LambdaTest’s Screenshot API lets you submit a website URL and a browser-and-screen configuration to a hosted screenshot test, then retrieve the test status and screenshot details using the returned test_id. The repeatable workflow is: prepare your account credentials, check the currently available operating systems, browsers and resolutions, submit a test, and fetch its results.
How the LambdaTest Screenshot API workflow works
The API starts a hosted screenshot session rather than requiring you to launch browsers locally. A successful start request returns a test_id. Use that ID to retrieve the test status and its screenshots, including each capture’s operating system, browser, version, resolution, status and image URLs.

Keep account credentials out of code
The API uses HTTP Basic authentication. Obtain your LambdaTest username and access key from your account, then store them as environment variables rather than committing them to source control or embedding them in scripts.

Query current browser and resolution availability
Use the OS/browser-combination and resolution availability endpoints documented in LambdaTest’s Automated Screenshot API guide before building a matrix. The guide’s examples include older browser versions; treat them as examples, not proof that those targets remain available. The inventory, supported values, request schema and service behavior can change, and the cited documentation does not state a publication date.
Choose operating systems, browser families and versions, and screen resolutions based on the browsers your audience uses and the parts of your interface that need coverage. A wider configuration matrix can result in more individual captures; the number depends on the configurations submitted.
Start a screenshot test
The API reference documents POST https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/ with Basic authentication and a JSON request body. The request can include url, configs, defer_time, email, mac_res, win_res, tunnel, tunnel_identifier, username, password and callback_url. For target-site Basic authentication, the latter username and password fields are distinct from your LambdaTest API credentials.

Use the current schema and inventory values in the LambdaTest API reference when constructing configs. The available source material does not establish a complete current configuration schema, so do not copy old browser-version values or assume a configuration shape without checking the reference.
This cURL request starts a test for a URL using the API’s documented endpoint and your API credentials. Add the current configs structure required for the browser matrix you selected, as documented in the API reference.

Fetch screenshot status and metadata
After submission, fetch the test details with GET /screenshots/v1/{test_id}. The API reference’s example response contains a top-level test_status and a screenshots array. Each screenshot record can include OS, browser, browser version, per-screenshot status, screenshot and thumbnail URLs, activity ID, and resolution.

In an automated workflow, preserve the ID and inspect the returned status before treating the capture as complete. Use the screenshot and thumbnail URLs from the response to retrieve or display the resulting images.
The documented result endpoint and response fields are in the LambdaTest API reference. Do not assume every screenshot succeeds merely because the test session was created; check the overall and per-screenshot statuses.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Authentication fails: Check that the username and access key are the LambdaTest API credentials, that both environment variables are populated in the running process, and that the Basic-auth header is being sent. Keep credentials out of logs.
- A requested browser or resolution is rejected: Query the current inventory endpoints and update the configuration to use values currently offered by the service. Do not rely on old guide examples.
- The start request does not return a usable test ID: Inspect the HTTP response and JSON error details, verify the endpoint, and validate the JSON against the current start-request reference.
- The test starts but a capture reports a problem: Check both
test_statusand each screenshot record’s status. Use the returned OS, browser and resolution fields to identify which configuration needs attention. - The target site requires Basic authentication: Supply the site’s credentials using the documented target-site fields, not the LambdaTest account credentials. Protect those values as secrets as well.
- Results are not ready when first fetched: Retain the
test_idand fetch details again, or use the documented callback option where appropriate. Follow the status values actually returned by the API.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
The hosted workflow avoids managing browser installations on the client machine, but the API material cited here does not establish capture-time guarantees, uptime, account limits or pricing. Check your account and current LambdaTest documentation for those details rather than budgeting from an assumed rate.
