For a crash, use an external watchdog or scheduled launcher to reopen OBS, then pass the --startstreaming launch parameter if you want OBS to begin streaming immediately. Test the full recovery path before relying on it for a broadcast.
First, tell a stream disconnect from an OBS crash
If OBS is still open but its connection to YouTube or another streaming server has dropped, use OBS’s built-in automatic reconnect. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the Automatically Reconnect controls. These apply while OBS is running; they do not relaunch a process that has exited. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

If OBS has closed, frozen and been terminated, or otherwise stopped running, an external process must detect that and launch it again. OBS’s own launch options can tell it to start streaming when launched, but OBS does not document a universal, complete crash-watchdog setup. See the OBS Launch Parameters guide.
Set up crash recovery with an external launcher
The exact watchdog or scheduled-task steps depend on your operating system and how you run OBS. The general arrangement is: monitor the OBS process, launch OBS when it is no longer running, and decide whether that launch should also start the stream.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Choose the right OBS configuration. Identify the profile, scene collection and scene you want OBS to use after recovery. OBS launch parameters support selecting a profile, collection and scene; consult the launch guide for the parameter syntax that matches your installed version.
- Configure an external supervisor. Use an operating-system scheduler, watchdog or other process supervisor that can start OBS after it exits. The supervisor must run independently of OBS; a script hosted only inside the crashed OBS process cannot relaunch it.
- Set the executable and working directory. Point the launcher to the OBS executable and set its working directory to the folder containing that executable. OBS explicitly calls out the working directory for scheduled tasks and other automated launches.
- Decide whether recovery should go live automatically. Add
--startstreamingto the OBS launch command if you want streaming to begin as OBS opens. The flag starts OBS’s streaming output; it does not establish that the selected scene, microphone, destination or remote platform is ready. - Build in safeguards. Consider a short launch delay, a bounded number of retries, logging, and protection against multiple OBS instances. These are prudent design choices, not settings prescribed by OBS. Avoid an unlimited restart loop if OBS repeatedly crashes.
- Test the whole recovery path. In a controlled, non-public test, confirm that the supervisor detects OBS exiting, starts the intended configuration, and—if enabled—starts the output. Also verify at the streaming destination that the stream actually arrived. Repeat under the login and desktop-session conditions in which the system will normally operate.
Automatic streaming is not appropriate for every podcast. If a crash might leave a private scene, muted microphone, unfinished recording or wrong destination selected, require a person to inspect OBS before going live rather than using --startstreaming.
Use OBS WebSocket for monitoring or control—not process recovery
OBS WebSocket can let an external controller interact with a running OBS instance and observe output-state events such as stopped, reconnecting and reconnected. It cannot, on its own, relaunch OBS after the application process has ended; pair it with an operating-system-level supervisor if process recovery is needed.

WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28.0.0. The OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide describes using it to automate or control scenes and sources with external tools. Protect the connection with authentication: the obs-websocket project README recommends keeping it password-protected against unauthorized control.
Account for operating-system and session limits
Do not assume that a task configured to launch OBS will behave identically in every session. Whether OBS can start unattended behind a locked desktop, after a reboot, or without a logged-in interactive user depends on the host operating system, graphics environment and launcher configuration. The OBS launch guide does not provide a universal cross-platform recipe for those conditions. Verify the behavior on the specific computer and OS you plan to use.

A power interruption is a different failure from an OBS process crash. A UPS may help keep a computer powered through some interruptions, but it does not restart OBS after a software crash. If a reboot is part of the recovery path, separately configure and test the operating system’s startup behavior and the OBS launcher.
Troubleshoot the underlying failure before restarting repeatedly
Repeatedly reopening OBS will not fix an unstable connection to the remote ingest server. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends investigating the connection, including trying another server or lowering the bitrate where appropriate.

- OBS remains open; output disconnects: Check automatic reconnect in Settings > Advanced, then diagnose the network and server path.
- OBS exits unexpectedly: Check OBS logs and the conditions immediately preceding the exit. Confirm that the external supervisor—not OBS itself—is responsible for relaunching the process.
- OBS reopens but does not stream: Verify the launch command includes
--startstreamingif automatic output is intended, and confirm the selected profile, scene collection, scene and streaming configuration. - OBS repeatedly opens and crashes: Stop or limit retries, inspect the underlying failure, and only resume unattended recovery once the cause is understood.
- OBS says it is streaming but the destination is unavailable: Treat the remote connection as a separate failure; a successful process launch is not proof that the platform accepted the stream.
A June 26, 2026 OBS forum post reports a crash under a specific combination—OBS Studio 32.1.2 on Windows 11, SRT output, Stream Delay enabled, and network recovery before the first automatic reconnect attempt. This is a user report for those conditions, not confirmation of a general defect or an established fix: the forum report.
