How to Back Up and Transfer Nintendo Switch Save Data Before a Repair

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Back up your Nintendo Switch before repair by using Save Data Cloud for every supported game, then use the console-to-console transfer for each game that cannot use the cloud. Cloud backup requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and leaves the original save on the console. The local transfer does not: Nintendo moves the save and deletes it from the source, so you must launch the game and verify the save on the destination console before shipping the original.

A microSD card, USB drive, or game card is not a documented way to copy Switch save data. If the console still boots, keep it powered and connected until every backup, transfer, and verification is finished.

Choose the right protection method first

Your plan depends on whether each game supports Save Data Cloud and whether you have another working Switch available. A single console can contain games with different rules, so check every important title rather than assuming one method covers all of them.

Method Nintendo Switch Online Works for games without cloud support What happens to the source save? Second console required?
Save Data Cloud Required No The cloud copy is retained and the source save remains on the console. No; you can download later.
Nearby “Transfer Your Save Data” Not required Yes The save is deleted from the source after it is sent. Yes, with both consoles nearby and online.
Full system transfer Depends on the account and service situation Rules vary; non-cloud saves may be deleted from the original. Depends on the game, account, and whether the destination is a Switch 2. Yes.

Use cloud backup when it is available

This is the least disruptive option before a repair. Nintendo Switch Online is required, and the saved data can later be downloaded to another system while the membership remains active. Because the original save stays on the console, cloud backup is also the only method in this guide that creates a recoverable copy without immediately requiring a second Switch.

Use a nearby transfer for games excluded from the cloud

For a game that does not support Save Data Cloud, Nintendo’s documented method is an individual transfer to another working Switch. The two consoles must be close to one another, connected to the internet, and using the same Nintendo Account for the relevant user. Membership is not required, but the operation is a move rather than a backup.

Use a full transfer for a replacement console

If the repair will result in a replacement system or you are moving everything to a new console, Nintendo provides a full user/system transfer. It moves the user and associated data together. The original console loses the account, user, and save data after completion, subject to the separate rules for cloud-backed saves and Switch 2 transfers described below.

Prepare the Switch while it still works

Do these checks before starting any transfer. They reduce the chance of discovering an account or connectivity problem after the console has been handed to a repair center.

  • Install the latest system update while the console still boots.
  • Connect the console to a reliable internet connection and keep it on power.
  • Open the user list and identify every user whose saves matter.
  • Sign in and confirm that the correct Nintendo Account is linked to each relevant user. An unlinked user changes what can be transferred, especially when moving to Switch 2.
  • Make a list of the games that need protection. Physical and digital games can have different cloud-support status, so check titles individually.
  • Do not initialize, reset, or send the console away until all selected games have either completed a cloud backup or been verified on another console.

Back up supported games with Save Data Cloud

Nintendo’s January 2, 2025 transfer guidance says Nintendo Switch Online members can back up supported games and later download the data to another system. The backup is tied to the relevant user and Nintendo Account, not to a removable card.

Back up one game

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Open Save Data Cloud.
  4. Select the user whose save you want to protect.
  5. Choose the game and start its backup. Repeat for every supported game and every user that needs protection.

Leave the console connected until each selected backup has completed. A game appearing in the cloud menu is not a reason to skip the actual backup; complete a fresh backup immediately before repair.

What cloud backup does and does not cover

  • It requires Nintendo Switch Online. Without the membership, this service cannot be used.
  • It covers supported games only. A title that does not offer Save Data Cloud needs a nearby transfer if its save must be preserved.
  • It preserves the source save. Unlike a local transfer, backing up does not delete the save from the original console.
  • It can be downloaded later. On another system, use the same Nintendo Account and the Save Data Cloud controls to retrieve the backed-up data while the membership remains active.

Cloud backup is not a universal image of the console. It protects the saved data that Nintendo makes eligible for the service; it does not turn an unsupported game into a cloud-supported one and does not replace the need to protect those games locally.

Transfer non-cloud saves to another Switch

For games without Save Data Cloud, use Nintendo’s Transfer Your Save Data feature while the original console is operational. This method does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it requires a second working Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements

  • Both consoles must be connected to the internet.
  • Keep the consoles near each other during the operation.
  • The same Nintendo Account must be linked to the relevant user on the source and destination systems.
  • Keep both systems powered until the transfer and verification are complete.

Start the transfer

  1. On the source Switch, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
  2. Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
  3. On the destination Switch, open the same settings path.
  4. Choose Receive Save Data.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to select the relevant user and game, then wait for the send and receive process to finish.

Perform this separately for every game that lacks cloud support. Do not treat a completed menu operation as proof that the save is usable; the destination must be tested.

Understand the deletion warning

Nintendo explicitly warns: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” If the transfer is interrupted or the destination is not the console you intended to use, there is no source duplicate to fall back on. The practical consequence is important: do not ship, reset, or surrender the original until the receiving console has been checked.

Verify the destination before repair

  1. Open the transferred game on the destination Switch.
  2. Choose the user associated with the transferred save.
  3. Load the save and check that the expected progress, profile, or world is present.
  4. Close the game normally and keep the destination console available as your working copy.

If the game does not show the expected data, stop. Do not erase the destination or the source, and do not send the original for repair until you have resolved the account, user, game-selection, or transfer problem.

Use a full system transfer when replacing the console

A full transfer is designed for moving to another system rather than protecting only selected games. Nintendo says it moves the user and associated data; after it finishes, the account, user, and save data are removed from the original console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When this option fits

  • You have a replacement Switch and want to move the user profile and associated content together.
  • You are changing systems permanently rather than sending the same console for a temporary repair.
  • You want Nintendo’s system-level transfer flow instead of handling games one at a time.

Important consequences

A full transfer is not a “copy and keep both systems” operation. Plan for the original to lose the transferred account, user, and saves when Nintendo’s process completes. Cloud-backed saves can be downloaded on the second console while the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active, but that does not change the deletion of transferred data from the original.

For a repair in which you expect to get the same console back, a full transfer may be more extensive than necessary. Use cloud backup and individual local transfers for the games you actually need to protect unless the repair provider or Nintendo has instructed you to replace the system.

What changes when the destination is a Switch 2?

Nintendo describes a specific distinction for a local system transfer to Switch 2:

  • For linked users, cloud-supported saves remain on the Switch and are copied to Switch 2 during the local system transfer.
  • Saves for games without cloud support are deleted from the source during that transfer.
  • Saves belonging to users without linked Nintendo Accounts are also deleted from the source.

Therefore, link the correct Nintendo Account before transferring and separately protect every non-cloud game. Do not assume that a Switch 2 transfer preserves an unlinked profile or creates a second copy of a non-cloud save.

Why an SD card, USB drive, or game card is not a save backup

Nintendo’s documented repair-safe procedures use Save Data Cloud or console-to-console transfer. They do not instruct you to copy Switch save files to a microSD card, USB drive, or the game card. Game installation data and screenshots may be stored or moved differently, but those items are not a transferable save backup.

Removing the microSD card before repair can be sensible for protecting downloaded software or personal files, but it does not preserve the save data through the documented methods. Keep the focus on the user and game records in System Settings, and verify the destination console rather than relying on removable media.

Repair-day checklist

  1. Update: Install the latest system update while the Switch still boots.
  2. Accounts: Confirm the correct Nintendo Account is linked to every user whose saves matter.
  3. Cloud scan: For each game, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud and determine whether the title is supported.
  4. Cloud backup: Complete a fresh backup for every supported game under the correct user. Nintendo Switch Online is required.
  5. Local protection: For every game without cloud support, use Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console on the source and Receive Save Data on the destination.
  6. Destination test: Launch each transferred game and load the expected save before handing over the original.
  7. Power and network: Keep the original connected and powered until all operations and checks are finished.
  8. Only then ship: Do not reset, initialize, or disconnect the original early.

Troubleshoot the situations that cause the most loss

The console will not boot

The documented procedures require the original system to be usable for the menu operations. If a game had a completed cloud backup, you can later download that backup on another system with the same Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If a non-cloud game was never transferred and the console cannot boot, the supplied Nintendo procedures provide no removable-media recovery method; do not assume a microSD card contains a usable save copy.

The wrong user or account appears

Stop before sending data. Verify the user selected in Save Data Cloud or Transfer Your Save Data, then confirm that the same Nintendo Account is linked on the destination. A transfer performed for the wrong user does not protect the save you intended to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game is missing from Save Data Cloud

Treat that absence as a signal to use the nearby transfer method, not as a temporary display problem. Nintendo Switch Online cannot back up a title that does not support the service.

The transfer was interrupted

Keep both consoles powered and connected, reopen the relevant transfer controls, and inspect the destination by launching the game. Because the local operation deletes the source save after sending, do not assume that restarting creates a second copy or that the original remains intact.

The repair center asks for the original console only

Complete the appropriate backup or transfer before handing it over. Cloud-backed games need a completed cloud operation; non-cloud games need a verified destination Switch. If you cannot complete either operation while the console works, ask the repair provider what data-preservation options they formally support rather than relying on an SD card or game cartridge.

After the repair or on the replacement system

For a cloud-backed game, sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the backup, open the Save Data Cloud controls, select the user and game, and download the saved data. Keep the Nintendo Switch Online membership active while using this service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game protected by nearby transfer, use the destination console on which you already verified the save. The source file was deleted as part of sending, so the destination is the preserved working copy. If you performed a full system transfer, use the transferred user and the cloud-download path for eligible games, following the transfer results shown on the new system.

The safest decision in one minute

  • Supported by Save Data Cloud and you have Nintendo Switch Online: back it up from Save Data Cloud; the source remains available.
  • Not supported by cloud and you have another Switch: transfer the save nearby, then launch and verify it; the source is deleted after sending.
  • Moving permanently to a replacement: consider the full system transfer, knowing the original loses the transferred user and data.
  • Moving to Switch 2: link the correct accounts and separately protect non-cloud and unlinked-user saves because those are deleted from the source.
  • No working source console and no prior cloud backup: Nintendo’s documented methods do not provide an SD-card or USB recovery route.
