The installation route matters: enrolling in an over-the-air beta may not require a reset, while flashing a factory image or returning to production can erase all data. Check the instructions for your specific beta and Pixel before proceeding.
Back up your Pixel and verify it finished
- Open the backup settings. On your Pixel, open Settings and find Google services > Backup. Labels can differ by Android version, so follow the current wording on your phone. Review the listed backup details to see which data and apps are included. See Google Pixel Help’s backup instructions.
- Start a backup. On the Backup screen, choose Back up now if that option is available. Keep the phone connected and give the process time: Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. That is an upper duration Google states, not a guarantee that your backup will be complete by then. Google’s Android backup guide describes the process.
- Confirm the result before installing. Return to the Backup screen and check the latest backup date and the status of the categories you selected. Do not treat tapping the button as proof that the backup has finished.
Check data that may be outside the device backup
A Pixel device backup is not a promise that every item on the phone can be recovered. Google says photos, videos, and contacts sync through their respective services separately from device backup. Check that the relevant sync is enabled and that the files or contacts appear in the account you expect.
- Third-party apps: Some app data needs an in-app backup. Google specifically advises checking apps such as WhatsApp for chat-history backup before setting up a Pixel. See Google’s Pixel setup guidance.
- Files and downloads: Identify anything important that is stored only on the device and save a separate copy to a location you can access after a reset.
- Authenticator and recovery access: Check each authenticator or security app’s recovery and transfer options. Do not assume its account credentials or codes are included in Android backup.
What is included and restorable can vary by app and Android version. Inspect each app that holds irreplaceable information rather than relying on a general backup indicator.
Know which Google Account you will need
Confirm which Google Account is backing up the Pixel and make sure you can sign in to it during setup and restore. Google recommends protecting backed-up data with a screen lock such as a PIN, pattern, or password. Google’s backup guidance covers this protection.

Check whether your beta installation path can erase the phone
Do not treat all beta installations as equivalent. Google’s guidance for the Android 16 QPR beta says that most users do not need a full data reset to install that beta by enrolling, but recommends backing up before enrollment. That statement applies to the cited Android 16 QPR instructions; it does not establish the rules for every beta release or device.

The factory-image warning appears in Google’s Pixel factory-image instructions. Before using any route, read the current release page for your device and build, including its install and exit instructions. Enrollment and factory-image flashing are different procedures; do not infer that one route’s reset behavior applies to the other.

Understand restore limits if you leave the beta
A backup is essential protection, not a guarantee that every item created or changed on a beta can be restored after a downgrade. Google says restore steps vary by phone and Android version, and a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored onto a phone running a lower version. Check the applicable Android restore guidance before rolling back.
