Before you erase an iPhone or iPad, make a fresh backup and verify that it finished. You can back up to iCloud or to a Mac or Windows computer; the right choice depends on available iCloud space, access to a computer, and whether you want an encrypted local backup. Apple’s backup guide describes both routes.
Choose iCloud or a computer backup
| Method | What you need | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | Wi-Fi and enough available iCloud storage | Backups can run automatically when enabled and the device is connected to power, on Wi-Fi, and locked. A restore also needs Wi-Fi. |
| Mac or Windows computer | A Mac or PC, a compatible USB data cable, and Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes as applicable | A local copy avoids relying on available iCloud storage. You can encrypt it, but you must retain the password to restore it. |
On a Mac, use Finder. On Windows, use Apple Devices, or iTunes if Apple Devices is not installed. iTunes is also the documented option for macOS Mojave or earlier. Computer and device connectors vary, so use a compatible data cable rather than assuming one connector type fits every setup. See Apple’s backup instructions.

Before you erase the device
- Create a new backup instead of assuming an older one is current.
- For iCloud, check the last-backup date and time shown beneath the backup control after it finishes.
- For a computer backup, wait for the operation to complete; later, identify the copy by its date and, where shown, size.
- If you encrypt a computer backup, save its password somewhere you can retrieve it. Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be restored without that password, and previous encrypted backups cannot be used if the password is forgotten.
- Make sure you can sign in to the Apple Account used for iCloud backups and purchases. The restore process may ask you to sign in.
- Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi for iCloud steps. For a computer backup, connect it with a compatible USB data cable.
Back up to iCloud
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes.
- Confirm the updated last-backup date and time displayed below the control.
For automatic backups, turn on iCloud Backup and leave the device connected to power and Wi-Fi with its screen locked. If there is not enough iCloud storage, follow the on-screen steps Apple provides to purchase more. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions.

Back up to a Mac or Windows computer
- Open Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes on Windows if Apple Devices is not installed. For macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB data cable. Respond to any trust or passcode prompts, then select the device in the app.
- Start the backup. If you want an encrypted local backup, select Encrypt local backup and create a password.
- Wait for the backup operation to finish, and keep the password somewhere retrievable if you encrypted the copy.
Apple’s Windows device guide explains local backup encryption. An encrypted copy needs its password during restoration.

Restore from the backup
If the iPhone or iPad is already set up, Apple says to erase it before restoring through the setup assistant. For a device that has just been erased or is new, proceed through setup to Transfer Your Apps & Data and choose the matching restore route. See Apple’s restore instructions.
Restore from iCloud
- During setup, choose From iCloud Backup on the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen.
- Sign in to the Apple Account, review the listed backup dates and sizes, and select the copy you intend to use.
- If prompted that newer software is required, follow the on-screen update steps.
- Stay connected to Wi-Fi while the progress bar completes. If Wi-Fi disconnects, the restore pauses until it returns. Sign in to accounts for purchases if prompted.
Apps, photos, music, and other information may continue downloading after the progress bar finishes. Apple says this can take hours or days depending on how much information is being restored, so keep the device on Wi-Fi and power regularly. Apple also cautions that setting up as new and allowing new iCloud backups to be created can overwrite previously saved iCloud backups; if you plan to use an older backup, erase and restore from it promptly. See Apple’s restore guidance.
