To keep your WhatsApp conversations when you change phones or reinstall the app, create a current backup—or use WhatsApp’s supported phone-to-phone transfer while your old phone is available. iPhone backups use iCloud; Android backups use a Google Account. Restoring requires the same WhatsApp phone number and the cloud account used to create the backup, and the restore prompt appears during setup.
Choose the right way to move your chats

An exported chat is not a substitute: export creates a text file, not a backup that can be imported into WhatsApp.

Before you back up or restore
- Check the snapshot: On the phone with your chats, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Check the displayed time and size. If the phone still works, make a fresh backup before switching.
- Use the matching identity: The backup is tied to the WhatsApp phone number and the Apple/iCloud or Google Account used to create it. You need access to the same number and account when restoring.
- Make room: On iPhone, WhatsApp says available space in both iCloud and iPhone storage should be at least 2.05 times the backup size. On Android, allow sufficient space in both the Google Account and phone storage.
- Prepare the connection: Use a stable internet connection. WhatsApp recommends Wi-Fi for an initial Android backup to avoid mobile-data charges and advises keeping the phone connected to power during a long backup.
- Save encryption credentials: If you enabled WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backups, keep the password or 64-digit encryption key. Without the correct credential, that backup cannot be decrypted for restoration.
- Decide about videos: Include videos in the backup if you want them restored. iPhone video restoration depends on whether videos were included in the latest backup.
Back up WhatsApp on iPhone to iCloud
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings (or your profile photo), then Chats > Chat Backup.
- Choose an Auto Backup frequency, or tap Back Up Now to create a manual backup.
- Set whether to include videos, then allow the backup to finish. For a large backup, keep the phone on a stable connection and connected to power.
- Check the time and size shown on the Chat Backup screen so you know which snapshot is available for a later restore.
WhatsApp also describes backing up an iPhone through the device’s iCloud backup as a separate path. You may use either or both, but using both requires additional iCloud storage. WhatsApp’s guidance says enabling its encrypted in-app backup prevents use of the iPhone backup option described there. Menu wording can vary by app language and version.

Back up WhatsApp on Android to a Google Account
- In WhatsApp, tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Choose the Google Account backup frequency and select the Google Account to use. Choose whether to include videos.
- Start the backup and keep the phone connected to a stable network; Wi-Fi is advisable for an initial backup. Keep the phone powered during a lengthy upload.
- When the backup completes, note its date and size on the Chat Backup screen.
Before starting, make sure a Google Account is active on the phone, Google Play Services is installed, and both the phone and Google Account have enough free storage. WhatsApp says an Android backup that has not been updated for five months might be automatically deleted by Google. A new backup to the same account overwrites the preceding backup, and WhatsApp says the older Google Account backup cannot be restored.

Restore a backup on a new or reinstalled phone
Restoring is offered during WhatsApp setup; Chat Backup settings do not have a separate Restore control. If you have already activated WhatsApp on the destination phone, WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance recommends uninstalling and reinstalling it to bring up the restore step. Confirm that you are using the number and cloud account associated with the backup before proceeding.
Restore on iPhone
- On the old iPhone, if available, check WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup for the backup time and size.
- Install or reinstall WhatsApp on the new iPhone and verify the same phone number. Make sure the iPhone is signed in to the same Apple Account used for the backup.
- When WhatsApp offers Restore Chat History, tap it and let the restore complete.
Messages sent or received after the backup snapshot will not be restored. Video restoration depends on whether videos were included in that backup.

Restore on Android
- Make sure the destination phone has the same Google Account used for the backup.
- Install or reinstall WhatsApp, verify the same phone number, and accept Restore when prompted during initial setup.
- Allow the restore to finish before continuing to use WhatsApp.
If the prompt does not appear, confirm the Google Account and number match the backup, then check the failure steps below. The backup is not restored from the Chat Backup settings page.

Transfer chats between iPhone and Android
WhatsApp supports transfers in both directions, but the detailed steps below are specifically for moving from iPhone to Android. Check WhatsApp’s current guidance for the reverse direction rather than assuming the same procedure applies. For iPhone-to-Android transfer, the stated requirements include Android 6 or later, up-to-date WhatsApp on both phones, the same phone number on both, stable Wi-Fi, and access to the old iPhone and its WhatsApp data.

- On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Chats > Transfer Chat History > Transfer to Android.
- Begin setting up WhatsApp on the new Android phone and verify the same phone number. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the phones.
- When a QR code appears on Android, scan it with the old iPhone and keep the iPhone unlocked while the transfer runs.
- Wait for completion; the time required depends on the amount of data. Keep the old phone’s WhatsApp data until you have confirmed the chats on Android.
The transfer cannot be performed after WhatsApp has been activated on the new Android without first uninstalling it. New chats created on the destination do not merge with the old phone’s chats. WhatsApp says the local Wi-Fi transfer does not send the transfer data to cloud storage. Its listed exclusions include the display name, status updates, and media received through Channels.

- No restore prompt: Verify the WhatsApp number and cloud account, and remember that restore is offered during setup. If WhatsApp is already activated on the destination, uninstall and reinstall to return to setup.
- Backup stalls or is incomplete: Check the connection, free space on the phone and cloud account, WhatsApp and operating-system versions, and power. Interrupted connectivity or insufficient storage can prevent completion.
- iPhone backup not found: Confirm the correct Apple Account and that iCloud Drive is enabled, including for WhatsApp. WhatsApp says the saved backup must be in the same Apple Account or iCloud Drive.
- Encrypted backup will not open: Enter the correct password or 64-digit encryption key. WhatsApp cannot decrypt an encrypted backup without its credential.
- Older backup needed: Do not assume it can be recovered. A new backup overwrites the previous cloud backup, and WhatsApp says it cannot restore a backup that has become corrupted or recover chat history from its servers.
WhatsApp’s Help Center states that a Google Account backup may be automatically deleted by Google if it has not been updated for five months. Check the latest backup date before migrating rather than relying on an old snapshot.
