Let Steam Cloud finish syncing when the demo supports it, then make a separate copy of the demo’s real save folder. On the destination PC or Steam Deck, install the same demo or the full game, run it once, quit, and copy the backup into the matching location. If Steam shows a Cloud conflict, preserve the manual backup and compare file dates before choosing a version. A demo save continues in the full game only when its developer made the save format and storage compatible, or configured shared Steamworks Cloud storage between the two app IDs.
What you need before moving a demo save
A successful transfer depends on three separate things: the demo must have created a local save, Steam Cloud must have uploaded any files it supports, and the destination game must know how to read those files. Steam Cloud is optional and configured per game; it is not a universal backup service. Valve says Cloud can store settings, save games, profile statistics and other user data, but only for files the game has configured for synchronization. Many games do not use it.

- The original computer must still contain the desired progress, or you must have a known-good backup.

- The destination needs the same demo, the full game, or an officially supported import path.
- Keep enough free space for the copied folder and a second untouched copy while testing.
Do not uninstall the demo or delete its files until the destination has loaded the intended save and you have exited normally.

1. Let Steam Cloud finish
- Open the demo’s Steam library page, select Properties, and check the Cloud setting. The exact label can vary with Steam’s current interface.
- Launch the demo and save through its normal in-game menu. If it has more than one slot, make a note of the slot containing the progress you want.
- Exit through the game’s menu rather than forcing the process closed. Wait for Steam to show that synchronization has completed before shutting down or disconnecting the computer.
Cloud synchronization is game-specific. A Cloud icon or a completed status means Steam handled the files the developer registered; it does not prove that every local save file was included.

2. Find the actual save folder
Steam’s local Cloud cache normally sits in the following locations:

Inside userdata, account folders and numeric app-ID folders identify Cloud data. These directories are useful evidence, not a guarantee of the game’s own save location. Developers commonly place saves in Documents, %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%, Saved Games, a publisher-specific directory, or (on Linux and Steam Deck) a Proton prefix such as compatdata/<appID>/pfx/. The game’s support documentation is the authority for its exact path.
To identify the right folder, change a save in the demo, exit, and sort likely directories by modification time. Look for files whose timestamps changed at the moment you saved. Do not edit or rename them while you are identifying them.

- Close the game and wait until Steam is no longer writing or synchronizing it.
- Copy the entire save folder, including subfolders and files. Preserve filenames, extensions and folder structure.
- Paste it into a dated folder on a USB flash drive, portable SSD, another internal disk, or another backup location. For example, use a folder name that records the game, operating system and date.
- Open the copied folder and confirm that files are present. If possible, keep a second copy in a different location.
Steam’s Backup Feature can create installation backup files, but Valve notes that third-party save locations vary. A restored installation may therefore require you to copy the save files back manually. An installation backup is not a substitute for a direct copy of the save folder.

4. Record details beside the backup
Create a plain-text note next to the copy containing the demo’s exact name, Steam app ID if known, operating system, original save path and backup date. Also note whether the copy came from a demo or full game. A demo and its full release normally have different app IDs, and this record prevents you from placing files in a similarly named but unrelated directory.
Move the save to another PC
Prepare the destination
- Install the same demo, or install the full game if you are testing an official demo-to-full import.
- Run it once and create a temporary save. This lets the game create its expected folders and confirms that it starts correctly on the new system.
- Quit normally. Do not overwrite files while the game is running.
If Steam immediately downloads an unwanted blank or older save, temporarily disable Cloud for that game before replacing local files. Re-enable it only after the desired local files are in place and verified. Some publishers provide different instructions, so follow a game-specific support article when one exists.
Copy the backup into the matching path
- Navigate to the destination path that the game uses, not automatically to the Steam installation directory.
- Rename the newly generated destination save folder as a precaution, or copy it elsewhere, so you can restore it if necessary.
- Paste the backed-up folder and files without changing their names or hierarchy. If the destination uses a different account or app-ID directory, do not guess at a rename; confirm the game’s documented structure first.
- Start the game and check the expected save slot, chapter, character or other progress marker.
- Quit normally after verification so Steam can synchronize the files you intend to keep.
Keep the untouched manual backup until you have launched the transferred save more than once and confirmed that new progress persists after a restart.
Move the save to a Steam Deck or Linux system
Cross-platform transfer is conditional. Steamworks supports platform-specific path overrides and cross-platform synchronization only when the developer configures them. A game may synchronize between Windows and SteamOS, between some desktop platforms, or not at all.

On a Steam Deck, a Windows demo running through Proton may store its files inside that game’s per-app compatibility prefix. The relevant tree can be under compatdata/<appID>/pfx/, with the Windows-style locations such as drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents or AppData beneath it. Native Linux builds can use the Linux home-directory paths instead. Check which build the game is running and locate the files created by a test save before copying anything.
When transferring from Windows to SteamOS, differences in path separators, case sensitivity, permissions and save serialization can matter. Use the game’s documented cross-platform instructions where available. If the developer did not configure cross-platform Cloud or a portable format, a copied file may be unreadable even though it has the expected name.
Can a demo save continue in the full game?
Sometimes, but Steam does not make this automatic. The demo and full game normally use different Steam app IDs. The full release can recognize the demo progress only when the developer has provided a compatible save format and location, an in-game import prompt, or Steamworks Shared Cloud Storage between the two app IDs.
Valve describes Shared Cloud Storage as commonly used to share saved games between a demo and a full game. When it is configured, the full game can retrieve the shared data through Steam’s supported Cloud mechanism. The presence of a demo and full release from the same developer is not, by itself, evidence that this relationship exists.

If the full game offers an import option
- Install the full game and launch it once.
- Use its documented Import demo save, Continue from demo or equivalent menu command.
- Choose the slot or profile when prompted, then make a new full-game save.
- Exit normally and allow the full game to synchronize.
An import prompt is preferable to manually changing filenames because the game can perform any required conversion itself.
If there is no official import
Make a second copy of the demo backup before experimenting. Some games require a folder rename, a filename change or a format conversion; those details cannot be inferred from Steam’s general documentation. Obtain the exact procedure from the game’s developer or support page. Never overwrite the only copy of the demo save while testing an unofficial method.
Resolve Steam Cloud conflicts without losing progress
A Cloud conflict means Steam detected changed files in more than one place. The local copy and the Cloud copy may represent different sessions, and the newest timestamp is not always the session you want.
- Cancel or postpone the choice if Steam allows it.
- Copy the local save folder to a new dated backup before selecting either option.
- Compare the local file modification times with the Cloud version’s times shown by Steam. Use the save’s in-game progress as the deciding evidence when timestamps are ambiguous.
- Choose the version that contains the desired progress. Selecting the wrong side can replace the other copy.
- Launch the game, verify the slot, and exit normally. Keep the manual backup until the result is confirmed.
Steam warns that Cloud data may not be recoverable. Cloud should therefore be treated as synchronization, not as an unlimited version history.

For a single demo, the safest practical combination is Steam Cloud plus a manual copy of the real save folder. For several games, removable storage provides a convenient place to preserve dated folders, but it should not be the only copy.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
The destination starts from the beginning
- Confirm that the backup contains files from the correct demo and account.
- Check whether the destination game uses a different save path, app ID or Proton prefix.
- Run the destination once, quit, and compare the newly created folder with the backup before replacing it.
- Verify that the full game officially supports demo imports. If it does not, a copied file may be incompatible even when placed correctly.
Steam Cloud shows no progress
- Confirm Cloud is enabled for the game and that the original demo exited normally.
- Check the developer’s save-path documentation; the files may never have been registered for Cloud.
- Use the manual copy from the original machine. Steam cannot restore a file it never synchronized.
The game says the save is corrupted
- Stop launching and rewriting the file repeatedly.
- Restore the untouched backup and confirm that it opens on the original platform.
- Check for platform or game-version differences and follow the developer’s conversion instructions.
- Do not edit binary save files or change extensions unless the developer documents that procedure.
The copied folder is empty or has the wrong files
- Make a new test save, exit, and sort candidate directories by modification time.
- Look outside the Steam installation directory, including Documents, AppData, Saved Games and Proton’s prefix.
- Check whether the game stores profiles in a separate account or publisher folder.
Steam keeps restoring the wrong version
- Temporarily disable Cloud before placing the desired local files.
- Preserve both local and Cloud versions rather than repeatedly accepting a prompt.
- After verifying the correct save, re-enable Cloud and allow a normal exit to upload it.

- Save in the demo and exit through its menu.
- Wait for Steam Cloud synchronization, if supported.
- Locate the real save folder and copy it without changing its structure.
- Store a dated copy on removable or other separate storage.
- Record the game name, app ID, operating system, path and date.
- Install the destination game and run it once before copying.
- Disable Cloud temporarily if it is about to overwrite the desired local files.
- Paste into the destination’s documented path while the game is closed.
- Verify the save in-game, exit normally and then allow synchronization.
- Keep the original backup until new progress survives a restart.
