Make the first release small enough to finish, set a hard stopping time, review scope every week, schedule genuine time away from development, and stay connected to people who can challenge your assumptions.
Understand what burnout is before trying to fix it
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines burn-out in ICD-11 as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” It identifies three dimensions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Energy depletion or exhaustion: you feel persistently drained rather than normally tired after a productive day.
- Increased mental distance from the job: this can appear as cynicism, negativity, irritability, or emotional detachment from the project.
- Reduced professional efficacy: your sense that you can do the work declines, even when your skills have not suddenly disappeared.
WHO classifies burn-out as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical diagnosis. Those dimensions are useful warning signals, but they should not be used to diagnose every kind of distress or to explain symptoms that continue outside work.

Game-development talks from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) make a related distinction: exhaustion and overwork are visible symptoms, while occupational burnout also reflects the conditions producing them. For a solo developer, those conditions are usually embedded in the project itself—its scope, schedule, finances, workspace, task variety, and lack of backup.

Why solo development creates unusual burnout risk
A studio can distribute responsibilities among programmers, designers, artists, producers, testers, community staff, and support teams. A solo developer may perform all of those jobs in the same week. Context switching becomes a hidden workload: after debugging a rendering issue, you might write store copy, answer a player, create a trailer, reconcile expenses, and then return to code.
The project also has no natural stop signal. There is always another feature, a better animation, another platform, a social post, or a bug that could be fixed. When the same person owns the creative vision, schedule, income, and quality judgment, “one more task” can feel morally necessary rather than optional.
Industry discussions at GDC in 2023 and 2024 emphasize that individualized fixes alone do not solve systemic causes of burnout. A meditation app, productivity timer, or new chair cannot compensate for a release plan that requires impossible output. In a one-person project, changing the system means changing what you are making and the conditions under which you make it.
Make the first release finishable
Define a minimum shippable version
Write a short description of the smallest version that delivers the game’s core promise. It should name the playable loop, the necessary content, the target platform, and the basic quality bar. If removing an item leaves that promise intact, it does not belong in the minimum release.
For example, a compact puzzle game might require one input method, a complete tutorial, 20 carefully tested levels, save functionality, audio controls, and a stable build. It may not require a level editor, multiple characters, online leaderboards, three difficulty modes, or ports to every platform.
Keep this definition visible. When an idea arrives, compare it with the minimum release instead of asking whether it would be enjoyable to build.
Use a “later” list instead of an active backlog
Record attractive ideas in a separate later list with no commitment date. Do not place them beside tasks that must be completed for the current release. This preserves the idea without allowing it to consume the week.

Every addition has at least three costs: implementation time, testing and support time, and recovery time. Treat those costs as a tradeoff against the release date. A feature that appears to take two days may also add menus, save-state cases, balancing work, localization changes, and future bug reports.
Review scope on a fixed cadence
Hold a short scope review once a week, preferably on the same day. Ask:
- What can be removed without breaking the game’s core promise?
- Which task is blocking the most progress?
- What is the smallest testable next step?
- Has an estimate been wrong often enough that the milestone needs to shrink?
Do not wait for a crisis to rescope. A missed estimate is information about the plan, not evidence that you should silently add nights and weekends.
| Decision | Effect on scope | Effect on weekly workload | When it is appropriate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the feature now | No reduction | Workload remains within the agreed limit | It is essential to the core promise and has a tested, believable estimate |
| Defer to the later list | Protects the current release | Usually lowers near-term load | It improves variety or polish but is not required to understand or finish the game |
| Cut permanently | Shrinks the product | Reduces testing and support obligations | It creates disproportionate complexity or repeatedly blocks progress |
| Replace with a simpler version | Preserves the player-facing outcome with less machinery | Often lowers implementation and maintenance effort | The goal matters, but the proposed system is too expensive |
Set working boundaries that you can keep
Choose regular start and stop times
Pick a normal work window and write it down. A stopping time is more useful than an aspiration to “work reasonable hours,” because it creates a decision point before fatigue turns into automatic overtime. End-of-day alarms, a separate work account, or shutting down the development machine can make the boundary visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDefine an exception rule in advance. For example: an urgent release blocker may justify one additional session, but it must be recorded and followed by a shorter day or a full recovery block. Without a rule, every unfinished task becomes an emergency.
The IGDA Code of Ethics says developers should not commit to delivering more than they can reasonably achieve while maintaining quality of life. Applied to a solo project, that is a commitment to yourself: if the estimate cannot fit the boundary, change the scope or date rather than treating your health as the buffer.
Plan a week that rotates cognitive load
Do not fill every day with the most demanding programming or design work. Pair high-concentration tasks with lighter implementation, documentation, art cleanup, playtesting, build preparation, or administration. A lower-energy day can still move the project forward without turning recovery into another performance test.

| Day pattern | Primary work | Secondary work | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep-work day | One difficult system or level slice | Short documentation and shutdown note | Protects concentration by limiting context switching |
| Mixed day | Small implementation task | Art cleanup, audio integration, or bug triage | Provides progress when sustained problem-solving is difficult |
| Feedback day | Playtest and observe | Record issues without immediately expanding scope | Separates learning from impulsive feature work |
| Operations day | Builds, backups, store or community tasks | Light polish only | Prevents administrative work from invading every evening |
| No-development block | No game work | Sleep, movement, relationships, unrelated interests | Creates recovery that is not conditional on finishing a task |
The exact days and hours are personal. The important design choice is that demanding work, lighter work, and no-development time are all present on the calendar.
Measure progress by completed slices, not hours
Use outcome-based tasks
A small visible board should contain outcomes that can be demonstrated, such as “playable movement loop,” “tutorial tested by two people,” “save and load verified,” or “build uploaded.” Avoid using “work on combat” or “research marketing” as if they were finish lines; those phrases can expand indefinitely.
Limit the active board to a few items. A crowded board hides priorities and creates the feeling that nothing is complete. Move an item only when the defined outcome exists in a build, document, or decision.
Leave a restart note
At shutdown, write the next concrete action in one or two sentences: the file to open, the test to run, or the smallest change to make. This reduces the planning effort required to restart and makes stopping feel safe rather than like abandoning the project.
Track signals that reveal a bad plan
Useful measures include completed slices per week, the age of blocked tasks, the number of items repeatedly moved forward, and how often work crosses the planned stopping time. These are planning signals, not personal scores. If the same kind of task repeatedly overruns, revise the estimate or simplify the task.
Protect recovery, health, and relationships
Put non-game time on the calendar before the week fills. Sleep, regular meals, movement, and contact with people who are not dependent on the game’s success are maintenance requirements, not rewards for finishing the backlog.
Make at least some recovery genuinely unrelated to development. Watching a game while analyzing its interface may not provide the same rest as an activity with no production purpose. A walk, exercise session, meal with a friend, reading, or another hobby can interrupt the project’s constant feedback loop.

A GDC session about side-project rituals describes solo development as potentially restorative when it is bounded and chosen. That distinction matters: a project can be energizing when you control its limits, but the same activity can become harmful when it expands into every available hour.
Reduce isolation with deliberate outside feedback
Build a small feedback circle
Choose a peer group, accountability partner, mentor, or small tester circle. The goal is not to outsource creative decisions; it is to make assumptions visible. Ask reviewers to identify confusion, missing information, or scope risk rather than simply requesting general opinions.

Separate emotional support from project critique
Not every conversation needs to be about the game. Maintain at least one relationship where you can talk about your life without reporting progress. This protects your identity from becoming identical to the project’s performance.
Use professional safety principles
IGDA’s resources and code of ethics treat physical and mental safety and comfort as basic rights for developers. Even without a studio, you can apply that principle by making realistic commitments, asking for help early, and treating unsafe working conditions as a problem to change rather than a normal cost of independence.

| Signal | What it can look like | Immediate project response |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent exhaustion | You remain depleted after rest, dread starting, or need increasingly long hours to do ordinary tasks | Stop adding work, remove a milestone or feature, and schedule a real break |
| Mental distance or cynicism | You feel contempt for the project or players, avoid opening the build, or treat every task as pointless | Pause production decisions, speak with someone outside the project, and test whether the current scope or commercial pressure is the trigger |
| Reduced efficacy | Routine problems feel impossible, decisions stall, and your confidence drops despite evidence of prior competence | Return to one small, testable slice; reduce parallel work and seek an external review of the plan |
If two or more dimensions persist, reduce workload and scope immediately rather than trying to compensate with more discipline. Tell someone outside the project what is happening and take time away from development.
Best Value
Change root causes instead of buying temporary relief
Personal habits can support a healthier system, but they cannot cure a project that requires chronic overwork. GDC’s occupational-burnout material warns against relying on individualized fixes alone.
| Intervention | What it changes | Recovery time required | Root-cause impact | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cut or defer a feature | Project scope and testing burden | Often creates immediate capacity | High | High; the feature can remain on the later list |
| Move the release date with a smaller promise | Schedule pressure and weekly workload | Depends on the new plan | High | Medium |
| Set a hard stop and protect no-development blocks | Daily work conditions | Requires consistent calendar protection | High when enforced | High |
| Use a timer, app, supplement, or desk upgrade | Personal convenience or short-term focus | Little or none | Low | High |
| Take a genuine break | Immediate exhaustion and distance | Necessary when warning signs persist | Temporary unless the plan changes too | High |
| Add peer or tester support | Isolation and quality judgment | Small, scheduled coordination cost | Moderate to high | High |
Use the first three interventions when the schedule itself is unsafe. Use tools and routines as support, not as evidence that you should accept an impossible workload.
Handle marketing, money, and launch pressure explicitly
Marketing and social media can become a second game layered on top of development. Assign them a fixed weekly block with a defined outcome, such as one development update, a store-page revision, or a tester invitation. Do not allow an endless feed to determine your workday.
Separate launch-critical tasks from optional audience building. A stable build, clear store information, support contact, and a realistic release checklist may matter more than posting continually. If marketing demands more time than development can spare, reduce the launch plan or delay the release rather than silently extending every workday.
Financial pressure deserves its own decision. Write down the date by which the project must produce income or reach a funding milestone, then identify a fallback: contract work, part-time employment, a smaller commercial release, or a pause. A fallback is not an admission that the game failed; it prevents financial fear from dictating every creative choice.
A practical 30-day reset when you are already overloaded
- Day 1: Stop adding scope. Freeze new features and write the core promise in one paragraph.
- Days 2–3: Inventory the project. List active systems, unfinished tasks, external commitments, and launch requirements. Mark each item essential, deferrable, or removable.
- Day 4: Rebuild the milestone. Keep only the smallest set of items that can produce a complete, testable experience. Move everything else to the later list.
- Day 5: Set the boundary. Choose start and stop times, define the exceptional-crunch rule, and put no-development blocks on the calendar.
- Week 2: Work in slices. Complete one demonstrable outcome at a time. End each session with a restart note.
- Week 3: Test with outsiders. Run a bounded playtest and record observations separately from feature ideas. Look for evidence that the core loop is understandable.
- Week 4: Review the system. Compare planned and actual workload, identify recurring blockers, and cut or simplify anything that repeatedly causes overruns.
If the reduced plan still requires chronic overtime, the project is not yet small enough. Reduce the promise again, extend the schedule with a firm boundary, or pause development.
Know when to seek professional help
Burnout language should not conceal a serious health problem. Seek a qualified clinician or mental-health professional when symptoms are severe, prolonged, interfere with basic functioning, or extend well beyond work. If you feel unsafe or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact local emergency services or a crisis service immediately.
Professional support is appropriate even when the project is also part of the problem. A clinician can assess your symptoms; a scope review alone cannot. WHO’s occupational definition is not a substitute for diagnosis.
What evidence can—and cannot—tell you
There is no reliable solo-game-developer burnout prevalence percentage established by the sources discussed here. The IGDA Developer Satisfaction Survey covers a broader developer population, and GDC sessions discuss game development and studios generally. Neither supports a solo-only rate, so a precise percentage would be misleading.
The practical conclusion does not depend on a prevalence number. If your project repeatedly requires unsafe hours, isolates you, or erodes your sense of efficacy, change the project system before demanding more effort from yourself.
