How PS5 Game Boost Works—and How to Improve PS4 Game Image Quality on PS5 Pro

You don’t need to enable PS5 Game Boost: it works automatically in select compatible PS4 games, with no toggle. Its effect depends on the game and may mean a higher or smoother frame rate; it does not guarantee a resolution or graphics upgrade. If you have an eligible PS5 Pro, a separate setting can enhance image quality for PS4 games.

How to get Game Boost on PS5

  1. Install a compatible PS4 game on your PS5.
  2. Launch the game. Game Boost applies automatically when supported; there is no PS5 setting to switch on.

PlayStation describes Game Boost as a way select PS4 games may benefit from a higher or smoother frame rate. The result varies by title, so don’t expect every game to run at a particular frame rate or resolution. See PlayStation’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance and its overview of the PlayStation ecosystem.

Game Boost is not PS4 Pro Boost Mode

PS4 Pro has a separate Boost Mode that users can toggle. PS5 Game Boost is automatic. PlayStation Blog’s October 9, 2020 article, “PS4 games on PS5: Your top questions answered,” states: “On PS5, PS4 games benefit from Game Boost automatically, and it doesn’t need to be toggled on or off like PS4 Pro’s Boost Mode feature.”

Improve PS4 game image quality on an eligible PS5 Pro

PS5 Pro has a separate option called Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. To find it, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then select the option. PlayStation lists it for consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and requires a screen that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If gameplay behaves unexpectedly, turn the option off. Check PlayStation’s instructions for enhancing PS4 game image quality on PS5 Pro for the current details.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

This PS5 Pro option is not a Game Boost switch. A display’s ability to accept a 2160p or 1440p signal does not mean every game renders at that resolution. Resolution, HDR, VRR and 120 Hz output are separate video features, and their use depends on the game and display. PlayStation explains console resolution settings in its PS5 resolution guide.

If a PS4 game does not improve—or behaves unexpectedly

  • Check the game, not a nonexistent toggle. Game Boost benefits only select compatible titles, and performance changes vary by game.
  • Update your PS5 system software and the game. PlayStation advises using the latest console system software. Backward compatibility does not ensure identical behavior in every PS4 game; some may show errors or unexpected behavior.
  • If you enabled the PS5 Pro image-quality option, disable it as a test. PlayStation recommends switching it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly.
  • Check the display requirement for the PS5 Pro option. The screen must support 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz; this requirement concerns that separate feature, not automatic Game Boost.
