup and sync behavior can affect views across signed-in devices, so understand which account and copy a deletion applies to before removing an item.
