The safest way to protect a permadeath save is to use the game’s own export or backup command. If it has none, quit the game completely, copy the entire save folder—including companion files—to a dated second location, and verify the copy before beginning the run. Keep the original backup untouched, record the platform and game version, and make a fresh copy of the current save before attempting any restoration.
A backup can technically return a character to an earlier state after death, but that may violate the rules or purpose of a hardcore challenge. Treat restoration as a deliberate rules decision, not as an automatic entitlement. The game may also reject an old, incomplete, cross-platform, or cloud-overwritten copy.

What a save backup actually protects
A save backup is a separate copy of the files that describe your character, world, profile, inventory, and progress. It is not the same as reinstalling the game. An installation backup contains program files; the save may be stored elsewhere and may need to be copied back manually.
Recommended Free Tools
Back up the complete save folder rather than one file that happens to have a familiar extension. Many games use companion files for metadata, indexes, settings, profiles, or transaction journals. Omitting one can make a restored save appear corrupt or cause the game to create a blank profile.

The useful backup is the one the game can still read. A copy made while the game is writing may be internally inconsistent. A copy from the wrong profile, platform, game edition, or patch level may also fail. Every backup should therefore carry enough context to identify it later.
- Platform and edition, such as PC, console, or a specific launcher.
- Game version or patch number.
- Profile, character, world, or slot name.
- Date and time of the copy.
- Whether the copy was made before a run, after a milestone, or for disaster recovery.
Compare the available backup methods
| Method | Official export or import | Where the copy lives | Main overwrite risk | Cross-platform behavior | Permadeath consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in game backup | Usually yes; the game creates and restores its own format | Local backup folder, often an archive | Lower, because the game labels the backup; still protect the archive | Usually limited to the same game platform or edition | Technically convenient, but restoring after death may violate a challenge’s rules |
| Manual save-folder copy | No universal import command; files are copied back | Removable drive, separate computer, or cloud-storage account | Wrong folder, incomplete copy, or copying over the only good version | Works only when the game uses compatible save formats and locations | Gives maximum control, so the player must decide whether recovery is allowed |
| Steam Cloud | Synchronization rather than a user-managed history | Steam’s remote storage plus local files | Changes from two computers can create a conflict or replace the desired state | Useful between supported Steam installations, not a general console transfer | It does not create a guaranteed pre-death archive |
| Console automatic cloud backup | Platform-dependent; some games upload recent worlds automatically | Console account cloud and local storage | Offline progress may not have uploaded; a newer state can supersede an older one | Normally tied to the console ecosystem and account | Check whether the upload happened before relying on it |
| Documented cross-save system | Only where the developer explicitly supports it | Linked platform accounts or approved transfer service | Unsupported versions may not exchange saves at all | Can work across named platforms, but support is selective | Transfer rules do not change the game’s intended permadeath rules |
Use the highest-level method the game officially supports. A built-in backup is preferable to manipulating files, and an independent manual copy is safer than treating synchronization as version history.
Prepare a backup before a permadeath run
1. Find the authoritative save location
Start with the game’s current support page, readme, or in-game backup screen. Save locations change with patches, launchers, operating systems, and profiles. Do not assume that the installation directory contains the save, and do not rely on a search result for a different edition.
If the game provides an in-game list of worlds or profiles, note the exact slot name. That name lets you distinguish the intended save from test files, automatic checkpoints, and older characters.
2. Quit cleanly
Exit to the title screen if the game recommends it, then quit the game and launcher. Wait for any save or synchronization indicator to finish. Never copy a folder while the game is actively writing to it. If a launcher remains open and is still synchronizing, allow it to finish or follow the game’s instructions for pausing synchronization.
3. Copy the complete folder
Copy the entire authoritative save folder, including subfolders and companion files, to a second physical or logical location. An external storage drive gives you a removable local copy; cloud storage can provide another copy away from the gaming device. Do not move the original and do not edit files inside the backup.
4. Name the backup so it can be identified
Use a name such as GameName_Profile-World_PreRun_2026-10-18_v1.4.2_PC. If the folder name cannot contain all details, add a plain-text note beside the copy. Include the platform, version, profile or slot, and date. A timestamp without a version is often insufficient after a major patch.

5. Verify the copy
Open the destination and confirm that the expected files, subfolders, and plausible timestamps are present. Compare the folder size with the original. Where the game offers an import, restore, or backup browser, use that interface for validation rather than opening the files manually. Keep the archive until you have successfully loaded the intended profile.
Game-specific procedures
Minecraft Java Edition: use Make Backup
Minecraft Java has a built-in world backup. From Singleplayer, select the world, choose Edit, then choose Make Backup. The game creates a dated ZIP archive. Select Open Backups Folder to see the resulting files.
Keep the ZIP outside the active saves folder as a second copy. Before a high-risk session, make a new backup and record the Minecraft version. To restore, use the game’s world-management or backup workflow when available, select the intended dated archive, and check that the correct world name and recent progress appear before continuing.
Minecraft Bedrock: restore on the same platform family
Bedrock restoration is platform-specific. Mojang’s guidance is to move the manual world-backup file into the current world-file location for that platform. The exact location and file format depend on whether the world is on Windows, a console, or another supported device.
Close Minecraft first, preserve the current world folder in a quarantine copy, and then follow the current platform instructions. Do not place a Java world archive into a Bedrock location or assume that a file copied from one console edition is accepted by another.
Steam games: separate installation backup from saves
Steam’s Backup feature packages game files. Steam warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders do not work with that feature, and a game’s saves may live elsewhere. Restoring the installation therefore may not restore the character or world; the save files may need to be copied back manually.
Identify the game’s save path from its official support material. Make the manual copy while the game is closed, and keep it separate from Steam’s installation backup. If the game has its own export command, use that instead of guessing which files Steam should preserve.

Steam Cloud: synchronization, not guaranteed history
Steamworks describes Steam Cloud as remote file storage that replicates configured files and downloads them before launch on another computer. That makes it useful for continuity, but it does not guarantee a browsable series of older versions.

A cloud copy can therefore be newer than the local backup, older than it, or the wrong profile if the timing is misunderstood. Before a permadeath run, create an independent dated copy rather than relying on Cloud alone.
Xbox Minecraft: check whether the world uploaded
Minecraft on Xbox automatically backs up recent worlds when the player is online and signed in. A world created or changed while offline can remain device-only until it is uploaded or played online. Before depending on the cloud copy, connect, sign in, and allow synchronization to complete. Keep a manual copy where the platform permits one, especially for a world you cannot afford to lose.
Hades and selective cross-save support
Supergiant documents cloud saves for Hades on Steam and Epic and cross-save between PC or Mac and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions do not transfer saves between each other. This illustrates why a platform label is essential: a save system that works for one pair of platforms cannot be generalized to every edition.
Use only the transfer path documented for the exact Hades platforms you own. Preserve a local or removable backup before moving a profile, and verify the destination profile after the transfer.
General PC guidance when cloud saving is unavailable
Ubisoft’s general guidance is to copy local save files to a later-accessible location, such as cloud storage or an external storage drive, when cloud saving is unavailable or disabled. The same principle applies to other PC games: copy the complete folder, retain the original, and document the version and profile.
How to restore a backup safely
- Identify the target. Confirm the game, platform, edition, profile or world, and the backup date you intend to use. Check the game’s current official instructions for the authoritative save location.
- Quit everything that can write the save. Exit the game and launcher cleanly. Do not restore while a synchronization process, update, or cloud conflict dialog is active.
- Preserve the current state. Copy the current save folder to a separate quarantine folder before changing anything. This gives you a way back if the selected backup is wrong or newer progress is accidentally discarded.
- Control synchronization deliberately. Pause or disable automatic cloud synchronization only when the game or platform instructions require it. Otherwise, resolve the conflict dialog after comparing dates and locations. Never choose a cloud or local version blindly.
- Use the official import or restore command. If the game has one, select the dated archive or backup from that interface. For a manual restore, replace the active save only after confirming that the destination path belongs to the intended profile.
- Copy all required files. Restore the complete folder and its companion files, not only the newest-looking file. Keep the quarantine copy untouched until the result has been checked.
- Launch and inspect. Open the game, select the expected profile or world, and check the character, inventory, location, and recent milestones. If the game reports corruption, stop rather than saving over the backup.
- Protect the archive. Do not overwrite the dated backup until the restored state is confirmed. Make a new backup of the successfully restored state if you plan to continue playing.
Handling cloud conflicts and wrong-version restores
A conflict means that the service found different local and remote files; it is not proof that either copy is correct. Compare timestamps, profile names, and the last known action. If you cannot establish which state is intended, preserve both copies first and postpone the choice.

If the cloud repeatedly replaces your manual restore, quit again, preserve the restored folder in a separate location, and follow the game’s instructions for pausing synchronization. Re-enable synchronization only after the desired state has loaded and you understand which copy the service will upload.
A save that loads but shows an earlier patch, missing items, or a blank profile may be from the wrong slot or version. Return to the quarantine copy, check the backup note, and try the archive that matches the installed game version. Do not keep launching and saving different candidates over the only known-good copy.

There are two separate questions: can the files be restored, and is restoration allowed by the rules you have chosen?
Technically, a pre-death copy can return a character to an earlier state if the game accepts the files. That does not make the run legitimately deathless under every community’s definition. The Darkest Dungeon community reference calls backing up a save and restoring it after an unfavorable result “save scumming.” Some players permit backups for hardware failure, corruption, or disaster recovery while forbidding them after an in-game death; others allow unrestricted experimentation.
Set the rule before starting. A clear policy might allow restoration only for corruption or a confirmed technical failure, prohibit restoration after character death, and require keeping the original backup untouched for audit. If you are following a tournament, streamer, server, or community challenge, use its published definition rather than inventing an exception after the result is known.
Game validation can also matter. Some titles store progress remotely, sign saves, or rewrite metadata when loading. A manually restored file may be rejected, treated as a new profile, or trigger an achievement and leaderboard discrepancy. No backup method can guarantee that a game will accept an altered history or bypass a permadeath rule.

The backup folder is empty or missing files
Check that the game was fully closed before copying and that you selected the profile’s authoritative location. Look for companion subfolders and hidden files where the platform uses them. Re-copy the folder to a new dated destination rather than modifying the first attempt.

The restored world or character does not appear
Confirm the platform, edition, profile name, and version. A correct archive in the wrong platform-specific directory can be invisible. Use the game’s import screen when one exists, and verify that the active account is the one that created the save.
The game reports corruption
Stop launching candidates and preserve the corrupted state separately. Try the game’s official restore process with an earlier complete backup. If every archive fails, the copy may have been made during a write, may lack companion files, or may be incompatible with the current patch.
Steam Cloud restores the wrong state
Do not immediately accept the next conflict choice. Quit, preserve both local and remote versions where the platform allows, compare timestamps, and consult the game’s current support instructions. Steam Cloud is synchronization and may not retain the older version you need.

Check whether the developer explicitly supports that exact pair of platforms. Hades, for example, documents some PC, Mac, Switch, Steam, and Epic combinations but not PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 transfer. Unsupported combinations require starting a new save or using an officially supported migration path.
The backup was overwritten
Use dated, write-protected or otherwise separate destinations and never restore directly over the only archive. If an external drive or cloud account has version history, look for an earlier copy; otherwise, recovery may not be possible.
Maintain backups without creating confusion
Use a small rotation instead of one constantly overwritten file. Keep a pre-run archive, a milestone archive, and a separate emergency copy when the run matters. Store at least one copy away from the gaming device, and label every copy with platform, version, profile, and date.
After a major game update, make a fresh backup before loading the old save. If the game changes its save format, retain the pre-update archive separately. Test the restore process with a disposable profile when the game provides an import screen; a backup that has never been opened is an assumption, not a verified recovery.
