Generate the updated file safely, then use a tested process to make FFmpeg consume it—typically a supervised restart at a suitable boundary—and verify that YouTube stays live. The workflow below covers playlist creation, ingest settings, monitoring, and the limits of YouTube’s long-stream archives.
What playlist automation can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered script of media files, and input looping can repeat that playlist. A separate scheduled job or file watcher can generate a new playlist when episodes are added. Those are distinct from making an already-running concat input reload a changed script: the FFmpeg documentation does not promise that behavior. Treat live reload as unverified unless you have tested it with your installed FFmpeg version and deployment.

The practical workflow has three parts: maintain an eligible media library, write a valid playlist, and deliberately get the active encoder to consume updates. Before depending on any approach, test whether it introduces a gap, ends the YouTube session, or recovers cleanly after failure.

Build a concat playlist
Use the ffconcat format
Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat. If you use the recognized ffconcat format, put its header on the first line, exactly as shown:

file '/path/to/episode-002.mp4'Use paths that exist on the host running FFmpeg. Relative paths within a safe directory are preferable. The -safe 0 option permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules; omit it when you can use safe paths, and add it only when your setup requires it.
Keep the media compatible
The concat demuxer expects inputs with matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If episodes differ, normalize them to a consistent stream layout before adding them, or re-encode the output rather than stream-copying incompatible inputs. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across concatenated files, but inaccurate duration metadata can produce gaps or artifacts. Test transitions between episodes, including audio continuity and timestamp behavior, with representative files.

Automate playlist updates safely
- Choose eligible files and their order. Have a scheduled job or file watcher build the playlist from episodes that are ready to play. Exclude incomplete uploads and temporary files.
- Write a complete replacement. Write the new contents to a temporary file, then replace the prior playlist atomically where the operating system permits. This prevents FFmpeg or another reader from encountering a half-written script.
- Make FFmpeg consume the update. Since automatic reload is not established, test a controlled restart—ideally at an episode boundary—or another supervised process handoff. Check whether YouTube continues the same live session or viewers experience an interruption. Do not rely on a restart method until it has been tested with your stream configuration.
- Observe and recover. Run FFmpeg under a process manager or equivalent restart logic, capture logs, and alert when the process stops or reports encoder errors. The right supervisor and reconnect behavior depend on your host and deployment; test them rather than assuming they work.
Compare refresh strategies before choosing

Judge each option by clean episode boundaries, interruption risk, implementation complexity, and failure recovery. No one refresh method is established as universally reliable.

Send the loop to YouTube Live
Configure YouTube and protect the key
Create or configure a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use the stream URL and stream key supplied for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public playlist, published example, shell history, or logs. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that your selected codecs and output protocol are accepted by your current stream configuration.

Choose the output settings for the actual stream
YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings table for your combination rather than copying a generic bitrate. YouTube also recommends testing upload capacity with a speed test.
A representative command shape is below. Replace the paths and credentials locally, and verify option support against your installed FFmpeg release. This is an implementation pattern, not a command tested against a particular media library or FFmpeg build.

It does not set a bitrate or keyframe interval, so configure those explicitly to match YouTube’s current recommendations and your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and upload connection. If safe relative paths work for your playlist, remove -safe 0. Keep the stream key in a protected runtime configuration or secret store rather than embedding it in a shared script.

YouTube advises testing before going live, checking audio and video that resemble the real program, monitoring stream health, and verifying that the local archive is growing. For a 24/7 setup, include these failure cases in your test plan:

- Adding an episode and refreshing the playlist, including the transition into the new list.
- An FFmpeg crash followed by a supervisor restart.
- A network interruption and recovery.
- A YouTube live session ending, and what your process does afterward.
- Episode boundaries with representative audio, video, and duration metadata.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for current ingest settings and stream management for its live-stream workflow. Keep logs useful for diagnosis without exposing credentials.
Plan for archives and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable archive strategy: maintain a separate local recording plan and decide whether to split or restart sessions if YouTube archives are important to you. For very long broadcasts, YouTube also says rewind may be limited and DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If listeners expect to pause or rewind a round-the-clock podcast, explain this limitation and consider publishing episode recordings separately. Details can change; check YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
