First identify which cloud service hosts your files: “lifetime” describes a plan, not a universal export method. Use that provider’s current export or download instructions, then save the downloaded files to an external hard drive or SSD with enough free space. If you use desktop sync, make sure files are actually stored on your computer—not just shown as online-only placeholders—before copying them.
Before you start, identify what needs backing up
Check the provider and the specific account you want to preserve. Make a list of the folders and data you need, including photos, shared items, or other account content. A lifetime plan does not by itself establish which data categories are included or exportable, so check the provider’s current guidance for your account.

Estimate how much data you need to download and confirm that the external drive has enough available space. The right capacity depends on your actual files; there is no universal size recommendation. Check that the drive’s connection and format work with your computer.
Choose an export or sync workflow
Use the provider’s export tool when available
An export tool packages data for download. For Google accounts, Google Takeout lets you select products, choose an archive format (ZIP or TGZ), set a maximum archive size, and download the resulting archive. If the export exceeds the selected maximum, Google splits it into multiple archives. Google also cautions that an archive may not include changes made between the export request and archive creation. See Google’s Takeout instructions for the current process.

After downloading, locate all the archive files before copying them; a large export may consist of several parts. Keep the downloaded archives together so you can identify them as one export.
Use desktop sync only after downloading online-only files
A sync folder can make cloud content appear in your computer’s file browser without storing every file locally. In OneDrive, Files On-Demand can leave items online-only. Microsoft says to use “Always keep on this device” for selected items you need offline; its “Download all files” setting downloads the OneDrive folder and consumes local disk space. A cloud icon means an item is online-only, not that a full local copy is ready to back up. Check Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance for details.

Open the external drive in your file browser and browse the destination folder to check that the copied files appear there. Keep the cloud copy until you have checked the backup
Do not delete the original cloud data just because an export has finished downloading. Google states, “If you download your Google data, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.” That assurance applies to Google’s download process; check another provider’s instructions, and do not assume that deleting or changing synced files behaves the same way. Once the copy is on the drive, confirm the expected folders and archive parts are present before relying on it.
