DOCSIS describes the modem’s connection to the cable network; the router connects to the modem over Ethernet. The key checks are whether your provider approves the exact modem for your location and plan, and whether the router can handle your internet speed.
First, identify which kind of device you have
People often use “router” to mean any box that provides home internet, but the distinction matters here. A standalone router has an Ethernet WAN or Internet port and relies on a separate modem to connect to the cable network. A cable gateway combines a modem and router in one device.

Separate router
With a standalone DOCSIS 3.1 modem, connect the modem’s Ethernet port to the router’s WAN or Internet port. The router does not need a DOCSIS rating: it does not communicate with the provider over coax. NETGEAR describes this modem-to-router Ethernet setup for its CM3000 DOCSIS 3.1 modem.

A DOCSIS 3.0 gateway contains a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem as well as router functions. The gateway’s router portion does not turn its built-in modem into DOCSIS 3.1. For example, TP-Link identifies the Archer CR500 as a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem/router gateway and marks it End of Life on its product page.

If you want DOCSIS 3.1 service, the straightforward arrangements are a provider-approved DOCSIS 3.1 modem plus a separate router, or a provider-approved DOCSIS 3.1 gateway. Avoid assuming that an existing gateway can serve as the router while its built-in modem is replaced in an ordinary one-modem setup.
Check provider approval before buying or connecting a modem
DOCSIS compatibility alone does not establish that a provider will activate a particular modem. Approval can depend on the exact model, service tier, location, and provider policy. Check the provider’s current approved-device list or ask support to confirm the specific model against your plan. Policies can change, so do this close to the time of purchase or activation.

Provider guidance illustrates why a general rule is not enough. WOW!’s customer-owned device guideline, updated November 29, 2023, says customers are responsible for ensuring their device is compatible with WOW! service, permitted on its network, and capable of delivering their subscribed speed. That document is for WOW!’s business service; it should not be treated as a universal policy or as current guidance for another provider. See the WOW! customer-owned device guideline.
Connection does not guarantee the speed you pay for
Even if the modem is approved and the router connects, a slower port or limited router capability can bottleneck the connection. Compare your plan speed with the modem’s Ethernet port and the router’s WAN port; then account for the router’s processing and Wi-Fi capabilities. Wireless interference, distance, client devices, and network conditions can also affect observed speeds.

NETGEAR’s comparison, last updated July 7, 2025, lists standard maximums of 1 Gbps downstream and 200 Mbps upstream for DOCSIS 3.0, and 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream for DOCSIS 3.1. These are technology maximums, not a promise of household speeds or a guarantee about any particular modem. Your provider’s plan and equipment, the wired or wireless connection, and network conditions determine what you can actually receive. See NETGEAR’s DOCSIS 3.0 versus 3.1 comparison.
Port speed is a concrete specification to verify. Motorola’s MB8611 technical specifications describe a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with one 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet LAN port. That does not establish provider approval or a particular service speed; check those separately, along with the router’s WAN port.

- 🔌 MODEM ONLY - NO WIFI INCLUDED - This device is a cable modem with ONE Ethernet port only. It does NOT provide WiFi or wireless connectivity. You MUST connect your own separate WiFi router to this modem to create a wireless network. This is not an all-in-one gateway or combo unit.
- ⚡ DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY: Latest cable standard with 32x8 channel bonding for reliable multi-gig speeds. Backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 networks. Eliminates monthly modem rental fees (typically $14-20/month). For CABLE internet only - verify compatibility with your cable provider.
Use this checklist to decide whether to keep your router
- Read the device label or model number. Determine whether you have a standalone router or a cable modem/router gateway. A coax connection and a model described as a cable gateway indicate that the device includes a modem.
- Confirm the modem’s exact model is approved. Check your provider’s current list for your location and plan, or ask the provider directly. Do not assume that every DOCSIS 3.1 modem is accepted.
- Check the Ethernet link. Confirm the modem’s Ethernet port and the router’s WAN port can support your subscribed speed. A port slower than your plan can cap wired throughput.
- Assess router capacity and Wi-Fi needs. The router may work but still be the limiting component, particularly for faster plans or demanding wireless use. Replace it only if its ports, performance, coverage, or features do not meet your needs.
- Confirm telephone service requirements. If your cable package includes provider voice service, verify that the modem supports that service. For example, NETGEAR says its CM3000 is not compatible with certain bundled voice service on its product page.
What to expect when you set it up
Once you have a provider-approved modem and a suitable router, connect the modem to the cable outlet and connect its Ethernet port to the router’s WAN or Internet port. Follow the provider’s activation instructions for the modem, then use the router’s normal setup process. If the router has multiple Ethernet ports, use the one explicitly labeled WAN or Internet for the modem connection.

- ⚠️ NO WiFi, NO Voice, NO Router Features: This device ONLY connects to your cable line and provides ONE Ethernet port. It does NOT create WiFi networks, has NO phone/voice capabilities, and cannot connect multiple devices without a separate WiFi router.
- 🔧 REQUIRED FOR SETUP: (1) Cable internet service (not fiber), (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation call. Without a router, you can connect only ONE device via the single Ethernet cable included.
- 💰POTENTIAL RENTAL FEE SAVINGS - While some providers have reduced or eliminated modem rental fees, this modem can still provide cost savings and performance benefits. Check with your provider about current rental fees before purchasing.
- DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY - Supports cable internet speeds UP TO 1 Gbps with advanced DOCSIS 3.1 performance. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and multiple devices when paired with your WiFi router.
Choosing the right upgrade
If the provider requires DOCSIS 3.1 or your current modem cannot support the subscribed plan, look for a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem that is approved for your exact service. Treat model examples as starting points, not universal recommendations: approval, voice support, port speed, and availability vary. You do not need to replace a working separate router merely because the new modem is DOCSIS 3.1; replace it when its WAN port, performance, or Wi-Fi no longer fits your needs.
