When you pay, the app helps you identify the recipient and approve the payment; banks handle the accounts and the payer’s UPI PIN authentication; and NPCI operates and coordinates the network that connects participating institutions. UPI is one payment component within the broader India Stack framework, not another name for the whole framework.
What UPI is—and what it is not
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) over the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure. It enables transfers between bank accounts, and NPCI says UPI payments are available 24/7. A UPI-enabled app provides the customer-facing way to initiate a payment, but the money remains in bank accounts and moves through participating payment and banking institutions. NPCI’s UPI FAQ explains setup, supported payment details, availability, and common transaction issues.

UPI supports person-to-person transfers as well as payments to merchants. A recipient can often be addressed by a UPI ID or QR code, so the payer need not manually enter full bank-account details. NPCI also lists account number plus IFSC and other addressing options; what a user can select depends on the app and participating bank. An app may also offer intent, app-based, or collect payment modes, so screens and technical routes can differ.

The following is a simplified, reader-level flow—not a complete technical protocol. The precise route and interface can vary by app, bank, recipient type, and payment mode. NPCI’s FAQ and UPI Product Booklet describe the participants and supported modes.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Start in a UPI-enabled app. The payer has registered with a PSP and linked a bank account to the app.
- Identify the recipient. Depending on the app and payment, the payer can use a UPI ID, scan a QR code, choose a supported mobile-number option, or enter bank-account details such as account number and IFSC.
- Check the payment details. The payer reviews the recipient and amount before proceeding. For a merchant payment, the app may open a payment request through a supported merchant mode; a collect request is initiated from the receiving side.
- Approve with the UPI PIN. The payer authorizes the transaction in the app. The remitter bank authenticates the UPI PIN; it is not a password to share with the recipient or merchant.
- Participants process the transfer. The payer-side PSP supports the transaction, the remitter bank processes the debit, and NPCI’s network routes and coordinates the payment with the receiving side.
- The recipient is credited and status is returned. The beneficiary bank credits the recipient’s account, and the participating sides return a transaction status to the app.
Who processes a UPI payment?
UPI involves distinct roles. An app is not necessarily the bank that holds the money, and NPCI is not the payer’s bank. An institution may perform more than one role, but the functions remain different. NPCI’s Product Booklet describes the participant responsibilities.
| Participant | What it does |
|---|---|
| NPCI | Owns, operates, provides services for, and coordinates the UPI network. |
| Payer PSP | Supports customer onboarding into a UPI app, registration, and transaction approval. |
| Remitter bank | Holds the payer’s UPI-linked account, debits it for the transfer, and authenticates the UPI PIN. |
| Payee PSP | Onboards a recipient or merchant to receive money or raise a collect request. |
| Beneficiary bank | Receives the transfer and credits the recipient’s account. |
| Acquiring bank | Provides UPI infrastructure to a merchant and is involved in merchant onboarding. |
For merchant acceptance, a QR code, intent, app-based flow, or collect request may be involved. The acquiring bank provides the merchant-side infrastructure; the exact arrangement depends on the payment mode and participants.

How UPI relates to India Stack
India Stack is a broader connected national framework built on open APIs and public digital goods, as described by India’s Press Information Bureau. UPI belongs in that wider digital public infrastructure context as a payment system. It is not a single all-purpose app and should not be treated as a synonym for India Stack.

- Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction
- An account does not appear: Check that the mobile number verified by the UPI app matches the number linked to the bank account. NPCI says a mismatch can prevent accounts from being fetched.
- A payment fails after PIN entry: A wrong UPI PIN causes the transaction to fail. Repeated incorrect entries may lead the bank to temporarily block sending UPI payments.
- A payment is declined: NPCI describes real-time reversals for declined transactions. If the debited amount does not reverse, contact the bank.
Safety checks before approving a payment
- Keep the UPI PIN secret; do not disclose it to a recipient or merchant.
- Check the recipient and amount before authorizing the payment.
- Before an international UPI payment, check the recipient, the final amount in both currencies, and any applicable exchange rate or fee. NPCI provides this guidance on its UPI Global Acceptance page.
Features, participating apps and banks, supported international locations, transaction limits, and fees can change. Check the information shown by your app and bank for the payment you are making.
