How to Back Up and Reinstall PC Games You Bought Digitally

The safe method is a two-part backup: preserve the game installation files and separately copy every save, configuration, mod, screenshot, and custom-content folder you care about. Launcher backups are not complete archives by default. Before erasing Windows, restore one game from your external drive, launch it, and load a known save. Keep the old drive untouched until that test succeeds.

What a complete game backup must contain

A digital game is usually spread across several types of data. The launcher knows about the installed program, but your progress and customizations may live elsewhere. Treat these as separate items when planning the backup.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Data What it contains How to protect it
Installation files The executable, assets, patches, and files downloaded by the store client. Use the store’s backup/export feature where available, or preserve the library folder and let the launcher verify it after reinstalling.
Saved games Campaign progress, profiles, settings stored as saves, and sometimes achievement or statistics data. Copy the game’s save folders separately. Do not assume a launcher archive includes them.
Configuration Graphics settings, key bindings, controller profiles, and local preferences. Copy configuration folders and files in addition to the installation.
Mods and custom content Mod managers, downloaded modifications, custom maps, shaders, presets, and user-created files. Copy the mod folders and any mod-manager database or profile directory.
Screenshots and captures Images and videos saved outside the main game directory. Back up those folders independently if they matter to you.

Valve explicitly says that Steam backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files unless those folders are copied separately. The same principle is useful for every store: an installation backup is not automatically a personal-data backup.

Prepare before reinstalling Windows

Do the preparation while the current installation still boots and your games still launch. A few minutes spent identifying accounts and folders prevents a clean Windows install from becoming a full redownload and lost-save recovery project.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Record the accounts and libraries you will need

  • Write down which store owns each game and confirm that you can sign in to the same account after the reinstall.
  • Save the email address, password, two-factor authentication method, and recovery codes for each account in a secure location.
  • Note every game-library drive and folder. A library on a second internal drive may survive the Windows reinstall, but do not rely on that drive as your only copy.
  • Record the launcher settings that control cloud saves, automatic updates, and download locations.
  • Export or copy profiles from any mod manager you use, including load orders and downloaded archives.

Choose and test external storage

An external USB hard drive or external SSD is a practical destination for game installers, copied save folders, and offline installers. Use a drive with enough free space for the largest library you intend to preserve, then open the copied folders and a few archive files to confirm that the transfer completed. Valve recommends testing Steam backups; a backup that cannot be read is not protection against a failed system drive.

Keep the external drive disconnected from the computer while you install Windows, then reconnect it only after the new system and security updates are ready. If the data is irreplaceable, keep a second copy on another physical drive or an independent cloud-backup service. Launcher synchronization is not a substitute for an archive you control.

Find saves, settings, and custom files

Save locations are selected by the game, not by the store. Two games from the same launcher can use completely different folders, and some games keep more than one file in more than one location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the game’s own documentation first

Check the game’s support page, readme, or in-game settings for a documented save path. If the game has a profile or cloud-synchronization option, note whether it covers only saves or also settings and other user data. Copy the complete folder rather than a single file when the contents are unclear; retaining timestamps and neighboring files makes recovery safer.

Check common Windows locations

When a documented path is unavailable, inspect the common user-data locations with File Explorer. Typical locations include %USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games, %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%, and a game’s folder under %USERPROFILE%Saved Games. These are conventions, not guarantees. Search for the game’s title, publisher name, or a recently modified file while the game is closed, and include hidden folders in the search.

Some titles store saves beside the executable, inside a launcher-specific user-data folder, or in a directory chosen during first launch. Copy both the apparent save directory and any adjacent configuration directory until you have verified which files the game actually reads.

Capture mods and custom content separately

Mods may be installed in the game directory, a user profile, a workshop cache, or a separate mod-manager directory. Copy the mod manager’s profiles and load order, then copy downloaded mod archives if you do not want to fetch them again. Custom multiplayer maps and manually installed add-ons are especially easy to miss because they may not be part of the launcher’s backup set.

Back up Steam games with Steam’s tool

Steam’s Backup and Restore feature is designed for games that download, install, and patch completely through Steam. Valve states: “Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool.” Valve also warns that “Many games that use third party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam’s backup feature.” Treat those statements as compatibility requirements, not minor exceptions.

Create a local Steam backup

  1. Connect the external USB hard drive or SSD and make sure it has enough free space.
  2. Open Steam, select Steam in the upper-left menu, and choose Backup and Restore Games.
  3. Select Backup currently installed programs, then choose the games to include.
  4. Choose the external destination and, if Steam offers archive-size choices, select a size that fits the available storage and the way you plan to copy the files.
  5. Start the backup and wait for Steam to report completion. Do not disconnect the drive or shut down the computer during the operation.
  6. Open the destination afterward and check that Steam created the backup files. Copy the separately collected saves, settings, mods, and screenshots to a clearly named folder on the same drive.

The Steam archive is useful for compatible installations, but it is not a universal image of a game. Third-party installers and downloaders can make a title incompatible, and the archive may omit personal files even when the game itself is included.

Test the Steam archive before wiping the old system

If you have another working Windows installation or a spare drive, install Steam there and use Steam > Backup and Restore Games > Restore a previous backup. Restore one representative title, launch it, and confirm that the game reaches its main menu. Then put the separately copied save folder in place and load a known save. If the archive does not restore cleanly, keep the original installation and use it to identify what is missing before deleting anything.

When a Steam game is not compatible with Backup and Restore

For a title that uses an external installer, downloader, launcher, or unusual patching system, preserve the installed game directory and all associated user-data folders as a fallback. After reinstalling Steam, start an installation to the same library location and use the client’s file-verification or discovery options where available. The exact result depends on the title, so keep the original files until the launcher finishes checking them and the game launches.

Understand Steam Cloud correctly

Steam Cloud is synchronization for supported files, not a guaranteed historical archive. Valve describes it as a service that lets games and the Steam platform use cloud storage hosted by Steam; supported data can include settings, saves, profile statistics, and other user data. Support is decided by the game and its configured file list.

Cloud synchronization can produce a conflict when the local and cloud copies differ. Valve warns that lost data may not be recoverable. Before reinstalling, let the game close normally, wait for Steam to finish synchronizing, and keep a manual copy of the save folder anyway. If Steam presents a conflict after the reinstall, stop and inspect the dates and contents of both copies rather than choosing randomly. Preserve both versions before selecting one.

Do not switch Steam Cloud off during migration unless you have a specific reason and a manual copy. A local save created while synchronization is disabled can later conflict with the cloud copy when synchronization is re-enabled.

Back up and restore Epic Games Launcher titles

Epic Games Launcher has Cloud Saves for supported games, but the setting must remain consistent during a migration. Epic warns that disabling and enabling Cloud Saves can result in conflicts. Turn the feature on before the old installation is removed, allow the launcher to finish synchronizing, and still copy saves manually.

Preserve an existing Epic installation

  1. Copy the existing Epic game directory to the external drive. Also copy the game’s separate save, configuration, mod, and screenshot folders.
  2. After reinstalling Windows, install the Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the same account.
  3. Start installing the game and choose the location where you want the restored files to live.
  4. When the new download has created its target directory, pause or stop the download and close the launcher completely.
  5. Copy the preserved game files into that target directory, allowing the copied files to replace the partial files when prompted.
  6. Reopen the launcher and resume the installation. Epic says the launcher will verify the existing files and download only what is missing or damaged.
  7. Wait for verification to finish, launch the game, and test the restored save before removing the external copy.

Epic’s support guidance is explicit that, after the launcher or Windows is reinstalled, it has no feature that automatically detects previously installed game files. The files must be placed in the directory where a new installation is started so the launcher can verify or complete the installation.

How other digital stores fit the same plan

Stores differ in their menus and file layouts, but the backup questions are consistent. Before relying on a launcher, check each item below for the specific title and edition you own.

Question What to establish Why it matters
Official backup or export Does the launcher create a restorable archive, and which games are compatible? An archive may exclude titles that use third-party installers or downloaders.
Cloud-save scope Is cloud saving enabled per game, and which files are synchronized? Cloud may cover saves but omit settings, mods, or custom content.
Offline installers Can you download a complete installer that does not require the launcher? An offline installer can reduce dependence on a working account or a future launcher version.
Existing-file verification Can the launcher scan a folder and download only missing files? Verification can avoid a full redownload when an intact library copy exists.
Save and configuration paths Where does the game store progress and preferences? Those folders often sit outside the installation directory.
Pre-delete testing Can you launch from the restored copy and load a known save? A successful test is the evidence that the backup is usable.

If a store does not document one of these capabilities, assume the installation and personal-data backups are separate and keep the old copy until you have completed a real restore test.

Reinstall Windows without losing your library

  1. Finish the pre-wipe checklist: account credentials, two-factor recovery, library locations, save folders, configuration, mods, screenshots, and backup archives.
  2. Disconnect the external backup drive and any secondary drive that is not required for the Windows installation. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong disk.
  3. Install Windows, apply updates, install current device drivers, and confirm that the destination game drive is visible with the intended drive letter.
  4. Reconnect the backup drive and copy the manual save and configuration folders to a temporary recovery directory on the new system. Do not overwrite newly created folders yet.
  5. Install the relevant launcher, sign in to the original account, and configure the library location before starting downloads.
  6. Restore Steam-compatible archives through Steam’s Backup and Restore tool, or use the Epic verification process for an existing Epic installation.
  7. Launch each restored game once so it creates its normal user-data directories, then close it.
  8. Replace the newly created save and configuration folders with your preserved copies, keeping a backup of the new empty folders until the game loads correctly.
  9. Start the game, load a known save, check settings and controller bindings, and verify that mods or custom maps appear as expected.
  10. Only after every important title passes this check should you erase the old installation or reformat the old drive.

Restore saves without creating a conflict

Cloud synchronization and manual copying can both create files for the same game. Restore in a controlled order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install and start the game once, then exit normally. This creates the correct folder structure and confirms that the installation works.
  2. Make a copy of the newly created user-data folder before replacing anything.
  3. Temporarily pause cloud synchronization if the launcher permits it and you are restoring a known-good local save. This prevents an empty new profile from replacing the older save while you copy files.
  4. Copy the preserved save files into the newly created folder, retaining the original folder structure.
  5. Start the game offline or with synchronization paused and load the save.
  6. After confirming the correct progress, re-enable synchronization and resolve any prompt by preserving both versions first. Choose the copy whose progress and timestamps match the save you just verified.

If a game stores saves in more than one location, restoring only one folder can produce an apparently new profile or missing settings. Compare the old and new directory trees and copy the complete set of related files.

Testing checklist before deleting the old copy

  • The launcher accepts your original account credentials and any required two-factor challenge.
  • The restored game reaches its main menu without reporting missing or corrupt files.
  • A known campaign or profile save loads with the expected progress, characters, inventory, and settings.
  • Graphics, key bindings, controller mappings, and resolution are restored or can be recreated.
  • Mods, custom maps, and add-ons that you intentionally kept are present and enabled.
  • Cloud status shows a completed synchronization after the verified local save is loaded.
  • You can close and reopen the game and still see the same save.
  • The external drive contains the archive, manual data copy, and a readable folder listing.

Common failures and fixes

The launcher says the game is installed, but the save is missing

The installation and save are separate. Close the game, locate the preserved save folder, and compare it with the newly created user-data folder. Restore the save files manually, then test with synchronization paused so an empty cloud profile cannot overwrite them.

Steam Backup and Restore refuses a title

The game may use a third-party installer or downloader, or may not completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Preserve the installation and personal-data folders manually, then use the launcher’s own verification or repair process after reinstalling.

Steam reports a cloud conflict

Do not select a version before making copies of both local and cloud files. Compare timestamps and in-game progress, load the version you intend to keep, and allow synchronization only after that local test succeeds. Valve cautions that lost cloud data may not be recoverable.

Epic starts downloading the entire game again

Epic does not automatically discover old game files after the launcher or Windows is reinstalled. Start a new installation to the desired directory, close the launcher, copy the preserved files into that directory, and resume so Epic can verify what is already present.

The restored game starts with default settings

Settings are often outside the installation directory and may not be covered by cloud saves. Copy the configuration folder separately, then recheck display mode, key bindings, controller profiles, and mod paths.

A modded game crashes after restoration

First test the unmodded installation. Then restore mods in small groups, matching the original load order and mod-manager profile. A missing dependency or incompatible version can look like a damaged game archive.

When a full redownload is the better choice

Restoring files saves bandwidth only when the files are complete and readable. Choose a clean download when the old installation contains unexplained errors, malware concerns, a broken mod stack, or files from a different game edition. Even then, keep the manual save and configuration backup. A fresh installation can be paired with a known-good save without carrying forward damaged program files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule

Use the launcher’s backup or verification feature for installation files, but always create a second manual backup of saves and personal data. Steam’s tool has documented compatibility limits; Steam Cloud and Epic Cloud Saves synchronize supported data but can conflict; and Epic requires you to seed a new installation with old files because it does not automatically discover them. The only reliable point to erase the old copy is after a restored launch and a successful save-load test.
