Use Puppeteer’s bundled Chrome for Testing, then capture the page with page.screenshot(). On Windows, a “headless error” can mean anything from a missing browser download to a Chrome policy or sandbox permission problem, so start by checking the exact launch error rather than changing flags at random. This guide follows Puppeteer’s documentation marked v25.12.0; requirements and remedies may differ in older projects.
Capture a page screenshot with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project; installing the puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and a chrome-headless-shell binary. The default launch is headless. This CommonJS example opens a page, waits for networkidle2, writes a PNG, and closes Chrome even if navigation or capture fails:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Save it as screenshot.js and run node screenshot.js. Change the URL and output filename as needed. Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide demonstrates navigation, networkidle2, saving to a path, and closing the browser. Check the screenshot options supported by your installed Puppeteer version if you use fullPage.

Choose when the page is ready
networkidle2 is a useful starting point, not proof that every dynamic component has rendered. Pages that continue making network requests may not reach that condition promptly; other pages may load their key content after it does. If the screenshot misses content, wait for a page-specific selector with page.waitForSelector('YOUR_SELECTOR') before calling page.screenshot(). Choose a selector that appears only when the content you need is ready.

Capture just one element
For an element-only image, find the element and call its screenshot() method:
const element = await page.$('YOUR_SELECTOR');
if (!element) throw new Error('Screenshot target was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
Replace YOUR_SELECTOR with a CSS selector from the page. Puppeteer documents that an ElementHandle screenshot attempts to scroll a hidden element into view.
Check Windows and browser setup first
Match the current documented requirements
Puppeteer’s system-requirements page marked v25.12.0 lists Node 22.12 or later and Windows x64 for Chrome for Testing. It also identifies tar.exe or PowerShell as needed to unpack Chrome for Testing unless the optional yauzl dependency is installed. These are the requirements stated for that current documentation version, not a promise about older projects or other platforms. See Puppeteer system requirements.

Confirm that Puppeteer can find its browser
By default, installing puppeteer downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and headless-shell binary. Puppeteer guarantees operation with its bundled browser; using a separately installed Chrome is possible, but an arbitrary executable may not be compatible. Only set executablePath or channel if you have a specific reason to manage the browser yourself. See installation and the LaunchOptions interface.
If the error says Puppeteer cannot find its browser, check whether installation completed and whether the project uses a custom executable or cache path. Since Puppeteer v19.0.0, browsers are downloaded to ~/.cache/puppeteer by default, under the user’s home directory. If that location is unavailable or unsuitable, set PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR to a writable cache directory. Puppeteer configuration also supports an explicit cache directory and executable path; see the configuration guide.
Pick the right headless mode
Headless mode is not automatically the cause of a launch error. Puppeteer currently launches in modern headless mode by default, equivalent to { headless: true }. The mode choices have different purposes:
| Launch setting | What it does | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
{ headless: true } or the default |
Uses regular Chrome’s current headless functionality. | Normal automated capture without a visible browser window. |
{ headless: false } |
Opens a visible Chrome window. | Debugging startup or watching what happens during navigation. |
{ headless: 'shell' } |
Uses the separate chrome-headless-shell binary, corresponding to old headless mode. |
Potentially faster automation when the full Chrome feature set is unnecessary; its behavior does not completely match regular Chrome. |
Switching to 'shell' is a mode choice, not a general Windows repair. For the current distinctions, see Puppeteer headless mode.

Diagnose a headless launch failure on Windows
“Headless error” is not a single diagnosis. Record the error and environment before changing launch settings:
- Copy the full error output.
- Record the Puppeteer and Node.js versions, launch options, and whether the browser is bundled or external.
- Check the installed browser’s cache location and any custom executable path.
Then use the symptom to choose a targeted fix.
Chrome policy enforces extensions
Puppeteer passes --disable-extensions by default. The troubleshooting guide documents that some Chrome policies enforce extensions and can cause launch failure in that situation. If that matches your managed Windows environment, try enabling extensions explicitly:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ enableExtensions: true });
This option addresses that documented policy conflict; it is not a general-purpose launch flag. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.
Sandbox access is denied
Chrome’s Windows sandbox needs appropriate permissions on downloaded Chrome files. Starting with Puppeteer v22.14.0, Puppeteer attempts to configure these permissions by running Chrome’s setup.exe during browser installation. If you use an older version or still see an access-denied error, the troubleshooting guide documents this command for the default cache location:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →icacls "%USERPROFILE%/.cache/puppeteer/chrome" /grant *S-1-15-2-1:(OI)(CI)(RX)
Before applying it, confirm the actual cache path; a custom cache directory changes the target. The documentation cautions that high-security environments should use a more restrictive SID, such as one provided by the installer. Follow your organization’s security policy rather than broadening access without checking.
Chrome starts, but page loading or capture fails
If Chrome launches but the capture is blank or incomplete, distinguish browser startup from page readiness. Enable visible mode to watch navigation, check the target URL and selector, and use a page-specific wait if the required content appears after the initial network activity settles. A timeout during navigation is not, by itself, evidence of a Windows headless launch problem.
See Chrome’s startup logs
For diagnosis, launch a visible browser and forward Chrome’s output to the Node.js process:

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without installing and diagnosing a local browser, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. The cURL example below saves a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Keep captures reliable and costs predictable
- Use a matching browser. The bundled Chrome for Testing is the compatibility baseline; a separate executable gives you control but introduces compatibility risk.
- Wait for the content you need. A network-idle condition is only one loading signal. A selector tied to the target content can be more appropriate for dynamic pages.
- Close the browser in a
finallyblock. This keeps the example from leaving a browser process open after a navigation or screenshot error. - Keep permission changes narrow. Verify the cache path and security requirements before applying the documented sandbox command.
- Do not treat every failure as a headless-mode issue. Browser installation, Windows policy, sandbox permissions, page readiness, and DevTools failures call for different diagnosis.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page is community-maintained, and its documentation notes that its currency depends on contributions. Match its Windows guidance to your installed versions and the error you actually see.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer need a visible Chrome window to take a screenshot?
No. Puppeteer launches in headless mode by default; set headless: false when you need to inspect the browser during debugging.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan Puppeteer take a screenshot of one element instead of the whole page?
Yes. Find it with a selector and call ElementHandle.screenshot(); Puppeteer attempts to scroll a hidden element into view.
Is networkidle2 a guarantee that a page has finished rendering?
No. It is a navigation wait condition, not a universal guarantee that dynamic content is ready. Wait for a selector associated with the content you need when appropriate.
