Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo let another device on your local network use Ollama, set OLLAMA_HOST to a network bind address, restart Ollama, and allow access only through a suitably narrow host-firewall rule. Ollama’s local API has no authentication, so binding it to a network interface does not make it safe for every device that can reach that interface. Do not forward port 11434 from your router to the internet.
What changes when you expose Ollama?
Ollama listens on 127.0.0.1:11434 by default, which makes the service available on the host itself rather than to other devices on the network. Its FAQ says to change the bind address with the OLLAMA_HOST environment variable. Setting it to 0.0.0.0:11434 makes Ollama listen on all IPv4 interfaces; it does not, on its own, limit access to your home or office LAN. Ollama FAQ

Whether another device can connect also depends on routing and firewall rules. Most importantly, Ollama’s documentation says its local API does not require authentication. Anyone who can reach the listener may be able to use it, so treat network binding as enabling reachability—not as a security boundary. Ollama Authentication

Expose Ollama to devices on your LAN
- Set the bind address where the Ollama server starts. The common setting in Ollama’s FAQ is
OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434. The exact way to set it depends on your operating system and how Ollama was installed. - Restart Ollama. The new environment variable takes effect when the server or app starts again. Ollama’s FAQ describes different procedures for macOS, systemd-managed Linux installations, and Windows; follow the current instructions for your installation rather than applying a command intended for another platform. Ollama FAQ
- Restrict inbound traffic with the host firewall. Where your operating system allows it, permit TCP port
11434only on the trusted or private network profile, and narrow the rule to the client subnet or specific devices that need access. Do not allow the port on public network profiles. Exact firewall steps vary by operating system and network configuration. - Connect from the other device using the Ollama host’s private network address. Use that address with port
11434, for example ashttp://<host-private-address>:11434. The address must be one assigned to the Ollama computer on your LAN; its exact value varies.
Ollama documents the environment-variable setting and restart requirement, but does not provide a complete inbound-firewall recipe for every operating system and LAN design. Confirm both that the host firewall allows the intended client and that the client is using the correct private address.

Keep the service off the public internet
A listener and a public service are not the same thing. 0.0.0.0 means listening on all IPv4 interfaces available to the host; firewall rules, network routing, router configuration, and any proxy or tunnel determine who can actually reach it.
- Do not create a router WAN port-forward for TCP port
11434. - Keep the host-firewall rule limited to the private network and intended clients; avoid permitting access on public profiles.
- If you put Ollama behind a reverse proxy or tunnel, check where it listens and what access controls it enforces. Ollama’s example proxy and tunnel configurations do not by themselves guarantee private access. Ollama FAQ
Because the API has no authentication by default, a public listener should not be treated as protected merely because it uses a proxy or a non-obvious address. Any design that makes it reachable beyond the trusted LAN needs an appropriate access-control layer and a deliberate security plan. Ollama Authentication · Ollama Security

Choose LAN access or private remote access
| Access pattern | Where the client is | Network boundary | What to configure |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAN-only | On the same trusted local network | Ollama listens on a network interface; the host firewall should allow only intended private-network clients. No router port-forward is needed. | Set OLLAMA_HOST, restart Ollama, and configure a narrow inbound firewall rule. |
| Private network for remote access | Away from the local network | A private networking service provides a path governed by its device or user access policy; do not publish Ollama’s port directly to the internet. | Configure the private network and its access policy, as well as Ollama’s listener and host-firewall controls. |
Tailscale is one possible private-network option. Its firewall FAQ says that most users do not need to open firewall ports for Tailscale connectivity; that does not configure Ollama’s listener or replace an appropriate device and user policy for the private network. Tailscale firewall FAQ

Troubleshoot a device that cannot connect
- Ollama still appears local-only: verify that
OLLAMA_HOSTis set in the environment that launches the server, then restart the app or service. - The other device cannot reach the host: confirm it is on the intended LAN, is using the host’s private address and port
11434, and is not blocked by firewall or routing rules. - It works only after allowing broad firewall access: replace that broad rule with one scoped to the private network and, where practical, the required client subnet or devices. Do not leave the port allowed on public profiles.
- You need access while away: do not solve that by forwarding port
11434from the router. Use a private remote-access path with a clear access policy instead.
