The most reliable way to stop impulse-buying new games is to slow the transaction down. Put the game on a wishlist, apply a fixed cooling-off period, verify its fit with independent reviews and representative gameplay, calculate the complete cost, and check the refund rules before downloading or streaming. Then add account friction: remove saved payment details, require a password, disable in-game purchases where possible, and set a spending limit.
Why a new game can feel impossible to resist
A launch combines several powerful prompts: novelty, a countdown sale, an influencer recommendation, social pressure from friends, and fear of missing out. A store can turn that excitement into a purchase in seconds when your card is already saved and the download starts immediately.

In-game monetization adds another layer. A game may have a base price, downloadable content (DLC), a season pass, a subscription requirement, paid virtual currency, randomized rewards, or cosmetic bundles. Each item can look small on its own while the combined commitment is much larger. Virtual currencies are especially easy to underestimate because the screen shows tokens rather than dollars, pounds, or euros. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says confusing exchange rates can separate the purchase from the real-world spending decision, making mental accounting harder. The European Commission similarly says virtual currencies can “psychologically disconnect the act of spending from real-world” money.
Impulse control is therefore not a test of willpower at the checkout screen. It is a system-design problem. Make the decision slower, make the price legible, and require evidence that the game belongs in your library.

Use a pre-purchase gate before you pay
Apply the following checks in order. If a game fails any check, leave it wishlisted rather than buying immediately.
1. Separate a genuine need from novelty
Ask what specific job this game does in your current library. Does it provide a genre, co-op option, accessibility feature, or play style you do not already have? Or is the main attraction a trailer, a review score, a limited-time badge, or other people saying you must play it now?
Write one sentence before purchasing: “I am buying this because it fills ______, and I expect to play it ______.” If you cannot complete both blanks without mentioning the sale or the release date, treat the desire as novelty rather than a confirmed need.

2. Calculate the complete commitment
Use the total cost, not the store tile’s headline price. Include the items that apply to your situation:

Put the total against your entertainment budget and your existing backlog. A low introductory price is not a bargain if it displaces a game you already own and intend to play, or if the full experience requires recurring purchases.
3. Gather evidence of fit
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends reading online reviews and ratings and watching videos of people playing the game. Use those checks deliberately:
- Read several positive and negative reviews rather than relying on a single score.
- Look for comments about performance, accessibility, matchmaking, save systems, required online access, and the amount of the game locked behind extra payments.
- Watch unedited or minimally edited gameplay from the platform and hardware you use. Trailers are designed to create excitement; ordinary play reveals pacing, menus, loading, and repetition.
- Check the age and content rating, including descriptors that could affect your household or your own preferences.
- Confirm that the advertised features are available in your region and on your edition.
Evidence does not need to prove that a game is universally good. It needs to answer whether it is a good fit for you at this price and at this point in your backlog.

4. Apply a cooling-off rule
Add the game to a wishlist and wait for a fixed period: 24 hours is a workable minimum, while waiting until your next monthly budget review is safer for expensive releases. During the wait, do not keep the store page open or watch promotional countdowns. If the desire remains after the timer expires and the game still passes the other checks, reassess it with the same budget rather than with the urgency of the launch moment.
A cooling-off rule is a behavioral safeguard, not a claim that every game will be cheaper later. Its purpose is to separate a considered commitment from a transient emotional spike.
Add friction to every purchase path
The FTC describes three useful account controls: disable purchases, require a password, and impose a dollar limit. The exact menu names differ by console, phone, computer, and family account, but the principle is the same: make payment require a deliberate action that excitement cannot bypass.
Remove stored payment details
Delete saved cards and payment accounts from stores where you tend to browse impulsively. If a platform requires a payment method for subscriptions, keep only the method you deliberately chose and turn on authentication for each transaction. A few extra fields at checkout create enough time to notice the total and reconsider.
Require authentication for purchases
Turn on a password, passcode, PIN, or biometric confirmation for every purchase, not only for changing account settings. Avoid a code that is already used to unlock the device if other household members know it. For a family account, the person who controls the payment method should keep the purchasing credential private.
FTC consumer guidance states: “Use parental controls to disable in-app purchases or require a password for all purchases on your phone or tablet.” The same idea is useful for adults who want a pause before buying.
Set a spending cap
Where the account offers a dollar limit, set it below the amount that would damage your monthly budget. A cap is most effective when it covers in-game spending as well as store purchases. Review whether the limit resets daily, weekly, or monthly, and whether it applies to every profile or only a child account.

Disable in-game purchases when possible
Turn off the purchase feature at the account or device level if you do not need it. FTC guidance describes in-game purchase restrictions as a way to limit or block in-game spending. If a game requires purchases to be enabled for ordinary play, treat that requirement as a cost and a warning rather than quietly switching the control back on.

Do not decide in tokens. Convert every proposed purchase into your local currency before pressing the buy button.
Convert the exchange rate
Use this calculation:
real-money cost per currency unit = bundle price ÷ currency units received
Then multiply by the price of the item or activity you want. If a bundle leaves you with unused currency, include the cost of the next bundle needed to reach the target, or assign a proportional value to the leftover amount. Never treat leftover tokens as free; they were purchased with real money and are designed to encourage another transaction.
Pause at common warning signs
- Countdown timers or “last chance” labels that make you feel you must act immediately.
- Limited-time bundles that combine currency, cosmetics, and random items so you cannot compare each component’s value.
- Randomized rewards or loot boxes, especially when the probability of receiving each outcome is hard to find.
- Escalating offers that become more expensive after an initial purchase.
- Several currency denominations that prevent a simple one-to-one price comparison.
The UK government’s guidance calls for clear probability disclosures for paid loot boxes and a default £0 spending limit on child accounts. Those recommendations reflect a broader consumer-protection concern: when the odds and real-money price are difficult to see, people have less information at the moment they decide.
Read the probability information, calculate the maximum you could spend, and decide whether a non-random purchase would meet the same need. If the answer is yes, choose the known item or skip the transaction.
Check the refund window before downloading
Refund eligibility is platform-specific and time-sensitive. Read the policy for the store and region you will use before you download or stream the game, because starting access can change your eligibility.

As one published example, PlayStation’s checklist generally requires that a request for a game or DLC be made within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed. This is an example, not a universal rule: other marketplaces can use different deadlines, exclusions, or definitions of “use.” Confirm the current conditions for your account and country.
- Open the platform’s official refund or transaction-support page before purchase.
- Record the deadline, whether downloading or streaming disqualifies the transaction, and any exceptions for pre-orders, subscriptions, or consumables.
- Do not start the download or stream while you are still deciding if preserving the option matters to you.
- Keep the order receipt and note the purchase date.
- If the game is unsuitable, submit the request through the platform’s stated process before the deadline and describe the relevant condition accurately.
A refund policy is an exit plan, not permission to buy without checking fit. A short window can expire while a large download is installing, so make the policy part of the pre-purchase gate.

Children can be especially vulnerable to confusing currencies, randomized rewards, and social pressure. Use a separate child profile with purchases disabled or set to a £0 limit where that option exists, and require an adult password for any exception. Explain the real-money value of the game’s currency rather than relying on the token name.
A UK government response cited a 2021 survey across five countries in which 37% of UK parents of children who spent money in video games were using parental controls. The figure is a survey result from that response, not a target or a measure of effectiveness. The practical lesson is to check the controls explicitly rather than assuming they are enabled by default.
Review the settings after a system update, a new console profile, or a change in payment method. A restriction applied to one account may not cover another profile, mobile device, or linked store.
A simple decision workflow for a new release
Use this workflow whenever a store page makes you want to buy immediately.
- Capture the interest: add the game to your wishlist instead of your cart.
- Name the reason: write the specific gap it fills and when you will play it.
- Wait: apply your 24-hour or next-budget-review rule.
- Verify the fit: read a range of reviews, check ratings, and watch representative gameplay.
- Price the whole commitment: include DLC, passes, subscriptions, currency, accessories, and online-service requirements.
- Check monetization: identify timers, randomized rewards, escalating offers, and the probability disclosures for paid loot boxes.
- Confirm the exit: read the platform’s refund deadline and download or streaming conditions.
- Add friction: remove saved payment details, require authentication, disable in-game purchases, or set a cap.
- Decide once: buy only if the game still fits the budget and backlog after every check.
If any answer is unknown, the correct action is to wait while you find it. Uncertainty is not evidence that the game is a good deal.
What to do if you already bought impulsively
Act before access changes your options
Stop the download or streaming session if the platform’s policy makes use relevant. Open the refund page, check the deadline, and submit a truthful request if the transaction qualifies. Do not buy additional currency or DLC while deciding whether to keep the base game.
Close the easy route to another purchase
Remove the saved payment method, require a password, and disable in-game purchases or set a lower cap. These changes address the next transaction even if the current purchase cannot be reversed.
Record what triggered the decision
Note whether the trigger was a sale timer, a friend recommendation, a trailer, a currency bundle, or a fear of missing out. Use that note to adjust your system: mute promotional notifications, leave a social group temporarily, or increase the cooling-off period for similar releases.
Build a backlog and budget that reduce temptation
Keep a short, visible list of games you already own and the next one you genuinely intend to play. Before a new purchase, choose where it fits and what it replaces. A “one in, one started” rule can prevent a growing queue from turning every new release into another obligation.
Set a gaming allowance for a defined period and divide it between full games, recurring services, and optional in-game spending. Treat virtual currency as spending from the same allowance, not as a separate category. Review actual transactions at the end of the period; the objective is awareness, not punishment.
Finally, make browsing less transactional. Unsubscribe from store alerts that create urgency, browse wishlists instead of sale pages, and use the platform’s family and authentication controls even when you are the only player. The best safeguard is the one that operates before excitement reaches the payment screen.

There is no general statistic established here for how often adults impulse-buy newly released games. You do not need a population estimate to make the controls above effective for your own spending.
