Install the complete game before the delisting date, then preserve the game files, saves, downloadable content, patches, settings and account-recovery information as separate items. A store purchase is usually an account-bound license, not ownership of a transferable installer. If a game disappears, you may retain access to an installed copy, but a future download, authentication check, missing patch or failed drive can make that access difficult or impossible.
The safest approach combines the platform’s official backup feature with a separate copy of user data, a tested offline or installer-based recovery path, and two copies on different storage devices. The steps below cover PC storefronts and consoles, explain what each backup does not contain, and identify the legal limits on copying and bypassing protection.

What “delisted” means for a digital game
Delisting removes a title from a store’s new-purchase or new-download catalog. It does not always remove a game already installed on your computer or console. In many cases, an account that bought the game can still redownload it from its library; in other cases, the publisher, platform holder or a licensing change can disable downloads, online activation or particular downloadable content.

PlayStation’s terms, for example, describe a store purchase as “a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” Nintendo states that purchases are tied to the Nintendo Account that made them. Consequently, an archive copied to another person’s account, or a copy that still requires a closed authentication service, is not equivalent to a portable ownership certificate.

Delisting also differs from server shutdown. An installed single-player game may continue working, while an online-only title can become unplayable when matchmaking, login or entitlement servers stop responding. A local archive cannot recreate those services.
Back up before the title leaves the store
Install every component while it is still available
Start while the game remains downloadable and your purchase account works. Install the base game, then launch the title and check for every required update. Add purchased DLC, language packs, high-resolution assets, compatibility packs, redistributables and platform-specific components. Some stores deliver these items separately, so an apparently complete base installation may not be enough to restore your actual purchase.
Record the platform and edition, game version, installation path, purchase account identifier, DLC list and the date of the archive. A plain-text note stored with the backup is useful when a game has several executable folders or when the same title exists in standard, deluxe and regional editions.

Make a preservation checklist
- Base game files after the final available update.
- Every owned DLC package, expansion and language pack.
- Save-game folders and automatic-backup files.
- Configuration, graphics, controller and accessibility settings.
- Mods and mod-manager profiles, where their licenses permit private retention.
- Required redistributables or installer packages supplied by the platform.
- A note containing version, paths, account, date and restoration observations.
Steam: create an official backup and prepare Offline Mode
Use Steam’s backup command
Steam provides an official file-backup workflow for compatible titles:
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files and choose a destination with enough free space.
- Wait for the backup to finish, then label the resulting files with the game name, edition and date.
Valve says, “Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool.” A title that uses a separate launcher, external installer or unusual patching system may therefore need a file-system copy and the publisher’s own recovery method as well. Valve also recommends testing created backups; do not assume that a successful archive operation guarantees restoration.

Copy saves and custom files separately
Steam’s game-file backup is not a complete personal-data backup. Save files can be in the game directory, Documents, AppData, a user-profile folder or a title-specific location. Search the game’s support documentation and inspect its folders for directories named Save, Saves, Saved Games, userdata or config. Copy the relevant folders without overwriting the originals.
Preserve screenshots, key bindings, controller profiles, mods and mod-load-order files separately. Put a note beside each folder stating its original path and whether Steam Cloud was enabled. Cloud synchronization can restore progress, but it is not a substitute for a local copy: a conflict, account loss or service change can remove your only accessible version.
Set up Steam Offline Mode before you need it
- Start Steam while connected to the internet and sign in to the purchasing account.
- Allow Steam and each preserved game to finish updates.
- Launch every game once. Confirm that it reaches its main menu and does not request another installer, activation or first-run download.
- Keep credentials available through Steam’s local sign-in option and verify that the account can start the game without a fresh password prompt.
- In the Steam menu, choose Go Offline, then restart or test with the network disconnected.
Valve describes Offline Mode as allowing games to run through Steam without an active connection to the Steam Network. Network-dependent features, cloud synchronization, multiplayer, online authentication and services supplied by a separate launcher will be unavailable. Test the exact game in this state before the title is delisted, because a later client update or license check may change the result.
GOG: preserve the standalone offline installers
When a game is offered with standalone installers, this is the clearest consumer-friendly preservation route in the available guidance. In your GOG account, open the game’s library page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, and download every necessary setup file. Save all parts together, including separate language, expansion and patch installers.
Run the installer without the Galaxy application on a test machine or in a spare folder. Confirm that the game starts, that the correct edition and DLC are present, and that saves can be copied into the expected location. Keep the installer files, patches, readme files and checksums in one clearly named directory. A checksum, such as a SHA-256 value generated by your operating system or a trusted utility, lets you detect a damaged transfer years later.

An offline installer removes dependence on a storefront client for installation, but it cannot guarantee that a game has no online requirement. A title can still contain its own DRM, require a publisher login or rely on servers for multiplayer. Test the game with the network disabled and document any limitation.
Console preservation: what you can and cannot copy
Nintendo Switch and Save Data Cloud
Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud backs up save data for eligible games; it does not create a general archive of the game executable, patches or DLC. Nintendo states that only eligible titles support the service. A membership is required, and access to cloud backups may be unavailable while the membership is expired.
Enable cloud backup for each supported title and verify the most recent upload date. Also use the console’s local save-management tools where available, and keep the Nintendo Account recovery details safe. If a game is delisted, Save Data Cloud can preserve progress when the title and account remain usable, but it cannot reinstall software that is no longer downloadable.
PlayStation and other console libraries
For any console, distinguish three items: the installed game, the save data and the license record. An external-drive copy or console transfer may preserve installed software, but restoring it can still require the purchasing account and an entitlement check. Save backups preserve progress, not the game itself. DLC may be separate content with its own license and download.
Before a delisting, open the purchased library, download the base game and every owned add-on, and launch the title once. Check whether the console permits play with the network disconnected. Keep the recovery email, two-factor authentication method, backup codes and purchase receipts. PlayStation warns that account closure, suspension, service discontinuation or server shutdown can remove access or functionality, so a local drive alone is not a complete contingency.

Build a complete archive instead of one large folder
Organize the archive for future restoration
Create one top-level folder per game with subfolders such as Installers, Steam-backup, DLC-and-patches, Saves, Config-and-mods and Notes. Use a filename that includes the platform, edition and date. Keep a text file containing:
- Store and platform.
- Purchase account name or an internal account label (do not store an unencrypted password in the folder).
- Game and DLC versions.
- Original installation and save paths.
- Whether cloud saves were enabled.
- Whether the game launched offline and what client version was used.
- Checksum values for installers and large archive files.
Keep two copies on separate media
Maintain at least two copies on different storage devices, such as an external USB SSD or hard drive plus another local or offline copy. Separate media protects against a failed drive, accidental deletion and ransomware that encrypts every mounted disk. Disconnect the second copy when it is not being updated, and refresh it after acquiring new DLC or patches.
Do not treat a cloud-sync folder as your only archive. Synchronization can propagate deletion or corruption. If you use encrypted storage, retain the recovery key in a separate secure location that your future self or trusted executor can access.
Test restoration while the store still works
- Choose a spare folder or secondary computer.
- Restore the Steam backup or run the standalone installer.
- Install the documented patches, redistributables and DLC.
- Copy a backed-up save to the documented location.
- Launch with the network disabled, then test once online if the game requires entitlement verification.
- Record the client version, prompts, missing components and the final result in the archive notes.
A restoration test exposes incomplete downloads, corrupted media, missing DLC licenses and a hidden launcher requirement before the original listing disappears.

A perfect file archive can fail if the account that owns the license is inaccessible. Save the recovery email address, current two-factor authentication method, backup codes and purchase receipts. Keep the account’s terms and platform identity documented without placing passwords in an unprotected text file. Update recovery information before changing phone numbers or email providers.

Do not assume that a family member can use your account after your death or that a copied folder transfers the license. Platform terms and local law govern account access, and personal licenses may be non-transferable. Recovery documentation helps the rightful account holder prove ownership; it does not create a new license.
Legal limits on personal game backups
In the United States, Section 117 of the Copyright Act allows an owner of a computer program to make an archival copy under specified conditions. The U.S. Copyright Office notes that although the statute says “archival” copy rather than “backup” copy, the terms are commonly used interchangeably today. The privilege is limited: it generally concerns a lawful copy of a computer program, requires that the archival copy be used only for preservation, and does not authorize distribution.
The Copyright Office also explains that this rule does not extend generally to every downloaded copyrighted work. Separate exemptions in 37 C.F.R. §201.40 are narrow and focus on eligible libraries, archives, museums and specified preservation activities. They are not a blanket permission for every consumer to defeat DRM or share a downloaded game.
- Keep copies for your own lawful preservation and restoration.
- Do not upload installers, cracked executables or account files for others.
- Do not bypass DRM solely because you paid for the game; ownership of a license does not automatically grant that right.
- Check the law where you live, especially if you are outside the United States or are preserving a title for an institution.
- Respect the game’s terms, publisher restrictions and the separate rights in music, video and third-party content.
Legal treatment can depend on jurisdiction, the type of work, the purpose of the copy and the technology used. For a commercial archive, museum project or DRM circumvention question, obtain advice from a qualified lawyer rather than relying on a general consumer rule.
When preservation cannot save the game
Online-only operation
If the title requires a live server for login, matchmaking, world simulation or entitlement validation, local files cannot recreate that service. Preserve the files and saves anyway, because a community server, official replacement or temporary service restoration may later exist, but label the game as server-dependent.
Missing or revoked licenses
DLC, music and regional content can disappear independently of the base game. A restored installation may show a missing-content warning even when the executable is intact. Record every owned add-on and test it before delisting; do not assume that a deluxe edition includes all later expansions.
Broken clients and operating systems
A future operating-system update, obsolete runtime or changed storefront client can prevent launch. Keep legitimate redistributables and the client version used in your test, but do not retain credentials insecurely or modify protected software unlawfully. A virtual machine or an older offline machine may help with preservation, provided your license and local law allow that use.
