Back up before you install anything. Close The Sims 2, copy either the complete user folder or the specific neighborhood folder to a dated location outside your live game files, and test mods on a clone whenever possible. If a mod damages your save, restore by replacing the entire neighborhood folder—not by merging files into it.

What you are protecting

The Sims 2 stores each neighborhood as a folder inside the user game’s Neighborhoods directory. The folder names are usually numeric codes rather than names you see in the neighborhood chooser:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Neighborhood Common folder code
Pleasantview N001
Strangetown N002
Veronaville N003
Riverblossom Hills G001

A neighborhood folder contains the lots, Sims, relationships, memories and other data needed to load that world. Replacing the complete folder returns that neighborhood to the state captured in your backup. A single corrupted file can therefore be difficult to repair safely by hand; a complete folder copy is the dependable rollback unit.

Your active saves are normally under DocumentsEA Games, but the parent folder’s name differs between disc releases and the Ultimate Collection. Some computers also have more than one Documents location because of cloud synchronization. Open the path used by the game on your computer rather than assuming that the first EA Games folder you find is live.

Choose the right kind of backup

There are two useful backup scopes. Make the choice based on how much you need to recover and how quickly you need to make the copy.

Method Recovery scope Storage and speed Identifying the restore target Best use
Complete Sims 2 user-folder copy All neighborhoods, downloads, settings and other user data in that folder Larger and slower to copy Very easy: restore the complete known-good user folder or retrieve any neighborhood from it A major mod overhaul, troubleshooting, or maximum recovery coverage
Neighborhood-only copy One neighborhood, such as N001 Small and quick Easy if you have confirmed the code; risky if you confuse similarly named folders A focused rollback before changing one world

For important saves, keep both: a complete user-folder snapshot for broad recovery and a neighborhood-only snapshot for quick experiments. Always store the copy outside the live EA Games folder. A second internal drive, USB flash drive or external hard drive protects you if the original Documents folder is overwritten or damaged.

Before copying anything

  • Exit The Sims 2 completely. Do not copy while the game is running or while a save is being written.
  • Wait for the game window and launcher, if present, to close before opening the save folder.
  • Locate the active user folder under DocumentsEA Games and open its Neighborhoods subfolder.
  • Open the neighborhood in-game first if you are unsure which code belongs to which world; write down the mapping you use.
  • Create a destination outside the live folder, preferably on a second device.
  • Use a dated, descriptive name such as Sims2_N001_before_mod_2026-10-19 or Sims2_userfolder_before_mod_2026-10-19.

A date and purpose in the folder name prevents the common mistake of restoring an older snapshot by accident. If you make several backups in one day, add the mod name or a sequence number.

Make a complete user-folder backup

This is the broadest rollback because it preserves every neighborhood and the rest of the user data present at the time of the copy.

  1. Close The Sims 2 and confirm that no game process is still writing to the save.
  2. In File Explorer, open the active folder beneath DocumentsEA Games. Its exact name depends on your edition.
  3. Select the entire Sims 2 user folder—the folder that contains Neighborhoods, not just the Neighborhoods subfolder.
  4. Copy it to your dated backup location. Do not drag it back into the live EA Games directory; the backup must remain separate.
  5. Open the copied folder and verify that it contains the expected Neighborhoods directory and the neighborhood codes you intended to protect.
  6. Record the backup date and what you plan to install. A short text note beside the copy is enough.

Copying can take time if the user folder also contains a large Downloads directory. Do not cancel partway through and treat the incomplete destination as usable. Finish the copy, then check that the destination opens normally and that the expected neighborhood folder is present.

Make a neighborhood-only backup

Use this method when you need a fast rollback for one world and do not need to preserve every other user file.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open the active user folder under DocumentsEA Games…Neighborhoods.
  3. Identify the complete folder for the neighborhood you are changing—for example, N001 for Pleasantview, N002 for Strangetown, N003 for Veronaville or G001 for Riverblossom Hills.
  4. Copy that entire folder, including all of its contents, to a location outside the live folder.
  5. Rename the copied folder or its containing backup directory with the neighborhood name, code, date and reason, such as Sims2_N001_Pleasantview_before_story_mod_2026-10-19.
  6. Open the copy to confirm that it is not empty and that its size is plausible compared with the live folder.

Do not copy individual package, character or lot files in an attempt to create a neighborhood backup. The folder’s files work together, and a partial copy may not represent a loadable state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clone for safer mod experiments

A backup is a rollback; a clone is a separate test subject. If you want to keep playing your main Pleasantview while trying unfamiliar mods, begin with a duplicate and make changes only to that duplicate.

  1. Back up your current user folder or neighborhood first. A clone is not a substitute for an untouched backup.
  2. Find the installed game’s clean premade-neighborhood files in its TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods directory. Disc installations and the Ultimate Collection use different installation roots, but both use this TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods location for factory premade neighborhoods.
  3. Copy the premade neighborhood folder you need to a separate working location before placing or testing it in the user game. Keep the original installed-game copy unchanged.
  4. Use the duplicate as the world in which you install and evaluate the mod set. Do not open your only untouched neighborhood and save after adding an untested mod.
  5. Keep a note of the exact mod files added and the order in which you added them. Install one coherent set at a time so that a problem has a narrow range of possible causes.

A clone preserves the state you deliberately copied, including its current progress, while a factory copy returns a premade world to Maxis’s shipped state. Choose the clone when your goal is to retain your story and households; choose a factory copy when you want to discard all user progress in that premade neighborhood.

Install and test mods without losing your main save

The safest routine is incremental rather than a single large Downloads-folder change.

  1. Make or refresh the backup immediately before the change.
  2. Write down the mod name, version, required expansion packs and any load-order instruction supplied by its creator.
  3. Change one mod or one clearly defined set at a time on the clone.
  4. Start the game, load the test neighborhood and exercise the feature that the mod changes. Enter and leave lots, save, quit and reload.
  5. Watch for missing interactions, error dialogs, flashing or missing objects, Sims disappearing, lots failing to load, or a neighborhood that no longer appears.
  6. If the test is clean, make a new dated snapshot before the next change. If it fails, remove the current test neighborhood and restore the last known-good copy rather than continuing to save over it.

This is a cautious editorial workflow, not a published success-rate statistic: no controlled benchmark establishes how often a Sims 2 backup succeeds. Your protection comes from an intact copy and a reversible sequence of changes, not from assuming that every mod is harmless.

Restore a neighborhood from a backup

Restoration replaces the whole neighborhood folder. Merging a backup’s files into a damaged folder can leave incompatible or corrupted files behind.

  1. Exit The Sims 2 completely.
  2. Open the active user path, then Neighborhoods. Confirm that you are in the folder the game actually uses, especially if cloud synchronization has created duplicate Documents locations.
  3. Move the current neighborhood folder with the matching code out of Neighborhoods to a temporary holding folder. Do not delete it immediately; retaining it gives you a last-resort copy if you discover that you selected the wrong backup.
  4. Check that the live Neighborhoods directory no longer contains the damaged folder’s code.
  5. Copy the intact backup folder into the live Neighborhoods directory. Preserve the expected folder identifier, such as N001; do not paste the backup’s files into a newly damaged folder.
  6. Start the game and open the restored neighborhood before adding any mods back. Check several households and lots, load and save only after you are satisfied that the correct state returned.
  7. Keep the removed damaged folder until you have verified the restoration. Then archive or delete it only if you no longer need it.

If the game reports that the neighborhood is missing, close it and check the folder level. The usual structure is …NeighborhoodsN001, not an accidental extra layer such as …NeighborhoodsBackupN001 unless the game is configured to use that path. The folder code must be in the active Neighborhoods directory.

Reset a premade neighborhood to factory content

A backup restores your own captured progress. A factory reset discards that progress and returns a premade neighborhood to its shipped content.

  1. Close the game and move the current user neighborhood folder out of the active Neighborhoods directory.
  2. Locate the matching clean premade folder in the installed game’s TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods directory.
  3. Copy that clean folder into the user Neighborhoods directory, retaining its original identifier.
  4. Start the game and verify that the neighborhood loads as a factory premade world.

Use this route only when you intentionally want Maxis defaults. If you want to preserve your households, relationships and story progress, restore your dated user backup or use a clone instead.

Move saves after the game generates a new user folder

Troubleshooting can cause the game to create a fresh Sims 2 user folder. The new folder may look empty even though your old saves still exist elsewhere.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Identify which newly generated user folder the game opened by launching once and checking where its Neighborhoods directory was created.
  3. From your old user folder or dated backup, copy the required complete neighborhood folder.
  4. Paste it into the new folder’s Neighborhoods directory. Do not merge its contents into an existing damaged folder; move the conflicting folder aside first.
  5. Launch the game and verify the neighborhood before restoring additional custom content.

Edition-specific folder names vary, so compare the actual paths on disk rather than relying on a generic name found in a guide. If two locations contain an EA Games directory, the one that changes when the game creates a test save is the stronger indication of the active path.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Copying while the game is open

A save can change during play. Close the game first; if you copied while it was open, discard that snapshot and make a new one after a clean exit.

Backing up inside the live folder

A folder named “Backup” under the active EA Games directory can be mistaken for live data, overwritten during troubleshooting or synchronized unexpectedly. Move the backup to a separate drive or an unrelated top-level folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring by merge

Dragging old files into a damaged neighborhood leaves any unrecognized files in place. Move the entire current folder out, then copy the entire intact folder in its place.

Choosing the wrong code

Codes are easy to confuse when several neighborhoods are present. Confirm the code before copying and label the backup with both the code and the human-readable neighborhood name.

Assuming every Documents folder is active

Cloud-sync software can produce duplicate Documents paths. Check the folder that the game is currently writing to, and avoid replacing files in an inactive copy.

Overwriting your only good copy

Never use the same backup as a working test folder. Keep one untouched snapshot and make a separate clone or test copy from it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maintenance routine that stays reliable

  • Keep an untouched pre-mod snapshot for each important neighborhood.
  • After a successful, stable testing session, create a new dated snapshot instead of replacing the old one immediately.
  • Maintain at least one copy on a second physical device.
  • Keep a plain-text inventory of the mod set associated with each snapshot.
  • Periodically open a copy in a test user folder to confirm that your backups are readable before you need an emergency restore.
  • When deleting old snapshots, retain more than one known-good point so a problem discovered late is not your only recovery option.

The practical rule is simple: close the game, copy the complete folder you intend to protect, store it outside the live path, and replace whole neighborhood folders during recovery. A clone lets you experiment while the original remains untouched; a factory copy is reserved for deliberately returning a premade world to its shipped state.
