Close the game first, copy the complete folder to a dated location outside the game installation (a USB drive works), and leave the original backup untouched. If an update causes missing or damaged progress, close the game, temporarily turn off Steam Cloud for Hellraiser: Revival, restore that copied folder, launch once offline to check the save, and only then turn cloud synchronization on again.
Steam lists Steam Cloud for Hellraiser: Revival, but cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a rollback copy: it can synchronize a bad post-update state and overwrite the local files you are trying to restore. The Windows save location below comes from community documentation and can change with a future build, so verify the folder after major updates. Console-specific export and import menus are not documented in the official material reviewed; console owners should use their platform’s own saved-data controls and confirm the copy before updating.

Why a separate save backup matters before a patch
A game update normally leaves your progress intact, but a save can become unusable when a patch changes progression logic, fails during a write, or exposes a bug that appears only when an older checkpoint is reloaded. A manual copy gives you a known point to return to. It is different from Steam Cloud: the cloud service is designed to synchronize files between installations, not to preserve a series of dated rollback points.
Saber Interactive’s Update 1.1 notes document progression and save/reload fixes. One example involved a flooded-room lever that could fail to spawn after the player saved and reloaded during the corpse puzzle. Those fixes make updating worthwhile, but they also illustrate why keeping the pre-update files is prudent: if your existing run behaves differently after the patch, you can test the updated build without sacrificing the earlier state.

The same Update 1.1 notes say the game added a startup notice when the GPU driver is out of date and needs updating. That notice is separate from save protection, but updating the driver and the game in a controlled order can make troubleshooting easier: preserve the save first, then apply the game update and any driver change.
Windows and Steam requirements to check first
| Item | Confirmed detail | Why it matters for a backup |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, version 22H2 or later (Valve/Steam listing, 2026) | The documented save path applies to the Windows release. An older 32-bit or unsupported Windows installation may not match this layout. |
| Free storage for the game | 80 GB available storage (Valve/Steam listing, 2026) | Leave enough room for the update as well as the existing installation. A backup on another drive avoids consuming the game drive’s remaining space. |
| Cloud feature | Steam Cloud is listed for Hellraiser: Revival (Steam listing accessed October 19, 2026) | Cloud synchronization must be paused during a manual restore so it does not replace the restored files. |
| Local save location | %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames |
Community documentation reports this location; treat it as version-sensitive because it is not published in the official FAQ. |
The 80 GB figure is the available-storage requirement shown by Valve/Steam, not the size of your save folder. Save data is normally much smaller, but the backup destination still needs enough room for the complete folder and any additional dated copies you keep.
Find the Hellraiser: Revival save folder
- Exit Hellraiser: Revival completely. Do not copy files while the game is saving or while Steam is still closing it.
- Open File Explorer and click the address bar.
- Paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGamesand press Enter. - Confirm that the folder opens and contains the game’s save data. Do not modify individual files; copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder.
The same community documentation places settings under %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedConfigWindows. That is a configuration directory, not the save directory. Include it only if you deliberately want to preserve graphics or control settings; the progress backup itself is the SaveGames folder.
If the path does not open, check that the game has been launched at least once under the Windows account you are using, then close it and try again. A future build can change the directory name or layout. Do not create an empty replacement folder and assume it is a valid backup; first locate the folder that the game actually populated.

Make a dated backup before installing the update
- Close the game and Steam write activity. Quit to the desktop, wait for any save or synchronization activity to finish, and then open the save path in File Explorer.
- Copy the whole folder. Select
SaveGames, choose Copy, and paste it into a location outside the game installation. A dated folder such asHellraiser-save-before-update-2026-10-19makes the rollback point identifiable. - Use a separate physical or logical destination. A 64 GB USB flash drive is a simple offline option identified in the community guidance. Another internal drive is also safer than leaving the only copy beside the live files, because an uninstall or repair operation could affect both.
- Verify the copy. Open the pasted folder, confirm that its contents are present, and check that its size is not zero bytes. Keep the original folder in place; the backup is a duplicate, not a move.
- Record the timing. Note the date, game version shown in Steam, and the last checkpoint you expect to load. This makes it easier to distinguish a pre-update save from one created after the patch.
Do not edit, rename, or “clean up” the dated copy while testing the update. If you need to make another backup later, create a second dated folder rather than replacing the first one.
Install the update and validate the save
- Start the Hellraiser: Revival update after the dated copy has been verified.
- Launch the game normally and load a known-good checkpoint from the backed-up run.
- Play long enough to move, interact with an object, and reach a safe point where the game can save. A menu-only launch does not prove that writing still works.
- Exit normally, start the game again, and confirm that the new save reloads. This second launch checks both the update and the save/reload path.
- Keep the dated backup until you have completed these checks and are satisfied that the updated game is saving correctly. Do not delete it immediately after the first successful launch.
If the game displays the Update 1.1 notice about an out-of-date GPU driver, treat that as a driver-maintenance warning rather than evidence that your save is damaged. Preserve the backup, update the driver through your normal trusted process if needed, and test the game again.
Restore a pre-update save when progress is missing or corrupted
Restoration must happen with the game closed and Steam Cloud temporarily prevented from synchronizing the bad state. The exact wording of Steam’s controls can change, but the sequence is the important part.
- Exit Hellraiser: Revival. Close the game and wait until it is no longer running.
- Temporarily disable Steam Cloud for this game. In Steam, open the game’s properties and the general settings where the per-game Steam Cloud option is shown, then turn synchronization off. If Steam presents a cloud-conflict prompt, do not choose the newer cloud copy while you are trying to restore the older local backup.
- Preserve the failed files. In
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSaved, rename the currentSaveGamesfolder to something such asSaveGames-after-update. Renaming keeps the post-update files available for later diagnosis instead of deleting them. - Put the backup in place. Copy the dated
SaveGamesfolder into%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSaved, so the active path is again%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames. - Launch once without synchronization. Start Steam in offline mode, or otherwise prevent a cloud download during this first verification launch. Load the restored checkpoint and confirm that the expected progress, inventory, and location are present.
- Make a test save. Move to a safe point, save, exit, and reload once more while cloud synchronization is still off. This confirms that the restored files are writable under the updated build.
- Re-enable Steam Cloud only after local verification. Turn the per-game cloud option back on and watch for a conflict dialog. Select the local, verified files if Steam asks which version to keep. If no choice is offered and the cloud immediately replaces the restored progress, disable it again and repeat the local verification before trying to synchronize.
Keep both the original dated backup and the renamed SaveGames-after-update folder until the restored run has remained stable. Once you have a confirmed working state, make a new dated copy so you have a rollback point that includes the repaired or updated run.

How Steam Cloud interacts with a manual restore
Steam Cloud is useful when moving between computers, but it follows synchronization rules rather than your personal notion of “known good.” If the cloud contains the post-update files, leaving synchronization enabled can download them over the local copy you just restored. That is why the restore procedure pauses cloud activity before replacing the folder.
| Situation | Safer choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are about to install an update | Make a dated local copy first; leave Steam Cloud enabled for normal play if desired | The local copy creates a rollback point that cloud history may not retain. |
| The updated game shows missing progress | Disable the game’s Steam Cloud option before replacing files | Prevents the current cloud state from overwriting the backup during restoration. |
| Steam asks which files to use after restoration | Choose the verified local files, not the newer cloud files | The local copy is the version you checked offline. |
| The restored run works and saves normally | Re-enable Steam Cloud and monitor the first synchronization | Cloud can resume convenience after the local state is proven. |
Do not assume that a cloud conflict prompt always means the cloud copy is newer in a useful sense. “Newer” can simply mean it was written after the update. Your dated local backup is the reference point because you chose and verified it before the change.
Manual copy versus cloud synchronization
| Backup method | Rollback control | Platform coverage in the documented material | Verification | Where it is stored |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Dated manual copy of SaveGames |
High: you select the exact pre-update state | Windows/Steam procedure | Open the copied folder and test it offline during restoration | Separate folder, USB drive, or another drive you control |
| Steam Cloud | Limited: synchronization can propagate an unwanted state | Steam listing confirms availability for Hellraiser: Revival | Usually verified only after download or a conflict prompt | Steam’s cloud service, outside your local folder |
| Platform saved-data tools on console | Depends on the platform’s export and cloud controls | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 are official platforms; game-specific menus are not documented | Use the console’s own confirmation and restore checks | Platform-managed storage or cloud |
The practical choice is not either/or. A local copy supplies deliberate rollback control; Steam Cloud supplies convenience after you have a verified working state.
Console guidance: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2
The official Hellraiser: Revival FAQ confirms releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. The official pages reviewed do not document Hellraiser-specific export, import, USB, or cloud-restore steps for those consoles. Because menu names and subscription requirements can differ by platform and region, do not apply the Windows path to a console.

- Backward compatible with USB 2.0
- Secure file encryption and password protection(2)
Before a console update, use the platform’s own saved-data or cloud-management screen to create or verify a copy, then confirm that the backup is visible before starting the game update. If the platform offers both local and cloud data, note which timestamp belongs to the pre-update run. During a restore, follow the platform’s confirmation prompts and verify the game offline or with synchronization paused when the platform allows it. These are general platform safeguards, not documented Hellraiser: Revival procedures.

The SaveGames path is missing
Launch the game once, exit completely, and check the path again under the same Windows account. If the folder still does not appear, the current build may use a different layout. Search within %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSaved for a folder named SaveGames, and avoid copying settings folders as a substitute. The community path is version-sensitive and is not an official FAQ entry.
The backup folder is empty or incomplete
Delete nothing from the original. Re-close the game, wait for Steam activity to stop, and copy the entire folder again. Verify the destination opens and contains data before updating. If the USB drive reports an error, use another destination; an unverified copy is not a rollback plan.

Steam restores the bad cloud state immediately
Disable Steam Cloud for Hellraiser: Revival, close Steam if necessary, and repeat the restore with the game offline. Keep the post-update folder renamed rather than deleted. After the restored run saves and reloads successfully, re-enable cloud and choose the verified local files if Steam asks.

The restored save loads but fails during play
Exit and test the backup again while cloud synchronization remains off. If the same checkpoint fails, try another dated copy if you made one. Update 1.1 addressed specific progression and reload defects, including the flooded-room lever issue, so confirm that the game is actually running the intended updated build before concluding that the backup itself is damaged.
You updated before making a backup
Do not overwrite the current files while experimenting. Copy the current SaveGames folder to a dated emergency folder first. Then test whether Steam Cloud offers an older version, recognizing that cloud history and recovery options are controlled by Steam and may not provide a pre-update state.
A repeatable pre-update checklist
- Confirm the game is closed and no save or synchronization activity is running.
- Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGamesin File Explorer. - Copy the complete folder to a dated location outside the installation.
- Open the copied folder and verify that it contains data.
- Check that the update has enough free storage; Valve/Steam lists 80 GB available storage for the Windows release.
- Install the update and load a known-good checkpoint.
- Play briefly, save, exit, and reload.
- Keep the dated copy until the updated run is stable.
This process gives you an independently verifiable local rollback point while retaining Steam Cloud as an optional convenience after the update has been proven.
