Capture a screenshot inside a Selenium test
Selenium captures the state of its current browsing context when the screenshot call runs. Navigate first, wait for the intended content to render, then capture at that point in the test. The exact method signature varies by language binding; Selenium’s documentation shows saving a screenshot to a PNG path and returning screenshot data, including base64 in some bindings: Selenium WebDriver screenshots.

Ordinary WebDriver screenshot behavior should not be assumed to produce a full-page image in every browser and binding; check the target browser and binding if you need full-page output. Close the driver as part of normal test cleanup.
Retrieve screenshots from a completed LambdaTest session
If the Selenium test ran on LambdaTest and you want its session step screenshots afterward, use the session identifier with the vendor’s session screenshot endpoint. It requires Basic authentication and returns a URL for the screenshots in ZIP format. This retrieves artifacts from a session; it does not control when Selenium captures a screenshot during test execution. Run URL-based screenshots across a browser matrix
For a URL-driven cross-browser run, the Automated Screenshot API takes a POST request containing the target URL, screen resolution fields, and a configs matrix of operating system, browser, and browser version. The vendor describes this service as capturing full-page screenshots of URLs through an API call to its cloud servers. This is separate from a Selenium test: you do not use WebDriver to navigate or interact with the page in this workflow. See the Automated Screenshot API guide.

Set credentials and discover supported configurations
Store your LambdaTest username and access key as environment variables rather than putting credentials directly in source code. The API guide documents Basic authorization and provides endpoints to discover available OS/browser combinations and resolutions. Query those endpoints when you prepare a matrix: browser versions shown in documentation examples are examples, not a dependable current compatibility list.
Submit the screenshot request
Build the JSON request with the current configuration values returned by the vendor’s discovery endpoints, then POST it to the screenshot endpoint using Basic authentication. The guide’s required request fields include the URL, resolution fields, and configs. Its examples show the request format and endpoint; use those current vendor examples rather than copying old browser-version values into a production job.
Read results by test ID
Retain the test ID returned when you start a run. The result endpoint reports status and requested URL, along with records that identify the OS, browser, browser version, status, screenshot URL, thumbnail URL, activity ID, and resolution for each configuration. Use those fields to match an image to its exact matrix entry and to distinguish completed results from unsuccessful ones.

- Stop a running test: the guide documents a PUT request to stop a screenshot test while it is running. A stop attempt against an already completed session returns HTTP 404.
Use SmartUI for visual regression
Choose SmartUI when the goal is to compare repeatable snapshots across builds, rather than simply save an image. The Selenium Java guide describes creating a SmartUI project, configuring browsers and viewports, and calling SmartUISnapshot.smartuiSnapshot(driver, "<Screenshot Name>") after navigation. Use a stable snapshot name so the image can be matched to its baseline, then review builds and mismatches in the SmartUI project. The guide also describes selectors for including or excluding dynamic DOM content from comparison; these are SmartUI-specific capabilities, not ordinary WebDriver screenshot options. The guide’s sample configuration names Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, but that example should not be treated as a current support guarantee. Check the live configuration options before fixing a browser matrix.

The Selenium screenshot is blank or misses an element
The capture reflects the page state at the moment the method executes. Wait for the target element or application state rather than relying only on navigation completion; then capture. If the page depends on delayed content, make the wait specific to that content.
The image is not full-page
Do not assume a standard WebDriver screenshot is full-page across browsers and bindings. If full-page URL capture is the objective, use the documented Automated Screenshot API workflow or confirm that the specific browser/binding has a supported full-page method.

The requested browser version is unavailable
Do not infer current availability from old examples. Query the vendor’s supported OS/browser combination endpoint and resolution endpoint, then construct the matrix from the returned options.
A stop request returns 404
The API guide notes that stopping a completed screenshot test returns 404. Check the test status first; only send a stop request while the test remains in progress.

The API run cannot reach a local page
For a locally hosted application, include the documented "tunnel": true setting and configure the tunnel as required by the vendor. For an HTTP Basic Authentication-protected page, include the documented page credentials rather than assuming the cloud job shares your local browser’s login state.
Choosing for reliability and cost
Keep the execution model aligned with the artifact you need: WebDriver capture ties the image to a known point in a test; the URL API produces per-configuration records for a browser matrix; SmartUI organizes named images around baseline comparison. The cited implementation documentation does not establish a universal runtime, success rate, or per-screenshot price for these LambdaTest workflows, so check current account terms and API documentation before budgeting or setting timeouts.
