Signal is the strongest general-purpose alternative if the people you text will use it: Signal says all conversations are end-to-end encrypted by default, and its optional usernames let you start chats without sharing your phone number. WhatsApp is often more practical when your contacts already use it; its personal messages are end-to-end encrypted. Neither app changes the fact that ordinary SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted.
The right choice depends on who will install the same app, what identifier you must share, and how you will keep or move your message history. Google Messages can still encrypt compatible RCS chats, but that protection is conditional rather than universal.

Which Google Messages alternative should you choose?
| App or option | When message encryption applies | Practical fit | Identifier and history considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signal | Signal says conversations are always end-to-end encrypted. Safety numbers are available to check the other party. | Best fit when both people are willing to use Signal and private conversation is the priority. | A phone number is required to register. A username can let you start a chat without sharing your number; changing a setting is required to hide discoverability by number. Optional encrypted backups and device-transfer paths have platform-specific limits. |
| WhatsApp says personal messages are end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol. | Convenient when the people you contact already use WhatsApp. | Its encryption claim for personal messages should not be taken as a claim that all service metadata or every feature has identical privacy properties. Its own explanation discusses business messaging, Channels and Meta AI. | |
| Google Messages with RCS | End-to-end encryption applies to compatible RCS chats when everyone uses Google Messages with RCS enabled. SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. | Useful for broad texting reach, particularly where contacts do not want to switch apps, but encryption depends on the conversation being a compatible RCS chat. | Google says received encrypted messages can be included in Android backups and may be accessible to apps with SMS or notification permissions. |
| Cross-platform encrypted RCS | Apple and Google announced a beta rollout for supported iPhones running iOS 26.5, supported carriers, and Android users on the latest Google Messages. | Potentially useful for Android-to-iPhone conversations where the devices, carrier and chat support the feature. | Do not assume a particular conversation is encrypted RCS just because it is between Android and iPhone; confirm live support on the devices and in the chat. |
The comparison is about practical encryption coverage and switching friction, not a comprehensive security audit or a ranking of every messaging service.
How private is Google Messages?
Google Messages is not uniformly encrypted across every way it sends a text. Google says end-to-end encryption is available in compatible RCS chats when all participants use Google Messages and have RCS enabled. If the conversation falls back to SMS or MMS, its messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Check the conversation’s encryption status rather than treating the app name or the presence of an RCS setting as proof that a specific message is protected. Google’s explanation of end-to-end encryption in Google Messages describes the compatibility requirement.

Encryption of a conversation also does not settle every question about copies of messages or app access. Google notes that received encrypted messages may be included in Android backups, and apps granted SMS or notification permissions may be able to access message information. Review the relevant Google Messages privacy information when deciding which apps and backups to trust.
Why choose Signal?
Encryption is the default
Signal says conversations are always end-to-end encrypted, and it provides safety numbers that participants can compare to verify they are communicating with the intended person. This avoids the compatible-RCS-versus-SMS distinction that can arise in Google Messages. Signal’s description of its encryption and safety numbers is the relevant starting point for understanding that protection.
A username can reduce number sharing, but does not remove the registration requirement
Signal requires a phone number to register. After registration, you can use a username to begin a chat without giving the other person your phone number. If you also want to prevent people from finding you through your number, you must change the number-discovery setting. Signal explains these distinctions in its phone number privacy and usernames guidance. A username therefore helps limit what you share with a conversation partner; it does not make Signal an anonymous service.

Plan how to preserve your history
Switching apps does not automatically move your Google Messages history into Signal. Signal documents optional encrypted backups and device-transfer routes, with platform-specific limitations. Before changing phones or relying on a backup, check Signal’s current backup and restore instructions and make sure you understand the available route for your devices. A backup helps with continuity, but it is a separate consideration from whether a live conversation is end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp is a practical alternative when your existing contacts already use it: a privacy feature is only useful for a conversation if both people use the service. WhatsApp says personal messages are end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol. Its privacy explanation also discusses business messaging, Channels and Meta AI, so do not extend the personal-message encryption statement into a blanket claim about every interaction, feature or piece of service metadata.
If your contacts are split between WhatsApp and Signal, the deciding question is not which app has the most appealing label. It is which one the people you need to reach will consistently use for the conversations you want protected.

Can Android users text iPhone users privately?
There are two distinct routes, and they have different requirements:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Use the same messaging app. A Signal conversation can be end-to-end encrypted when both people use Signal. WhatsApp likewise protects personal messages between its users with end-to-end encryption.
- Use cross-platform RCS where supported. In May 2026, Apple and Google announced a beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS for supported iPhones running iOS 26.5, supported carriers, and Android users on the latest Google Messages. That is conditional support, not a guarantee for every Android-to-iPhone text. Check whether the specific devices, carrier and conversation support encrypted RCS. Google’s announcement of the RCS beta rollout describes the stated requirements.
When the cross-platform conversation is not a supported encrypted RCS chat, do not assume the fallback SMS or MMS is end-to-end encrypted.
Quick Recap
What to check before switching
- Check who will adopt the app. Ask the people you want to reach whether they will use Signal or WhatsApp. If they will not, the practical benefit of switching may be limited.
- Check encryption in the conversation, not just the app. In Google Messages, confirm that the chat is compatible RCS with RCS enabled for everyone. For Android-to-iPhone RCS, verify support on the actual devices, carrier and chat.
- Decide what identifier you are comfortable sharing. Signal registration requires a phone number; a username can avoid sharing that number with a chat partner, while a separate setting controls discovery by number.
- Make a history plan before deleting or changing devices. Review Signal’s supported backup or transfer option for your platform before relying on it to preserve messages.
