The safest way to buy a ticket is to begin with the event’s official information: the artist, venue, promoter or organiser’s website. Follow its ticket link to the primary box office or to a resale service it identifies as authorised. Before paying, verify the seller, exact seat, restrictions, delivery method, total price and refund terms. Keep the transaction and support conversation on the platform, pay by credit card or another protected method, and never send an unknown seller a bank transfer or virtual currency.
If a ticket is rejected, missing or already used, contact the official issuer and your payment provider immediately, preserve every record and report the listing. No payment method guarantees admission, but this process removes the most common opportunities for fraud.

Why fake-ticket scams work
Ticket fraud combines a desirable event with a short deadline. A scammer may copy an event logo, build a look-alike website, advertise seats before the official sale opens or claim to have tickets for an event that does not exist. On social media, the seller can create urgency with messages such as “last chance” or “I have one spare,” then move the conversation away from any platform that could review the transaction.
The promised ticket can fail in several ways. It may never arrive, be a copied barcode, have been stolen from another buyer, be restricted to the original purchaser, or have already been scanned. A genuine-looking electronic file is not proof that the ticket is valid; only the event issuer’s systems can determine whether it can be admitted.

The scale is significant. UK Home Office figures published in 2025 recorded about 3,700 gig-ticket fraud reports to Action Fraud during 2024. Almost half involved offers on social media, and people in their twenties represented 27% of victims. A 2026 UK Home Office and O2 campaign said £150 million had been lost to ticket fraud in the previous year; 14% of surveyed gig-goers said they had bought a fake ticket, and 77% of those purchases were made through online platforms. These figures describe UK findings and should not be treated as a worldwide rate.
The safest buying route, in order
1. Start with the event’s own information
Search for the artist, team, venue or festival’s official website rather than a ticket advertisement. Use the event page, venue box office, official promoter or authorised agent to find the sale link. Report Fraud’s consumer guidance is to buy only from the venue’s box office, official promoter or agent, or a well-known ticketing website. The link you reach from the event’s own information is more useful than a search result that merely looks official.
Check the event name, date, location and on-sale time against the organiser’s announcement. A seller offering tickets before the stated sale date, or for an event the organiser has not announced, is asking you to trust an unverifiable claim.
2. Establish whether resale is authorised
When the primary sale is sold out, return to the event or venue page and look for its named resale partner. An independent resale site is safer when the event issuer identifies it as an authorised channel and explains how tickets are transferred. Do not rely on a seller’s screenshot of a logo or a statement that a platform is “official.” Open a new browser tab, navigate to the event issuer yourself and confirm the relationship there.
3. Read the listing as a contract
Before choosing a seat, make sure the listing identifies who is selling it, where the seat is located and whether it has restrictions. Look for standing-area rules, age limits, restricted-view warnings, accessibility conditions, name-matching requirements, delivery deadlines and whether transfer is permitted. Confirm the event issuer, venue or promoter’s connection with the resale service, not just the marketplace’s marketing language.

Proceed to checkout far enough to see the complete price. Compare the face value, resale price, service charges, delivery fees, taxes and any optional add-ons. A low headline price can become expensive at the final screen, while an unusually high price can indicate a speculative listing or an attempt to exploit urgency. UK secondary-ticketing guidance calls for clear information about seller identity, platform or organiser connections, restrictions, seat location, pricing and availability.
4. Confirm delivery and entry rules
Find out when and how the ticket will arrive: an official account transfer, a mobile ticket released close to the event, a physical ticket or another method. Read what happens if the seller cannot deliver by the stated deadline. Check whether the event issuer guarantees entry for tickets bought through that channel, and under what conditions a replacement or refund is offered. If the terms are silent, ask support before paying and keep the answer.
5. Pay without leaving the platform
Use the platform’s own checkout. Never follow a seller-provided payment link, switch to a private bank transfer, or pay in virtual currency because the seller promises a discount. A credit card or a protected payment service such as PayPal can provide a dispute route in some circumstances, but neither guarantees that you will enter the event or recover every loss. Do not share a one-time verification code with a seller or “support agent.”
6. Secure the accounts involved
Use a unique password for your ticketing account and for the email account that receives ticket notifications. Turn on two-step verification where available. If a message tells you to contact support, close it and use the venue or ticket issuer’s independently verified website to find the support address. A scammer who controls your email can intercept a legitimate transfer or reset your ticketing password.
7. Preserve the transaction record
Save the listing address, seller profile, screenshots, messages, invoice, payment reference, confirmation email and the original ticket file. Keep the records until after you have entered the venue and no longer need to contest the purchase. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes dates, usernames or transaction details.

How to judge a resale service
Use these checks before creating an account or entering card details:
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Authorisation | The event, venue, promoter or original issuer names the service as an authorised resale partner. | An unaffiliated marketplace may have no direct way to confirm that a ticket can be transferred or admitted. |
| Seller identity | The listing states whether the seller is an individual, business or professional trader and provides the information required in your jurisdiction. | Knowing who is responsible is important if delivery fails or the ticket is invalid. |
| Seat and restrictions | Section, row and seat (or the exact standing-area description), restricted-view notices, age rules and name or ID requirements. | A valid barcode can still be unusable if the purchaser does not meet the event’s conditions. |
| Price transparency | Resale amount, service fee, delivery charge, tax and the final total before payment. | Comparing only the advertised price hides the real cost. |
| Delivery | Transfer method, expected release date and what happens if the ticket is not delivered. | Some mobile tickets are intentionally released shortly before the event; others cannot be transferred at all. |
| Refund or replacement | The written terms for cancellation, postponed events, duplicate tickets, denial at the door and seller non-delivery. | A “guarantee” is meaningful only when its conditions and deadlines are stated. |
| Support | A support channel reachable through the service’s independently verified website, with a case number or written record. | Scammers imitate support accounts in direct messages. |
If any material answer is missing, pause the purchase. “Verified seller” or “secure ticket” badges are not substitutes for the event issuer’s confirmation and the platform’s actual terms.
Primary sale, authorised resale and social-media offers compared
| Buying route | Authorisation | Information normally available | Payment and dispute path | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary official sale | Directly connected to the event issuer or its appointed ticket office. | Official event details, price categories, venue map and issuer rules. | Issuer checkout and its stated cancellation or refund policy. | Demand can sell out quickly; fake look-alike sites may imitate the official page. |
| Authorised resale | Named by the event, venue or original ticket issuer. | Seller identity, seat, restrictions, fees, delivery and resale terms should be shown. | Platform checkout, with the written replacement or refund process. | Restrictions or release timing can make a legitimate ticket unusable if ignored. |
| Social-media message or marketplace listing | Usually not established by the event issuer. | May be only a screenshot, profile claim or partial seat description. | Often requests a bank transfer, virtual currency or an external link; recovery is difficult. | Non-delivery, copied barcodes, impersonation and pressure to pay immediately. |
The safest option is the route that you can reach from the event’s official information and that keeps payment, transfer and support inside a verifiable platform.
Red flags that should stop the purchase
- Unsolicited contact: a direct message appears after you mention an event, or a new account offers “extra” tickets without a public listing.
- Pressure: the seller says other buyers are waiting, demands a deposit immediately or refuses to let you verify details.
- Implausible timing: tickets are offered before the official sale opens or for an event the organiser has not announced.
- Unrealistic price: the offer is far below normal without a clear, verifiable reason, or far above normal while claiming guaranteed access.
- Payment diversion: the seller moves you to a personal bank account, virtual currency, gift cards or a payment page that is not the platform’s checkout.
- Incomplete listing: no exact seat or standing area, no restrictions, no seller identity, no final total and no written refund terms.
- Account imitation: a profile uses a similar name, logo or blue-check-style image but is not linked from the official event account.
- Refusal to use the platform: the seller claims platform fees are the reason for an off-platform deal or says buyer protection will be added later.
Any one of these signs warrants independent verification. Several together mean you should leave the conversation and report the account.
Buying safely when an event is sold out
- Check the event page periodically for an official ticket release, production hold, venue return or issuer-run waitlist.
- Follow the issuer’s link to its named authorised resale service rather than searching for a new marketplace.
- Set a maximum total price before browsing, including every fee and delivery charge. Do not let a countdown or competitive bidding change that limit.
- Read transfer and identity rules before selecting a listing. If the original purchaser must attend, a resale ticket may not solve your problem even if the barcode is genuine.
- Pay through the authorised service and save the confirmation, transfer instructions and support contact.
- If no authorised route exists, treat the event as unavailable rather than accepting an unverified social-media offer.
What the law and regulators say
United Kingdom
In November 2025, the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Business and Trade announced proposals to prohibit resale above the original ticket price plus unavoidable fees, cap platform service fees, require platforms to enforce the cap and prevent individuals from reselling more tickets than they could buy in the original sale. These were announced proposals; readers should check the current law and the event’s own conditions before relying on a cap or entitlement. Rules can also differ by event and jurisdiction.

The Competition and Markets Authority has taken action over misleading resale information and required better disclosure of ticket identity, restrictions, seat location, pricing and availability. Those principles explain why a listing that withholds these details deserves caution even when it appears on a large website.
United States
The Federal Trade Commission says ticket-buying bots can bypass purchase limits by using false names or addresses. The Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act covers public events at venues with capacity above 200. In enforcement cases concluded in 2021, brokers agreed to $3.7 million in civil penalties. The law addresses circumvention and deceptive practices; it does not turn every resale listing into a guaranteed ticket.
Elsewhere
Consumer-protection, resale-price and chargeback rules vary. Check the law where you live, the event’s location and the ticket’s terms. An overseas seller or event can create additional problems with currency conversion, identity checks, delivery deadlines and which authority can investigate a complaint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If your ticket is fake, missing or rejected
- Contact the official issuer immediately. Use the venue, promoter or ticket issuer’s verified website, not a contact supplied by the seller. Ask whether the ticket number was invalid, duplicated, already scanned, cancelled or restricted and request written confirmation.
- Contact your payment provider. Ask whether a card dispute, chargeback or protected-payment claim applies. Give the provider the transaction date, amount, seller information, listing, messages and issuer’s response. Deadlines can apply, so do this promptly.
- Report the listing and account. Use the marketplace’s fraud-report function and preserve the report or case number. Reporting can help stop additional sales.
- Report to authorities. In the UK, submit the case to Report Fraud. In other countries, use the national fraud-reporting service or police. Include the payment reference and all preserved evidence.
- Protect your accounts. Change reused passwords, revoke unfamiliar sessions, enable two-step verification and watch your card and email for follow-up fraud.
Be wary of a second scam. Someone may claim to be a recovery agent, lawyer or investigator and demand an upfront fee to retrieve the ticket money. Do not pay a new stranger to recover the first loss; verify any official contact independently and ask your payment provider or fraud-reporting authority for the correct next step.

A practical checklist before you press “Buy”
- I reached the sale or resale page from the event, venue, promoter or issuer’s official information.
- The resale service is explicitly identified as authorised, if this is not the primary sale.
- I know who the seller is and have the exact seat or standing-area description.
- I have read restrictions, transfer rules, delivery timing and entry requirements.
- The checkout shows the complete, non-optional total and the applicable currency.
- I know the written refund, replacement and non-delivery process.
- I am paying inside the platform with a method that offers a dispute process where applicable.
- I have not been rushed, redirected to a private payment or asked for a verification code.
- My ticketing and email accounts use unique passwords and two-step verification.
- I will save the listing, messages, receipt and ticket until after entry.
Short answers to common questions
How can I tell if concert tickets are fake?
Do not judge by the appearance of an e-ticket. Verify that the sale came through the event issuer or its authorised resale partner, confirm the seller and restrictions, and ask the issuer whether the transfer method is valid. A barcode can be genuine but duplicated or already used.
Best Value
Is a resale site legitimate?
Start at the event’s official page and check whether it names the site as an authorised partner. Then read the listing and checkout for seller identity, seat, restrictions, total price, delivery and written dispute terms. A large audience or a “guaranteed” badge is not independent proof.
Should I buy tickets through Facebook or Instagram?
Do not treat a social-media profile or direct message as authorisation. Use social media only to locate the event’s verified announcement, then complete the purchase through the official or authorised channel. Never send an unknown seller a personal bank transfer or virtual currency.
Can I get my money back for a fake ticket?
Possibly, depending on your payment method, the provider’s rules, the seller’s location and the evidence. Contact the issuer and payment provider immediately, preserve records and report the listing. No recovery is guaranteed, and recovery-fee scams are common.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the safest way to buy a sold-out ticket?
Use an issuer-linked authorised resale service or an official waitlist and follow its transfer and refund rules. If the event provides no authorised resale route, waiting for an official release is safer than buying from an unverified individual.
