Do not wait until after an ending has been recorded. Depending on how the game writes progress, an ending may update the only usable slot or checkpoint. Backing up first preserves the exact state from which the final branch begins.

The local-folder method is the only procedure for which a concrete Tenebris Somnia path is documented. Console filesystem locations and a developer-authored console restore procedure have not been published, so console instructions must remain platform-level rather than pretending there is a known game folder.
Before you copy anything
- Reach the decision point first. Play until the game places you immediately before the final choice that determines the ending.
- Finish any optional preparation. If you want a particular inventory, health state or collectible status at the branch, arrange it before making the backup. The copy preserves the state exactly as it exists at that moment.
- Know which installation you are backing up. A normal Windows installation and a Proton installation store files in different places. Use the section that matches your setup.

Windows: create a complete pre-ending backup
This procedure uses File Explorer and does not require a third-party backup utility. Copying the whole directory is safer than selecting one file because the game’s save data may include more than a single slot or extension.
- Stop at the final branch. Do not select an ending yet. If the game has just displayed the final prompt, leave it on that prompt or at the immediately preceding safe state.
- Exit to the desktop. Use the game’s quit option, then wait until the desktop is visible.
- Close Tenebris Somnia completely. Check that the game is no longer running before copying. A file that is still being written can produce an incomplete or inconsistent backup.
- Open the save directory. Press Windows+R, paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGames, and press Enter. You can also paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. Using the address bar bypasses the fact thatAppDatais normally hidden. - Confirm that you are in the expected folder. The final directory name should be
SaveGames, insideTenebrisSomniaSaved. If the folder is empty or missing, do not delete anything; recheck that the game has been launched at least once and that you are using the intended Windows account. - Copy the entire folder. Select
SaveGames, choose Copy, then navigate to a separate destination and choose Paste. Do not copy only the newest-looking file. - Give the backup a unique name. A useful example is
TenebrisSomnia-before-ending-2026-10-19. Include the date and, if you make more than one backup, a short description of the branch state. - Keep both copies. The original remains the active game data; the dated folder is the recovery copy. Open the backup only to check that it exists, not to edit its contents.
- Make a second independent copy when the choice is important. Copy the dated folder to another drive or removable storage. This protects against an accidental deletion or a failing system drive, but it is optional for the basic ending reload.
At this point you have a frozen pre-choice state. The game can now be launched normally and the first ending viewed without changing the preserved folder.
Play the first ending without destroying the backup
Launch the game and continue from the active save. Complete the final decision and watch the ending. Do not paste new files into the dated backup, rename files inside it, or use it as the folder from which the game runs. The live SaveGames directory may change as the ending is recorded; that is expected. The untouched dated copy is what allows you to return to the earlier branch.

If you want to keep a record of the first outcome, write down the choice or capture a screenshot outside the save directory. Do not assume that an in-game “continue” option will preserve a pre-choice checkpoint; checkpoint timing and slot behavior have not been officially confirmed.
Windows: restore the pre-choice state for the alternate ending
Restoration is a copy-and-replace operation. It is conservative because it leaves the post-ending data available under a different name instead of deleting it immediately.
- Quit the game again. Exit to the desktop and make sure Tenebris Somnia is fully closed before touching the files.
- Open the parent directory. In File Explorer, go to
%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSaved. You should see the currentSaveGamesfolder and your dated backup elsewhere. - Preserve the current ending state. Rename the live folder to something such as
SaveGames-after-ending, or move it to a separate location. Renaming is preferable to deleting because it gives you a way back if you later need that state. - Copy the dated backup into the parent directory. Copy the backup folder itself, not just its contents, so the resulting path is exactly
%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGames. - Check the folder nesting. Avoid creating an extra level such as
SaveGamesTenebrisSomnia-before-ending-2026-10-19. The game must find its files directly under the finalSaveGamesdirectory. - Relaunch Tenebris Somnia. Load the available save and verify that the game returns you to the state before the final choice. If it opens at the ending or shows no expected progress, close it without saving and recheck the folder path.
- Make the alternate decision. Once the pre-choice state is confirmed, choose the other documented ending branch.
The available data does not describe a developer-provided restore utility or checksum process. The instructions above are ordinary Windows file management based on the documented save path, so keep the renamed post-ending folder until you are certain the restored copy works.
Finding saves for a Windows build running through Proton
PCGamingWiki lists a Steam Play/Proton location under the Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/2121510 prefix. Proton presents a Windows-style environment inside that prefix, so the save folder is not necessarily in your host system’s ordinary %LOCALAPPDATA% location.

- Identify the library that contains the game. Steam can use more than one library drive, so start with the library where Tenebris Somnia is installed.
- Locate the matching compatibility prefix. Browse to that library’s
steamapps/compatdata/2121510directory. The app ID can vary between installations, so do not assume that the number is universal if your installation uses a different prefix. - Look inside the prefix for the Windows save structure. Find the equivalent of
AppDataLocalTenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGameswithin the prefix. The exact surroundingpfxpath depends on the Proton layout and library location. - Close the game before copying. Proton does not change the requirement to stop the process before taking a backup.
- Copy the entire
SaveGamesdirectory to a location outside the prefix. Name it with the date and branch, then retain the original prefix data. - Restore by moving the post-ending folder aside and copying the backup back into the same Proton path. Recreate the identical directory structure before launching.
If you cannot find the prefix, search each Steam library’s steamappscompatdata directory for a folder containing the Tenebris Somnia save structure. Because library locations and app IDs can differ, the reliable test is whether the folder’s timestamps change when the game saves, not whether a particular number appears.
How Steam Cloud fits into the plan
The Steam store listing includes Steam Cloud, which can be useful for moving progress between computers. It does not, by itself, prove that a pre-ending state will remain available after an ending is saved. The available save-system information did not confirm synchronization timing, conflict resolution, or whether every save change is uploaded immediately.
- Do not delete your local dated copy because Steam Cloud is enabled. Cloud data can synchronize the newer post-ending state, depending on timing and conflict decisions.
- Close the game before local replacement. A running client may write the post-ending state back over the restored folder.
- Expect a cloud conflict prompt after changing files. Read the timestamps and choose deliberately; do not click through automatically if Steam reports different local and cloud versions.
- Use the local folder as the authority for this ending experiment. Keep the backup until the alternate branch has loaded and you no longer need the original ending state.
- Do not present any autosave interval or slot count as established fact. Those details were not confirmed in the available launch information.
If cloud synchronization repeatedly restores the post-ending state, temporarily prevent the client from launching the game while you replace the files, then resolve any conflict in favor of the dated local copy. The precise Steam interface can change, so rely on the conflict dialog’s displayed timestamps rather than a remembered menu path.
PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series
The publisher lists Tenebris Somnia for PC storefronts plus PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series. No researched source supplies a console filesystem path or a game-specific restore procedure. Console players should therefore use the platform’s own saved-data management tools and treat any game-specific instruction found elsewhere as unverified until it matches the current system software.

- Back up before the final branch. Use the console’s supported cloud-save or external-storage feature, where available, before selecting the ending.
- Record the date and account. A platform backup tied to the wrong user profile will not restore the intended progress.
- Prevent an automatic overwrite when possible. If the platform offers choices between local and cloud data, note which timestamp is from before the ending.
- Restore through the platform menu, not by searching for a hidden game folder. Console storage is managed by the operating system, and the available data does not establish a user-accessible Tenebris Somnia directory.

The path does not open
Paste the complete path directly into File Explorer’s address bar, including the percent signs and the final folder name. If it still fails, launch the game once, reach a saveable point, exit fully, and try again. Confirm that you are using the Windows account that played the game. Do not create a random replacement folder and expect the game to discover it.
The folder is empty
Check that Tenebris Somnia is closed and that you are looking at the correct installation. For Proton, inspect the appropriate Steam library’s compatibility prefix rather than the host Windows-style location. An empty folder is not evidence that the game has no saves; it may indicate the wrong user profile or prefix.

Close the game without making another save. Return to the parent directory and verify that the restored folder is named exactly SaveGames and sits directly under TenebrisSomniaSaved. Check for an extra nesting level and confirm that you copied the dated backup, not the renamed post-ending folder. If necessary, move the restored folder aside and repeat the copy from the untouched backup.

No save appears after copying
Check that the backup contains the files and subfolders that were present before the ending, rather than an empty parent directory. On Proton, confirm that the copy went back into the same prefix used by the game. Do not keep launching and saving while troubleshooting, because each launch can alter the state you are trying to recover.
Steam reports different local and cloud data
Stop and compare the timestamps shown by Steam. The pre-ending local copy should have the earlier date you assigned, while the cloud version may reflect the ending. Preserve both states by keeping your renamed post-ending folder and dated backup; choose the pre-ending copy only when you intend to return to that branch.
The backup was overwritten
If you replaced the dated folder with the post-ending files, check whether you made a second copy on another drive.
