Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBack up your iPhone and confirm the backup has finished before handing it in: a service provider may erase the device. Then check that iCloud syncing is complete, protect your passcode and account credentials, and follow the Find My instructions for your iOS version and repair provider.
1. Make a fresh backup and verify it
Apple supports backing up to iCloud or to a Mac or PC. Choose the option you can complete and later access for restoration. The phone may be erased during service, so do not treat the handover as the only copy of your data. See Apple’s backup instructions for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Back up with iCloud
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes.
- Check the date and time shown under Back Up Now. If an alert says there is not enough iCloud storage, resolve that issue and complete a backup before assuming one exists.
Apple’s iCloud backup instructions describe this process. The cited page is for the UK; Apple’s guidance and availability may vary by region.

Use Apple’s computer-backup workflow for the Mac or PC you have, and confirm that the backup completes before disconnecting the iPhone. A computer backup requires a suitable connection; the cable and connector depend on the iPhone and computer. You do not need to buy a cable if you already have a compatible one. Apple’s computer backup instructions cover the available routes.

Choose the route you can reliably restore from
Consider whether you have Wi-Fi and enough iCloud storage, or access to a Mac or PC and a compatible cable. Also consider where the backup will be stored and whether you will be able to use that account or computer when the iPhone comes back. Apple documents both options; neither is universally safer for every setup.
2. Check iCloud syncing separately
A completed backup and completed syncing are separate checks in Apple’s service-preparation checklist. If you use iCloud features, check that they have finished syncing before service; Apple’s checklist says the status icon beside “Saved to iCloud” should be green. See Apple’s service appointment preparation guidance.
3. Secure payment and account information
- Turn off Apple Cash and remove cards and passes from Wallet before service, as Apple directs.
- Do not give anyone your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details. Apple Support states: “Never give your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details to anyone else.”
- If software support requires access to the iPhone, stay present while the technician has access rather than disclosing your passcode.
These steps come from Apple Support’s service preparation page, published September 15, 2026.

iOS 27 or later: check Ready for Repair or Trade In eligibility
For an eligible repair, Apple’s September 2026 instructions say to use Ready for Repair or Trade In and follow the provider’s guidance. This feature keeps Find My on during an eligible repair. See Apple’s Ready for Repair or Trade In instructions.
iOS 26 or earlier: turn off Find My
Apple says to turn off Find My for devices on iOS 26 or earlier. If you cannot complete the step on the iPhone, Apple directs you to use Find My on another device or go to icloud.com/find. Follow the instructions for your provider and region; Apple notes that products and services may not be available in every country.

The iPhone may have been erased. Use the saved iCloud or computer backup to restore your data, or choose to set up the iPhone as new. Apple explains the restoration process in its restore-from-backup instructions.
If you set up the iPhone as new but later want to restore an older backup, Apple advises erasing the device and restoring from that backup promptly: a newer backup created after setup as new can overwrite the previous backup. If you turned off Find My for service, turn it back on when the iPhone returns.
