How to Back Up and Restore Google Messages When Changing Phones

Back up messages before switching Android phones, then restore during setup or transfer directly from the old device. Learn the version limits, RCS caveats, and checks to make before erasing your old phone.

To move Google Messages to a new Android phone, back up the old phone in Android Settings and restore that backup during the new phone’s setup—or copy data directly from the old phone using the setup prompts. Installing Google Messages or signing in to the app alone does not restore message history. Keep the old phone until you have checked your conversations on the new one.

Choose how to transfer your messages

Consideration Google Account backup and restore Direct transfer
Old phone needed during transfer Not necessarily, if a usable backup exists Yes; keep both phones available
Connection Google Account and network access during setup or restore Cable or Wi-Fi, according to Google
When to start Best during initial setup or after a factory reset Follow the new phone’s setup prompts
Android version A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older one An older destination version may result in an incomplete transfer
Physical accessory None inherently required A compatible cable is optional; Wi-Fi is also supported

Google describes both options: restore from a cloud backup or transfer data between devices over cable or Wi-Fi. Setup screens and menu names vary by phone. Google’s Android backup and transfer guidance and phone setup instructions explain the available flows.

Back up the old Android phone

  1. Charge and unlock the old phone. Make sure you can access the Google Account you intend to use on the new phone.
  2. Open Settings, then find Google or Google services and open Backup. The exact labels and path depend on the Android version and manufacturer.
  3. Turn on backup if it is off. Open the backup details and check that messages are among the data types included.
  4. Tap Back up now and wait for the backup to finish before starting the switch.

Google lists SMS and MMS in Android device backup, and separately lists RCS messages when you use Google Messages. This describes Google’s stated backup coverage; it is not a guarantee that every phone, app, or message will transfer identically. Google recommends using a PIN, pattern, or password as the screen lock to help protect backed-up data. See Google’s backup instructions.

Restore from a Google Account backup

  1. Start setting up the new Android phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
  2. Sign in with the same Google Account used for the old phone’s backup.
  3. When prompted, choose the relevant backup and select the data to restore.
  4. Leave the phone connected while setup and restoration continue, then check Google Messages for your conversations.

Google’s main restore flow is during initial setup or when setting up a reset phone. Google also notes that previously backed-up data may be added when you add the account to a phone that is already set up, but the full restore is best handled during setup. The process can take up to 24 hours, so messages missing immediately after setup may still be restoring. Google’s restore guidance covers the process.

Google’s community guidance says a Google backup restores a whole backup rather than offering a text-only restore choice. This is distinct from direct device transfer, and manufacturer-specific transfer options may differ. Google Messages Community guidance discusses this limitation.

Transfer directly from the old phone

  1. Turn on the new phone and follow its setup prompts until asked whether to copy data from another device.
  2. Choose the Android-device transfer option, then follow the pairing and data-selection prompts on both phones.
  3. Use either Wi-Fi or a compatible cable, as offered by setup. Keep both phones connected until the transfer and setup finish.
  4. Open Google Messages on the new phone and verify the conversations you need before erasing or handing over the old phone.

A cable is optional, not a Google requirement. If you choose the wired path, check both phones’ ports and whether you already have a suitable cable before buying one. Google says some backup or transfer features require Android 9 or later; available steps may vary by device. Android setup instructions describe copying data from an old phone.

Compatibility and account restrictions

Android version differences

A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older version. Google also warns that transferring to a lower-version device can leave the transfer incomplete. If possible, update the new phone and use the same or a later Android version than the old phone before transferring. Google’s version-compatibility guidance explains this restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work-managed phones

Backup may not be available when setting up a personal phone with a work profile, a work-only phone, or a company-owned device. An organization can also block backup of work data. If the backup option is missing, check with the device administrator and consult Google’s backup information.

RCS, SMS, MMS, and changing messaging apps

RCS is a messaging mode distinct from SMS and MMS. Google lists RCS message backup when Google Messages is used, while RCS features and service depend on your provider and settings. Google says end-to-end encryption applies to eligible RCS conversations; it is not available for SMS or MMS. Details are in Google’s RCS information and RCS encryption guidance.

Moving a SIM card does not itself transfer message history. Google notes that after SIM removal, RCS chats may continue working for about eight days. If messages stop arriving after you change messaging apps, check the RCS settings and use Google’s RCS troubleshooting steps.

If messages are missing after the switch

  • Give restoration time: Google says the process can take up to 24 hours. Keep the phone connected and check again before assuming the messages are gone.
  • Check the account and backup: Confirm that you signed into the same Google Account used for backup and that the old phone’s backup details included messages.
  • Check Android versions: A newer-version backup cannot be restored to an older-version phone. Update the destination device if possible.
  • Check RCS separately: If the issue is that new messages are not arriving after a SIM or app change, review RCS settings and Google’s troubleshooting guidance.
  • Do not erase the old phone yet: Verify conversations on the new phone before wiping, trading in, or giving away the old device.

If no backup was enabled and the old phone is no longer available, a Google Messages Community Manager says the messages are likely unretrievable. The community guidance does not promise recovery in that situation.
