On a Linux server, run your encoder as a systemd service, enable it at boot, and set a restart policy so the process can recover from failures. Then verify both the service and the stream in YouTube Studio: a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
Before configuring automatic restarts
Confirm your channel can stream live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and confirm access before scheduling a reboot test. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Choose a host and encoder that fit your stream
FFmpeg is one option for looping prerecorded music and visuals from a headless Linux machine; it is not the only possible encoder. You can use an existing Linux PC or server, a Linux VPS, or a small Linux computer such as a Raspberry Pi-class system. Choose based on the encoding workload, storage for your media, network reliability, power use, and how much maintenance you can handle. A VPS shifts hardware maintenance away from home but has its own CPU, storage, transfer, and monthly-cost limits. The available VPS example uses Ubuntu, but it does not establish a provider or current price. A Raspberry Pi project example likewise does not establish encoding capacity for a particular board or stream format.

Those depend on your OS, hardware, source formats, output settings, and the options shown for your YouTube stream. Test a command suited to your setup before automating it; do not copy a configuration without checking its paths, credentials, and resource demands.

Set up YouTube ingest securely
Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- For encoder streaming, copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into your encoder’s configuration. The key acts like a credential: keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs. Reset it if it is exposed.
- If using YouTube’s encrypted ingest, select and copy the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; do not assume you can create an RTMPS address by changing the text of an RTMP URL. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and RTMPS guidance.
Keep the stream URL and key in a protected configuration source accessible to the service account that runs the encoder. Avoid embedding the key in a command or unit file that may be readable by other users or copied into logs. The exact secure method and file permissions depend on how your server and service are administered.
Run the encoder automatically after reboot
Test the media command before creating a service
First run your encoder command interactively and confirm it can read the media, connect to YouTube’s ingest server, and send a usable feed. For a looped prerecorded stream, check that the intended video and audio repeat as expected. Resolve missing files, invalid credentials, incompatible formats, or resource problems before adding boot automation.

Create and enable a systemd service
Create a service unit that launches the tested encoder command with the right working directory, source files, and protected key configuration. Configure restart behavior appropriate to the service so systemd can relaunch the encoder after a process failure. Then enable the unit for the machine’s normal boot target; the systemd FAQ explains boot activation through a unit link in the multi-user.target wants directory. Exact unit syntax, user-versus-system service choice, permissions, and restart policy depend on the host. See the systemd FAQ.
Community implementations document running FFmpeg under systemd and checking it with systemctl and journalctl; an Ubuntu VPS example also shows a restart policy. Treat such configurations as examples, not universal requirements or guarantees. A restart policy can recover from encoder process failures, but it cannot by itself fix a missing media file, bad key, broken network, or a YouTube-side problem.

Check status and logs
After installing and enabling the service, start it and inspect its state and recent logs:
systemctl status your-service-nameshows whether the service is active and reports its recent state.journalctl -u your-service-namedisplays logs for that unit; use the options appropriate to your system if you want to follow new entries live.
Replace your-service-name with the unit’s actual name. Look for errors such as unreadable media, permission failures, connection problems, or rejected stream credentials. A status of active is useful, but it is not proof that YouTube is publishing a healthy stream.

Test recovery end to end
- Start the service and inspect its status and logs for startup errors.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the preview and stream status look healthy.
- Perform a controlled server reboot while someone can check the result.
- After the machine returns, check the service status and logs again, then confirm in Live Control Room that the restarted encoder is sending a feed and the broadcast is publishing as intended.
Local process activity can miss a YouTube-side freeze: community operations notes describe cases where the process continued while the stream had stopped progressing. This is why both service supervision and an end-to-end YouTube check matter. Watchdog checks or scheduled restarts appear in individual implementations, but the available examples do not establish a universally necessary schedule or a recovery guarantee.

Protect music rights and plan for long broadcasts
Confirm rights before leaving the stream unattended
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say creators represent and warrant that they have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if protected material continues. Even a licensed creator may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to the Content ID allowlist.

Calling a broadcast Indian music, owning a copy of a song, or subscribing to a music service does not by itself establish the rights to rebroadcast it live. Confirm that your permissions cover the music, visuals, territories, and public livestream use. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
Do not assume one archive will cover 24 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold does not establish that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete archive. Check current Live Control Room and archive behavior for your channel, and decide whether to create periodic stream boundaries if you need separate recordings. The available guidance does not settle a single best segmentation schedule. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded music playing on YouTube without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploaded quality is kept up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
