To make Windows automatically delete old files, use Storage Sense: it can clear temporary files and, if you choose, remove Downloads files that have not been opened for a set period and empty items from the Recycle Bin after a chosen retention time. The other built-in options—OneDrive file management, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup—serve different purposes: making cloud files online-only or helping you review files to remove manually.
Which Windows cleanup option should you use?
Choose based on whether you want a recurring rule or a one-time, reviewed cleanup. Storage Sense is the closest match to automatic, age-based deletion, but it is limited to specific categories and the Windows system drive; it is not a general sweep of every folder or drive.

| Disk Cleanup | No; review and select | Removes selected temporary and system-file categories | Must be run manually |
1. Set Storage Sense to remove old Downloads and Recycle Bin items
Storage Sense can run on a schedule or when Windows detects that the device is low on disk space. By default, it cleans temporary files and eventually removes items in the Recycle Bin, but it does not delete files from Downloads unless you enable that rule. The retention settings apply to the current user.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
- Turn on Storage Sense, then choose how often it should run or whether it should run when the device is low on space.
- Set how long items may remain in the Recycle Bin before removal.
- Set how long a file in Downloads may go unopened before Windows deletes it, if you want Downloads cleanup. Leave this rule off if Downloads contains files you may need to keep.
In Windows 10, open Storage settings and use the Storage Sense configuration link. The exact navigation and wording vary by release, so check the labels shown on your version of Windows.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive

Storage Sense affects the Windows system drive, not every drive attached to the PC or arbitrary folders you choose. It also needs you to be signed in and online for more than 10 minutes to run. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions for current settings details.
2. Make inactive OneDrive files online-only
If OneDrive files are taking up local disk space, Storage Sense can remove their local copies after a period of inactivity while leaving the files in OneDrive. This is a space-saving change, not permanent deletion: the file remains in the cloud and can be downloaded again when you have a network connection.

Configure the OneDrive or cloud-content controls within Storage Sense if you want this behavior; cloud files are not automatically managed by default. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from being made online-only. Microsoft’s guide to OneDrive and Storage Sense explains the distinction.

Cleanup recommendations helps you inspect categories that may contain removable data, such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations where available, review the listed items, and select only what you want removed. Because you decide what to clean, this is a manual review—not a recurring rule that deletes files solely by age.

4. Use Disk Cleanup for a one-time removal
Disk Cleanup lets you choose temporary and system-file categories to remove. Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, open it, choose the drive, and select the categories you want to clear. If you need system-file categories, choose Clean up system files and review the available selections before confirming. Disk Cleanup is a manual, category-based tool, not a scheduled old-file deletion system.

Before deleting a previous Windows installation
After a Windows upgrade, the previous installation can be removed to reclaim space, but doing so ends the option to roll back to that earlier version. Microsoft says Windows automatically deletes the previous version 10 days after an upgrade; removing it earlier cannot be undone. Use Disk Cleanup or Storage settings only after you are sure you will not need to return to the previous Windows version. See Microsoft’s instructions for deleting a previous version of Windows.

Age-based cleanup is convenient, but a file can be old and still important. Review Downloads before enabling deletion, and keep a separate copy of important personal files. Microsoft suggests moving files to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card; an external drive can serve as an archive, though it does not automate cleanup.
