How to Set the Correct MIME Type and Cache Headers for SVG Backgrounds

Use Content-Type: image/svg+xml for SVG backgrounds, then choose a cache lifetime that matches your asset URL and deployment strategy.

Serve SVG files with Content-Type: image/svg+xml. Set Cache-Control to suit how you update the asset: use a longer freshness lifetime when each content change gets a new URL, or a shorter lifetime or revalidation strategy when the URL stays the same. There is no single cache duration that is correct for every SVG background.

Set the MIME type on the SVG response

The registered media type for SVG is image/svg+xml. The file extension alone does not determine how a browser processes a response; the server or serving layer must return the correct Content-Type header. The W3C SVG 2 media-type registration identifies .svg as the normal extension and also describes .svgz as gzip-compressed SVG bytes.

For a CSS background, the stylesheet references the SVG URL, but the MIME type belongs on the response for that SVG URL—not on the CSS file. SVG is supported in CSS background-image; image-context restrictions can prevent scripts and external resources from loading in some browsers. See MDN’s overview of web image types and its CSS background-image reference.

Choose cache headers to match how you deploy

Cache-Control: max-age=N sets a freshness lifetime of N seconds. A cache may reuse a response while it is fresh; after its age exceeds that lifetime, it is stale and may need validation or replacement. HTTP can heuristically cache some responses even when Cache-Control is absent, so an explicit policy makes behavior more predictable. MDN explains these freshness rules in its Cache-Control reference.

Deployment approach Cache policy direction Trade-off
Change the URL whenever the SVG contents change A longer freshness lifetime may fit, because a changed URL identifies the updated resource to caches. Old URLs may remain cached, but pages that reference the new URL can request the new asset.
Keep the same URL while replacing the SVG contents Use a shorter freshness lifetime or a revalidation/invalidation process aligned with your release needs. A fresh cached response can continue to show the previous graphic until it expires or is refreshed.

These are deployment strategies, not SVG-specific mandates. Select the lifetime based on how quickly a changed background must appear, how often you release asset changes, and whether you can reliably invalidate caches. The HTTP specifications and references do not prescribe one universal max-age for SVG backgrounds.

Using Expires as well

If a response includes both Cache-Control: max-age and Expires, max-age takes precedence. max-age is an elapsed duration in seconds; Expires is an absolute date. See MDN’s Expires reference.

Check the response when a background is missing or stale

  1. Request the SVG URL directly and inspect its status, Content-Type, and Cache-Control response headers. Confirm that the type is image/svg+xml.
  2. Check that the CSS background-image URL points to the intended deployed SVG.
  3. If the origin response and public response differ, inspect your CDN or reverse-proxy cache rules and its purge or invalidation behavior. Managed caches can apply service-specific settings or headers, so the origin response may not describe the entire path. Consult your provider’s documentation; MDN’s HTTP caching guide covers caching concepts.
  4. After changing a header or cache rule, request the asset again and distinguish browser-cache behavior from shared-cache behavior.

The troubleshooting steps apply whether the SVG is served directly or through a managed cache; the exact controls depend on the hosting and cache services in use.
