Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are unsupported, and Windows 10’s standard support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC can still run after support ends, but Microsoft no longer provides routine security updates for that unsupported release. Check whether your computer can run a supported Windows 11 installation; if it cannot, consider a replacement. Eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs may have a temporary Consumer Extended Security Updates option, but it is not an upgrade path for Windows 8.
When did support end for Windows 8, 8.1, and 10?
| Windows version | End of support | What that means now |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 8 | January 12, 2016 | Unsupported; Microsoft’s general Windows guidance says unsupported versions do not receive software updates or technical support. |
| Windows 8.1 | January 10, 2023 | Unsupported on the same basis as Windows 8. |
| Windows 10 | October 14, 2025 | Standard support has ended. Eligible personal-use version 22H2 PCs may be able to enroll in Consumer ESU for limited security updates. |
| Windows 11 | Depends on the installed version and edition | Check Microsoft’s lifecycle information for the specific Windows 11 version and edition; they do not all share one support end date. |
The dates above are from Microsoft support and lifecycle information. End of support does not make a computer stop working: it means the user should not expect Microsoft to continue routine security servicing or technical support for that release.

Is Windows 8 still safe to use?
Windows 8 and 8.1 still run, but an unsupported operating system no longer receives Microsoft security fixes. That leaves newly discovered vulnerabilities without routine OS updates, increasing exposure over time. Antivirus software can help with some threats, but it does not replace operating-system security updates or restore Microsoft support.
For a computer used to access email, financial accounts, work systems, or sensitive files, moving to a supported operating system or a supported replacement PC is the practical security choice. If you must keep an unsupported PC temporarily, avoid treating it as a secure everyday device for sensitive activity.

Can a Windows 8 PC upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 for free?
Microsoft’s current support guidance says there are no free upgrade paths from unsupported Windows versions to Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not assume a Windows 8 license or an old upgrade offer makes a present-day upgrade free.
The free Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade is a separate case: it applies to eligible Windows 10 PCs and requires compatible hardware. Microsoft says upgrades through Windows Update require Windows 10 version 2004 or later. A Windows 8 PC cannot use that Windows Update route as-is.

Can your old PC run Windows 11?
Eligibility depends on the computer’s actual components and firmware, not just its age or brand. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include all of the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores, that appears on Microsoft’s approved processor list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches diagonally with HD 720p resolution.
Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Meeting the processor’s speed and core-count figures alone is not enough; its appearance on Microsoft’s approved list matters.

Check eligibility before choosing an installation
- Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool, or check the eligibility assessment in Windows Update if it is available on the PC.
- Consult the computer maker’s guidance for the exact model, especially for firmware settings, drivers, and supported upgrade options.
- Check software and peripheral makers for compatibility if you rely on older applications, printers, scanners, or specialist input devices.
A passed compatibility check addresses Windows 11’s requirements; it does not establish that every application or peripheral you use will work correctly after a change.

Keep Windows 10 temporarily with Consumer ESU, if eligible
Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) is a limited program for eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs. It provides critical and important security updates, not feature updates or ordinary technical support. It is not a way to bring a Windows 8 computer onto Windows 10 or to continue receiving full Windows 10 support.

Microsoft’s US Consumer ESU page currently lists coverage through October 12, 2027. It lists enrollment by syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or making a one-time $30 USD purchase plus applicable tax. Regional eligibility, enrollment methods, costs, and timing can differ; check the current offer in Settings for your location rather than relying on the US terms.

If the PC meets Windows 11 requirements, installation may be an option, but plan it as a migration rather than assuming a simple in-place update from Windows 8. Microsoft warns that installation may overwrite the existing drive. Back up your files first, and be prepared to reinstall applications and transfer data and settings. Follow Microsoft’s current installation directions for your device and confirm the manufacturer’s guidance before proceeding.
Replace a PC that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements
If the computer fails the requirements and there is no suitable manufacturer-supported route, a supported Windows 11 PC is the replacement option. Choose based on your workload, processor and memory needs, storage, display and accessibility requirements, budget, expected support life, and compatibility with essential peripherals. No particular model is established as a best choice here.
Quick Recap
How to prepare for a move
- Inventory what you depend on. Record important files, installed apps, account access, printers and other peripherals, and any accessibility tools you use.
- Verify compatibility. Check the PC against Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and confirm support with software and device manufacturers.
- Make a separate backup. Copy important files to a backup drive or use cloud backup; do this before an installation that could overwrite the drive.
- Plan the application migration. Identify installation media, account credentials, license details, and files or settings that must be transferred. Do not assume installed Windows 8 applications will carry over.
- Choose the supported destination. Proceed with Windows 11 only if the hardware and your essential software and peripherals are suitable; otherwise, plan a replacement rather than relying indefinitely on an unsupported OS.
