Back up a digital game while it is still downloadable, but treat the copy as game data—not as a replacement for your store account, license, DRM authorization, launcher, or online servers. The safest approach is to preserve the installer or platform backup, copy saves and custom files separately, record proof of purchase and recovery details, and test a restore before deleting the original installation.
Steam, GOG, PlayStation, and Nintendo handle ownership differently. The steps below show what each platform can preserve, what it still needs to authorize play, and how to recover a library that appears to have disappeared.

What a digital-game backup actually preserves
A backup protects files that are stored on your drive: the game executable, downloaded assets, patches, installers, save data, settings, maps, mods, screenshots, or other user-created content that you deliberately copy. It does not transfer ownership to another account or create a new license.
When you restore, the platform may still require all of the following:

- The account that originally purchased or activated the game.
- A valid license or subscription entitlement.
- A launcher or client that performs an authorization check.
- Third-party DRM that remains operational.
- Working online services if the title requires a server connection.
A local copy therefore cannot recreate a deleted account, bypass DRM, or revive a game whose required online service has shut down. It can save you from downloading many gigabytes again and can preserve files that a store might no longer offer.
Keep at least one copy on an external USB SSD or hard drive, and another copy in a separate location. Choose capacity from the size of the library you intend to preserve; no drive capacity can preserve a license by itself.
Prepare before a game is delisted or your account becomes inaccessible
Map every dependency
For each game, write down the store or launcher, the purchasing account, any third-party DRM, the location of saves and configuration files, and whether multiplayer depends on a publisher-operated server. A game bought through one store may still require a separate account or activation service.

Install and patch the game before a delisting takes effect. If the platform offers an installer or backup package, create it while you can still authenticate. Keep the original purchase receipt, product key where applicable, account email address, and recovery information with your backup notes.
Copy more than the game folder
Save files, configuration files, maps, mods, and other custom content can live outside the installation directory. Make a separate copy of those folders and label the game, platform, account, and date. Cloud-synchronized saves are useful, but do not assume they will remain available after an account problem; retain a local copy as well.
Test before the original disappears
Restore the backup to a spare folder or another computer when practical. Launch the game, load a save, and check any required launcher or DRM sign-in. A test reveals a corrupt or incomplete archive while the original installation is still available for comparison.

Steam: create and restore a platform backup
Steam’s built-in tool is designed for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Steam explicitly warns that many third-party installers or downloaders are incompatible with this tool. If a title uses another installer, preserve that installer and its files separately.

- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose the destination drive and complete the backup process.
Use a destination with enough free space for the complete installation and the backup package. Do not move or delete the original until the backup finishes and you have checked that the files exist on the destination.
Restore the backup
- Install Steam on the computer where you want to restore the game.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Choose Restore Game Backup… in Steam.
- Point Steam to the backup location and follow the prompts.
- After restoration, allow Steam to verify or update the installation, then launch the game and load a save.
The account sign-in remains essential. Restoring files to a computer does not grant an entitlement to an account that never purchased or activated the title.
Back up Steam saves and custom content separately
Steam’s backup package may not include saves, maps, configurations, mods, screenshots, or other files stored outside the Steam-managed installation. Locate those folders for each game and copy them independently. Keep the folder structure and a short note describing where each folder belongs; this makes a later restore possible even if the game’s settings have been reset.
Verify a Steam game that vanished from the library
A previously activated game missing from the library often indicates an account-selection problem rather than a delisting. Before deleting files or buying the game again:
- Sign out and sign back in with each email address or login name you may have used.
- Use Steam’s account lookup and recovery tools.
- Check your purchase history for the title.
- Clear library filters and search the Hidden Games section.
- Confirm that the game was activated on this account rather than received through a different account, gift, or family arrangement.
If the account was hijacked, contact Steam Support and be ready to prove ownership. Gather previous login names, associated email addresses, purchase records, and other information that links you to the account. Support can help recover an account after ownership is verified, but a local game folder cannot replace that process.

Never delete a Steam account to solve an access problem
Deleting the account is irreversible. Steam states: “If you delete your Steam account, game licenses, community profile, gifts, inventory items, wallet funds, and other associated information will be deleted permanently and will not be recoverable.” Use account recovery or Support instead, even if the library currently looks empty.
GOG: keep independent offline installers
GOG provides the most straightforward file-preservation workflow covered here. Its support information says purchased items can be downloaded as many times as you want, without a limit on the number of downloads. The downloads are self-executable installer files, and the Galaxy app is optional: it is not required to install, play, or manage the games.
Build an installer archive
- Sign in to the account that purchased the game and open its library.
- Download every available self-executable installer file for the game.
- Download any separately listed patches, bonus files, or language packages you need.
- Store the files on an external drive and make a second copy in a separate location.
- Record the game version and the account used for the purchase.
Keep all parts of a multi-file installer together. Open the installer on a spare folder or computer to confirm that it starts and that the installed game launches. Offline installers preserve the files, but a title can still depend on online multiplayer services or an external DRM component if one is included.
What the optional Galaxy client changes
Galaxy can manage installations and updates, but it is not a prerequisite for installing or playing the downloadable installers described above. If an account problem prevents the client from signing in, the archived installer remains the practical route for a game that does not require another authorization service.
PlayStation: reinstall through account and license checks
On PlayStation, copying a console folder is not a substitute for the account and license checks that authorize a download or launch. Use the account that bought the game and follow the platform’s licensing sequence.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased the game.
- Review transaction history to confirm the purchase.
- Check whether the game was obtained through a subscription and whether that subscription is still active.
- Use the console’s Restore Licenses function.
- If the installation is damaged, delete the local game data and redownload it from the library.
- Verify the primary-console or Console Sharing settings when another console is expected to use the purchase.
If the title was delisted, the library and transaction record determine whether redownload is still offered for that account. A copied folder may save time in some troubleshooting situations, but the console still has to validate the license and any required online service.

Nintendo: the purchasing account and virtual game cards control access
Nintendo states that purchases on the Switch eShop are tied to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Reinstalling therefore depends on the purchasing account remaining linked and on the console authorized to load that account’s virtual game cards.

- Sign in with the Nintendo Account used for the purchase.
- Confirm that the account is linked to the console you want to use.
- Check which console can load the account’s virtual game cards.
- Use the account’s software library to redownload the title.
- Keep the purchasing account authorized before deleting local data or moving to another console.
Moving files between consoles cannot replace Nintendo Account ownership or console authorization. If the purchasing account is inaccessible, recover that account first; a local copy alone does not establish the entitlement.

Use a storage plan that survives hardware and account failures
Keep two independent copies
Store one archive on an external USB SSD or hard drive and another in a separate physical location. A single drive can fail, be lost, or be encrypted by malware at the same time your original installation is unavailable. Keep the drive disconnected when you are not updating it.
Organize by platform and account
Create folders for each store or console, then subfolders for the account, game title, version, installers or backup packages, saves, and custom content. Include a text file with the purchase date, receipt location, product key if applicable, required launcher, and known server requirements. Clear labels prevent you from restoring a game with the wrong account or mixing save versions.
Refresh the archive after major updates
When a game receives a large patch, create a new dated backup or preserve the previous working version as well. Keep the installer, patch files, and save backup together so you can identify which combinations were tested.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game is delisted, but the account still owns it
Check the platform library and purchase history while signed in to the original account. If a redownload option remains, reinstall through the platform rather than relying only on copied files. If the platform offers no download, use the installer or backup you created earlier, then complete any required account or DRM sign-in.

The copied folder launches a launcher but not the game
Install the required launcher, sign in to the owning account, and let it verify the files. Check for a separate third-party DRM activation. A copied folder contains data, not proof of ownership, so a successful file copy cannot remove those checks.
The game opens, but the save is missing
Restore the separately copied save and configuration folders to the locations used by the game. Check that the restored files belong to the same account and edition. If cloud synchronization is available, allow it to finish only after making a local copy, because an empty or newer cloud state can overwrite older progress.
The library is empty after a sign-in
Try the other email addresses and login names you have used, review purchase history, clear filters, and inspect Hidden Games. If those checks fail, use account recovery or Support and provide ownership evidence. Do not delete the account or create a replacement account expecting the purchases to transfer.

Separate the file question from the service question. Your installer or backup may still install and launch, but a permanently closed authentication, matchmaking, or content server can make online features unusable. Look for an official offline mode or a publisher-supported replacement; do not assume a local copy can restore a server.
The game came from a subscription
Confirm the subscription status before deleting local data. A subscription entitlement can expire even when the files remain on the drive. On PlayStation, specifically check subscription status as part of the license troubleshooting sequence.
