AI household assistants can process more than spoken commands: depending on the platform and settings, their records may include audio, transcripts, typed requests, voice profiles, smart-home activity, or information about people and devices in the home. A shared speaker does not automatically give everyone the same account controls, and household members or guests may still be able to invoke features or encounter information on a shared screen.

Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Siri describe different data practices and controls. The most useful privacy check is to review each person’s account, history and retention settings, shared-home permissions, connected services, child settings, and the device’s physical microphone control.

What can Alexa, Google Home, or Siri hear or remember about your family?

The answer depends on the assistant, feature, account, and settings. A voice request may create a recording or transcript; a typed request may also be saved. Smart-home controls can create a separate record of device status and use. Some features draw on household context such as contacts, family device names, or shared-home membership.

These are the companies’ descriptions of their practices, not a technical audit of every device or account. Regional law, product generation, subscription, account type, settings, and software rollout can affect what happens in a particular home.

Amazon Echo Hub (newest model), 8", Redesigned with customizable control and Alexa+, Compatible with thousands of devices
  • Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
  • Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
  • Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
  • Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
  • Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.
  • Activation is not perfect intent recognition. Google says Gemini for Home waits for an activation signal in standby, but a sound resembling “Hey Google” or an unintended manual activation may also trigger a request sent to Google’s servers. Google’s Home and Nest Privacy Hub explains the distinction.
  • One interaction can leave several kinds of history. Amazon says Alexa history can include recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests; smart-home history can separately include device status and usage. See Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ.
  • Shared-home access is a permissions question. Google says household members with Voice Match may be able to search or view compatible camera and doorbell video history on smart displays, depending on subscription and settings. Guests can also activate devices.

What Google Home and Nest may process

Google’s Home and Nest Privacy Hub describes Gemini for Home activity as potentially including audio and video content, interactions and saved information, automation data, feedback, and usage data. Google says it uses this activity to provide, maintain, and improve home services and to protect Google, users, and the public; the disclosure also includes training generative AI models.

Google says Home History is on by default for most users and has an 18-month default retention period; users can turn it off or change the period. The company says human reviewers may read, annotate, and process interactions to improve quality. It also says video footage, audio recordings, or personally identifiable information are not shared with reviewers or used to improve models unless the user separately consents for that purpose. These disclosures apply to the described features, whose availability can depend on device, rollout, account, and settings. See Google’s Home and Nest Privacy Hub.

For unidentified guests, Google says it processes interactions, including voice commands, to provide service and temporarily stores text transcripts for technical support, but does not use guest audio recordings or transcripts to train its AI models.

What Amazon Alexa and Echo may process

Amazon says an Echo gives a visual or audible indication when it detects its wake word and records audio to stream to the cloud. Account holders can review and delete voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. Amazon lists automatic deletion after 3 or 18 months, or an option not to save voice recordings. It cautions that deleting recordings can affect personalization and features, including Voice ID. Details are in Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ.

Smart-home activity is a separate trail

Amazon says Alexa may receive a thermostat setting when someone adjusts it manually, and may retain device status and usage history to personalize responses and support features such as Hunches, Routines, and Away Lighting. Users can delete or set automatic deletion for some smart-home status and usage information after 3 or 18 months. Amazon cautions that this does not erase every associated item, such as a device’s type or name or voice requests; aggregated patterns or information held separately by the device manufacturer may also remain. The FAQ distinguishes this smart-home history from Alexa interaction history and manufacturer-held records: Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ.

What Apple Siri and HomePod may process

Apple says Siri may use context such as contact names and relationships, music and podcast preferences, family device names, Home app homes and accessories, shared-home members, and labels such as photo people or reminder-list names. Apple says this context and Siri transcripts are associated with a random device-generated identifier that is not tied to an Apple Account or email. It says the information helps determine whether Siri understood and improve recognition, is not used to build a marketing profile, and is never sold.

Apple distinguishes Siri Suggestions from Siri requests: it says Suggestions learn through on-device processing using information such as browsing history, email, messages, images, notifications, and contacts, and are not stored on Apple servers or shared with other third-party apps. Apple says Siri transcripts may be used to fine-tune certain models and that it may review a subset; its disclosure says a small reviewed subset may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement. If Siri acts through a third-party app, that app’s terms and privacy policy apply. Apple’s account is at Siri, Dictation & Privacy.

Apple says users can disable Siri and delete stored Siri and Dictation history. If a user has opted into HomePod Personal Requests, certain local status information—such as nearby timers, alarms, shared media, and phone-call status—plus device proximity may be shared locally with nearby Apple devices so people can control them using Siri.

How to compare privacy settings across assistants

There is no source-backed universal winner across these platforms. A 2025 peer-reviewed profiling study ran experiments with Alexa and other assistants, including commerce-related command queries for Amazon, and discussed limits on how visible profiling is. A 2026 preprint audit compared Google Home Mini, Alexa, and Siri on usability and privacy-related criteria. Its rankings apply to that study’s framework and tested setup, not every household’s current configuration: 2025 Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies study and 2026 arXiv preprint.

Compare What to check
Data types Audio, transcripts, typed prompts, voice identity, device state, camera history, contacts, and home or automation context.
Retention and improvement What history is saved by default, how long it is kept, whether it contributes to service or model improvement, and whether human review is possible.
Household access Who is invited to the home, what Voice Match or similar recognition enables, what guests can invoke, and what shared screens may display.
Third parties What a skill, app, or connected-device maker receives to fulfill a request, and which provider’s terms govern that exchange.
Controls and trade-offs Whether you can inspect, export, delete, disable, or auto-delete data, and which personalized features may stop working.
Children How child profiles, parental consent, response filters, purchase permissions, skill access, and parent review work for your account and region.

What to check in your household

  1. Check each adult’s and child’s account separately; a shared speaker does not mean account controls are shared.
  2. Review who has been invited to the connected home and remove people who no longer need access.
  3. Check Voice Match or equivalent profiles, camera-history access, Personal Requests, third-party skills or apps, shopping, calling, and connected-device permissions.
  4. Review voice and text histories and choose a retention or deletion setting that suits the household.
  5. Explain to children and guests when a shared assistant may respond, what information to avoid sharing, and where the physical microphone control is.
  6. Recheck controls after assistant upgrades or new AI features; settings and retention practices can change.

What child settings do—and do not—mean

Child controls do not mean that no information is handled. Amazon says Amazon Kids recordings, transcripts, and typed requests are used to answer requests and retained so parents can review interactions. Parents can review or delete recordings and can ask Amazon to delete a child’s profile and associated personal information. When a child uses a third-party kid skill, Amazon says it provides request content, but not the voice recording, so the skill can answer; its cited FAQ states restrictions on sharing children’s personal information without permission. See Amazon’s Kids privacy page and Alexa device FAQ.

Google says recordings from children’s features are not saved absent the specified Family Link opt-in. The exact controls and experience depend on the feature and account setup; see Google Safety Centre.
