How to Back Up a OnePlus Phone Before Installing a Beta Update

Create a OnePlus backup before a beta, then keep a verified copy outside the phone. Upgrade and rollback data risks can differ by model, build, and region.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before installing a OnePlus beta, make a backup using instructions for your exact phone and OxygenOS version, then keep a second copy somewhere outside the phone. A local backup can be stored in the phone’s Backup folder; copying that folder to a computer protects the backup if the phone is later wiped. Do not assume a beta upgrade and a rollback have the same effect on your data: OnePlus’s reviewed OnePlus 13 Open Beta notice for India says that upgrade is designed not to clear data, but warns that rollback erases the device.

The safest approach is to confirm the release’s requirements first, create a backup, copy it off the phone, and verify that you can access the copy before you install anything. OnePlus manuals give different menu paths across OxygenOS generations, and the documented local backup does not include app data. Treat those details as part of the preparation, not as reasons to skip a backup.

First check what the beta does to your data

Find the official beta announcement for your exact OnePlus model and regional variant before changing anything. Confirm the required starting build, eligibility, installation steps, and whether that release says the upgrade or a later rollback wipes data. Beta instructions are tied to particular devices, builds, and regions; a notice for one model is not a universal guide.

For example, the reviewed OnePlus 13 Open Beta announcement for India says that the beta upgrade is designed not to clear data, while still strongly recommending a backup as a precaution. It separately says that rollback erases all device contents and requires a backup. The same announcement says carrier-locked variants such as T-Mobile and Verizon are incompatible with those Open Beta builds. Those details apply to that specific release, not automatically to other OnePlus betas or regions.

Plan for the more consequential operation you might perform. If you may need to roll back, treat the backup as essential even when the upgrade itself is intended to preserve data. If the official notice for your release does not clearly state the data consequences, do not infer them from another phone’s beta instructions.

Read the notice as a set of release-specific conditions, not just as a download link. Model, region, eligible starting build, carrier compatibility, installation directions, and rollback instructions all matter. If one of those details does not match your phone, pause and locate the notice for the correct variant instead of assuming the difference is harmless. The OnePlus 13 India example illustrates why: its stated carrier restriction and rollback warning are specific to that Open Beta release, not general rules for every OnePlus phone.

Also distinguish what the notice says about upgrading from what it says about leaving the beta. “Designed not to clear data” is not a promise that data cannot be lost, and it does not describe what happens during rollback. OnePlus explicitly recommends a backup even for the reviewed upgrade, while the rollback procedure is described as erasing device contents. If rollback is a possibility, prepare for that outcome before entering the beta.

Choose a backup route—or use both

The documented options have different strengths. A local backup is created on the phone and can be copied to a computer; Google backup is another option described in a OnePlus 10 Pro manual. Neither should be treated as proof that every app’s private data is saved.

Route Where the copy is stored What the documentation establishes What you need
OnePlus local backup Initially in the phone’s Backup folder The Android 12 manual lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps, but excludes app data. The phone; menu labels vary by OxygenOS version.
Local backup copied to a computer The phone and a separate computer copy Copying the folder gives you a copy outside the phone. The manual warns that local backup data can be cleared by wipe, erase, or factory-reset operations. A data-capable cable compatible with the phone and computer, and enough computer storage.
Google backup Google account storage A OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes Google Drive backup and recovery. It does not establish that every app’s private data is covered. Google backup enabled for the account and an internet connection; Wi-Fi is advised if the data may be too large for mobile data.

For the strongest practical safeguard supported by these instructions, create the local backup and copy its folder to a computer. You can also check that Google backup is enabled and complete, but do not rely on it as a guarantee for app-specific data.

These routes address different risks. A local backup gives you a copy on the handset, but the Android 12 manual warns that wipe, erase, and factory-reset operations clear local backup data. The computer copy adds a second location that is not on the phone. Google backup is another documented route, but it depends on the relevant Google account and does not establish that all app data is included. Using more than one route can give you more than one place to check, but it does not expand what each route actually saves.

Choose the route based on what you can verify. If you have a compatible data cable and computer, the documented local-backup workflow lets you keep a separate copy of the Backup folder. If you use Google backup, confirm it is enabled and complete for the account you intend to use; the OnePlus 10 Pro manual advises Wi-Fi when the amount of data may be too large for mobile data. Do not treat either method as a substitute for checking how important apps handle their own data.

No particular paid service or specific cable model is required by these instructions. A data-capable cable is relevant only if you choose the computer-copy step, and its connector must fit both the phone and computer. Make sure the computer has enough available storage for the folder. The manuals do not provide a universal file-size estimate, so check the folder rather than assuming a particular amount of free space will be sufficient.

Create a local backup using the path for your OxygenOS version

The menu path is not the same in every OxygenOS generation. Use the instructions for your phone rather than following a path simply because it appears in a guide for another model. The Android 12 and OxygenOS 14 manuals provide useful examples of how the labels can differ, but neither path should be presented as a universal current route.

Android 12 manual path

  1. Open Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
  2. Choose the option to create a new backup.
  3. Select the available categories you want to include: contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps. The documented flow includes apps but excludes app data.
  4. Tap Start and let the operation finish. The manual says the backup can take time; do not restart or turn off the phone while it is running.
  5. After completion, look for the backup in the phone’s internal storage under the Backup folder.

Before tapping Start, review the category selection rather than assuming the phone has selected everything you care about. The Android 12 manual identifies contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps as the selectable categories in this flow. It explicitly excludes app data from the apps category. That distinction matters: an app may be listed as included even though the data you created inside it is not part of this local backup.

Allow the backup to complete without interrupting it. The Android 12 manual says the process can take time and cautions against restarting or powering off the phone while it runs. Do not start an update, restart, or turn off the handset just because the process appears to be taking longer than expected. Wait until it has finished, then check for the resulting folder before moving on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OxygenOS 14 manual path

The OxygenOS 14 manual gives a different route: Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup. It recommends local backup for small volumes of data. These are version-specific examples, not guaranteed labels on every current OnePlus phone. If the path does not match your settings, consult the manual or official instructions for your device and software version instead of guessing at a similarly named menu.

The recommendation for small volumes is a reason to check whether the local method suits the amount of data you intend to preserve, rather than assuming it is the right choice for every situation. The manual does not provide a threshold for “small,” so do not infer a specific size limit. If the local route does not fit your needs or its menu is unavailable, consult instructions for your model and version and consider the separately documented Google backup route.

Copy the local backup off the phone

A local backup that exists only on the handset can be lost in the very operation you are trying to prepare for. The OnePlus Android 12 manual warns that local backup data is cleared if you wipe data and cache, erase all data, or restore factory settings. Copy the folder to another device before proceeding.

  1. Connect the phone to a computer with a data-capable cable. A cable that charges the phone but does not transfer data will not work for this step.
  2. When prompted on the phone, select Transfer files.
  3. On the computer, open the phone’s Internal shared storage.
  4. Find the Backup folder and copy it to a location on the computer that you can find again.
  5. Open the copied location and confirm that the folder and its contents are accessible. Do this before starting the beta or any wipe or rollback process.

Keep the original folder on the phone until you have verified the separate copy. The computer copy is the protection against a phone wipe; it does not make the contents of the backup more comprehensive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise about what “copy” means here: the goal is to move a separate copy of the folder onto the computer, not merely to see the folder while browsing the phone. Select Transfer files on the handset, open Internal shared storage on the computer, and copy the folder to a location you can identify later. Then open that copied location and make sure the folder and its contents are accessible. That check confirms you have a separate copy to refer to; it does not confirm that every category of personal data is inside it.

If the computer does not show storage, check the two documented prerequisites first: the cable must support data transfer, and the phone must be set to Transfer files. Reopen Internal shared storage after selecting the transfer mode. If the phone still does not appear, do not proceed as though the copy exists; the verification step is what separates a completed external backup from an attempted one.

Check Google backup as an additional option

A OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes backing up and restoring through Google Drive and advises using Wi-Fi if the data may be too large for mobile data. The exact account settings and available categories can depend on the phone and the Google services in use, so check that backup is enabled for the Google account you intend to use and that it has completed.

Do not assume Google backup—or the local backup’s app selection—contains every app’s private data, settings, or files. For anything important that an app stores separately, check that app’s own export, sync, or account-recovery options before installing the beta. The documented OnePlus local backup flow specifically excludes app data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of Google backup as an additional route to verify, not an all-purpose guarantee. The manual establishes that Google Drive backup and recovery are described for the OnePlus 10 Pro; it does not establish universal coverage across all OnePlus models, every app, or every type of private app data. Check the settings and account you will actually use, and make sure the backup has completed before relying on it.

If mobile data is a concern, follow the OnePlus 10 Pro manual’s advice to use Wi-Fi when the data may be too large for mobile data. The manual does not specify an amount or a data charge, so the practical point is to avoid assuming a large backup will be suitable over a mobile connection. If you cannot confirm the account, enabled status, and completion, do not count Google backup as verified.

Verify the backup before installing

  • Confirm that the backup operation finished rather than assuming that starting it was enough.
  • If using local backup, confirm that the Backup folder exists and that the separate computer copy opens.
  • Check the beta notice again for the exact phone, region, starting build, compatibility limits, and upgrade or rollback data warnings.
  • If using Google backup, verify it is enabled for the intended account and complete; do not treat it as a substitute for protecting data the service does not cover.

Only proceed when the backup you need is present and accessible outside the phone if a wipe is possible. Keep the rollback instructions in view as well as the installation instructions: an upgrade that is designed to preserve data does not mean a later rollback will.

A useful final check is to ask four separate questions: Did the backup finish? Is there a copy outside the phone if local backup is being used? Do you know which categories are covered and which are not? Does the official beta announcement match your model, region, and starting build? A “yes” to the first question alone is not enough if the only local copy could be removed by a wipe.

Do not erase the local copy after installing just because the phone appears to have updated successfully. The rollback warning in the reviewed OnePlus 13 announcement makes the backup relevant after installation as well as before it. Keep the computer copy until you have finished any beta installation or rollback and have confirmed that your important data is available again. The source instructions do not promise a specific restore outcome for every model, so retain the copy while you evaluate your own device and release.

If the settings or backup do not match these steps

  • The menu path is different: The Android 12 and OxygenOS 14 manuals give different paths. Use the manual for your installed OxygenOS generation and model rather than treating either route as universal.
  • The computer does not show the phone’s storage: Check that the cable supports data transfer and that Transfer files is selected on the phone. Then reopen Internal shared storage.
  • The backup is still running: Allow it to finish; the Android 12 manual cautions against restarting or turning off the phone during the operation.
  • You cannot confirm app data is included: The documented local flow excludes app data. Check the app’s own backup or sync mechanism instead of assuming it is captured.
  • The beta notice is for a different region or model: Stop and find the announcement matching your exact device and regional variant. Eligibility, requirements, and data effects can differ between releases.

A backup is useful only if you can retrieve it when needed. Keep the computer copy until you have confirmed that the beta installation or rollback is complete and that your important data is available again.

If you are unsure whether a specific operation will wipe the phone, treat the announcement as the deciding source rather than relying on a generic how-to or a notice for another release. The OnePlus manuals in the documented examples cover different OxygenOS generations and devices; their menu paths and backup descriptions should not be merged into a single universal sequence. For a beta, use the official OnePlus Community announcement for the exact model and region, then use the manual that matches the installed OxygenOS generation for the backup menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will installing a OnePlus beta erase my data?

It depends on the exact model and beta release, so check the official notice for your phone and regional variant. The reviewed OnePlus 13 Open Beta announcement for India says that its upgrade is designed not to clear data, but still strongly recommends backing up first. That statement does not apply automatically to other releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a OnePlus local backup include app data?

The Android 12 manual’s local backup flow lists apps as a category but excludes app data. Do not assume that the app’s private files, settings, or in-app information are included; check that app’s own export, sync, or account-recovery options.

Where is the OnePlus local backup stored?

The Android 12 manual says it is stored in the phone’s internal storage in a Backup folder. Copy that folder to a computer if you need a separate copy that will not be lost with the phone’s local data during a wipe.

Is a local backup on the phone enough before rollback?

Not if the rollback wipes the phone. The Android 12 manual warns that local backup data can be cleared by wipe, erase, or factory-reset operations. Copy the folder to a computer and verify that the copied folder and contents are accessible before proceeding.

Can I use Google backup instead of a computer copy?

A OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes Google Drive backup and recovery, but the documented information does not establish that it covers every app’s private data. Check that Google backup is enabled for the account you intend to use and that it has completed; use Wi-Fi if the amount of data may be too large for mobile data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the backup menu path in my settings is different?

Menu labels vary by OxygenOS generation. The Android 12 manual gives Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup, while the OxygenOS 14 manual gives Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup. Use the manual for your model and installed software version rather than treating either path as universal.

Can I use instructions for another OnePlus model or region?

Use the official beta notice for your exact model and regional variant. The reviewed OnePlus 13 India announcement, for example, says carrier-locked T-Mobile and Verizon variants are incompatible with those Open Beta builds, but that restriction should not be generalized to other releases.

The Bottom Line

Before installing a OnePlus beta, check the official notice for your exact model, region, and starting build; make a local backup using the menu path for your OxygenOS version; and copy the Backup folder to a computer if a wipe is possible. Verify the copy before proceeding, and check app-specific backup options because the documented local flow excludes app data. A beta upgrade and its rollback can have different data consequences.
