Set up a spoiler-free routine before opening any social app

Open the muted-words screen
- Open X and go to Notifications.
- Select the gear icon to open notification settings.
- Choose Muted.
- Open Muted words.
- Add the terms listed below one at a time.
Add broad and specific terms
Enter each of these as a separate muted word or phrase:

Apply the mute where spoilers arrive
Set the muted words to apply to both your Home timeline and Notifications. Selecting only notifications can leave spoiler text visible while you browse the Home feed; selecting only Home can still allow replies or mentions to interrupt you.
Choose an expiration period
Use a temporary period that matches your plan, such as seven days for a launch-weekend buffer or 30 days for a longer campaign window. A temporary expiration prevents an old game-specific list from remaining active indefinitely. You can return to the same muted-words screen and extend the period if you have not finished.
What X can and cannot hide
The mute works when X recognizes one of your chosen terms in the relevant text. It does not guarantee that every post, image, or notification is safe. A spoiler can bypass the list through an image with no matching text, an alternate spelling, a euphemism, or a notification that omits the keyword. Treat the X mute as your strongest automated layer, not as permission to browse freely.

Use Reddit’s spoiler labels without relying on them
Reddit officially supports spoiler tags. A tagged post is labeled as containing spoilers so readers can choose whether to reveal it; Reddit describes these as “labels used to clearly identify a post as containing spoilers” in its spoiler-tag guidance. The protection depends on the person posting and the moderators applying the label correctly.
Leave or mute the highest-risk communities
During your spoiler window, leave the Modern Warfare 4 subreddit and any other communities dedicated to the campaign, missions, characters, or launch discussion. It is not a viewer-side rule that scans every title, image, comment, or recommendation for “MW4” or “ending.” An untagged post can appear in a feed, and a correctly tagged post can still reveal information through its title, preview image, or notification before you open it.
Reduce exposure beyond the subreddit
- Do not browse Reddit’s home feed if it mixes gaming communities with your normal subscriptions.
- Disable or silence Reddit notifications that could surface replies, trending posts, or community activity during the spoiler window.
- Avoid opening comments on posts that mention the game, even when the post itself appears harmless.
- Do not follow links from a safe-looking discussion to external videos, clips, or image galleries.
Leaving the community is often safer than trying to inspect every post for a spoiler label, because the label system requires consistent human use.
Stop YouTube from feeding campaign spoilers
YouTube does not document a universal viewer keyword mute that removes chosen words from video titles, thumbnails, search results, or recommendations. Its blocked-words feature is intended for creators moderating comments and live chat; it does not hide campaign videos from a viewer’s home page.

Avoid the searches that create the problem
For the duration of your spoiler window, do not search YouTube for Modern Warfare 4, its characters, missions, weapons, ending, campaign, launch coverage, or review clips. Even a search made to find an unrelated tutorial can become a recommendation signal. Do not open Shorts or videos whose title, thumbnail, or channel description looks adjacent to the campaign. Disable autoplay wherever the YouTube app or website exposes the control. Without autoplay, a video you opened for another reason is less likely to roll directly into a related clip containing story details. Autoplay does not remove a thumbnail from the page, so pair this setting with deliberate browsing and a willingness to leave the page immediately.
Train the feed away from launch coverage
When an unexpected recommendation appears, open its options menu and choose Not interested. If an entire channel repeatedly posts campaign material, choose Don’t recommend channel. These controls respond to what you see; they are not a comprehensive keyword blacklist. Use them without opening the video or reading its comments.
Why creator blocked words do not solve viewer exposure
A creator can block words in comments and live chat on their own channel. That setting does not prevent another creator’s title, thumbnail, Short, or recommendation from appearing to you. Do not spend your spoiler-prevention effort configuring a creator moderation feature that has no viewer-side coverage.
Compare the platforms before choosing your protection
The practical difference is not whether a service uses the word “spoiler.” It is whether you can control what reaches your screen before you open it.

Among these services, X is the only one with a documented viewer keyword mute for this purpose. Reddit’s labels and YouTube’s recommendation controls are useful, but they require more avoidance and manual judgment.

A spoiler does not need to arrive through a public post. Temporarily silence gaming push notifications, group-chat alerts, and social widgets on your phone, tablet, browser, or desktop. The exact menu names vary by operating system and app version, so focus on the source rather than assuming one universal path: disable notifications for gaming communities, social apps, and chats that routinely discuss new releases.
Set expectations with friends
Tell friends exactly what you want: no campaign details, screenshots, clips, reaction images, mission names, or links until you confirm that you are finished. A message saying “no spoilers” can be interpreted narrowly, while a specific request covers visual and indirect clues as well as explicit plot text. Ask people not to mention the ending even as a joke.
Remove trending surfaces
Avoid trending or popular panels during the window. These surfaces are designed to show what is receiving attention, which makes them likely to include launch reactions even when you did not search for the game. Do not open an unfamiliar hashtag or browse a gaming widget simply because it appears on the first screen.
Understand the limits of every filter
Keyword systems match text; they do not understand the story information contained in a picture or video frame. The following exposures can slip past a carefully configured list:
- Images and thumbnails: A character reveal or mission outcome may be visible without any matching words.
- Speech and video: A clip can contain spoken details while its title avoids the game’s name.
- Alternate spellings: Users can remove spaces, substitute characters, abbreviate differently, or use code words.
- Euphemisms: Posters may describe a plot event without using “spoiler,” “ending,” or “campaign.”
- Untagged Reddit posts: A poster or moderator may forget to apply the spoiler label.
- Keyword-free notifications: A reply, recommendation, or alert may omit the term you muted while still linking to revealing content.
These are structural limitations, not settings you can repair with one additional word. The safest response is to reduce the number of surfaces you visit until the campaign is complete.
A practical launch-day checklist
Before you start playing
- Confirm X muted words include all ten entries and apply to Home and Notifications.
- Set the X expiration to the number of days you actually need.
- Leave or mute the Modern Warfare 4 subreddit and related campaign communities.
- Turn off autoplay on YouTube.
- Decide which YouTube recommendations will receive Not interested or Don’t recommend channel without opening them.
- Silence gaming push notifications, group chats, and social widgets.
- Tell friends what content is off-limits.

If you have not finished, extend the temporary X period rather than assuming the original seven or 30 days will be enough.
What to do after an accidental exposure
If a spoiler appears, stop interacting with the item immediately. Do not comment, like, share, open replies, or visit the account; each action can produce more related recommendations. On YouTube, use Not interested or Don’t recommend channel from the unopened recommendation menu. On Reddit, leave or mute the community that surfaced it. On X, add the exact new term if the post revealed a recurring phrase, then return to the Home and Notifications settings to confirm the mute applies in both places.
Tell friends that an accidental exposure occurred and repeat the specific boundaries for the rest of your window. The goal is not to make the first mistake harmless; it is to prevent one glimpse from becoming a stream of additional details.
The most reliable strategy
Use X’s temporary muted words, Reddit community avoidance, YouTube search and recommendation discipline, and notification silencing together. Each platform covers a different part of the exposure path, and none can detect every visual or untagged spoiler. When the campaign matters more than staying current with social feeds, temporarily staying away from high-risk communities and launch coverage is safer than trying to filter every variation.
