For captures that must run unattended at set times, use the SingleFile command-line tool and launch it with your operating system’s scheduler. For pages already open in a persistent browser, SingleFile’s extension can auto-save tabs after they load—but that is not a documented way to launch a browser on a schedule.
Choose the workflow that matches the job

SingleFile’s CLI is a separate tool from its browser extension. The CLI package describes execution through Deno as a script injected into a headless browser: Chromium-based browsers use Chrome DevTools Protocol, while Firefox uses WebDriver BiDi. SingleFile’s output is a single HTML file, rather than a screenshot.

Set up unattended captures with the CLI
- Install the CLI and browser on the machine that will run the job. Follow the current SingleFile CLI instructions and install a supported browser. The package listing says Chrome or a Chromium-based browser should be available in its default location; if it is elsewhere, the CLI may need its
--browser-executable-pathoption. - Run a manual test before scheduling. Consult the installed CLI’s current help and documentation for the command and flags for your version. The package page could not be verified here, so no universal capture command is supplied; use the syntax shown by the tool you install rather than guessing flags. Confirm the page is saved to the destination you expect.
- Choose a stable output location. Use a directory the scheduled task’s user can write to. Decide how recurring captures should be named or organized, and check that the destination has enough free space.
- Create a scheduled task that launches the tested command. Use your operating system’s scheduler and its own syntax for the desired interval. Set the task’s working directory and execution account deliberately; scheduled processes may not inherit the same environment, permissions, or browser configuration as an interactive terminal.
- Capture logs and check outcomes. Redirect or otherwise record standard output and errors using your scheduler’s facilities. Treat a nonzero exit as a failed run, and verify that the expected HTML file exists and is not empty.
- Review the job periodically. Browser updates, changed page behavior, expired logins, destination permissions, and low disk space can affect future runs. Recheck the CLI/browser combination on the target machine after significant changes.
The exact scheduler setup differs by operating system, and a successful manual capture does not prove every scheduled run will succeed. Authentication and site-specific behavior also need to be validated for the pages you intend to archive.
Use extension auto-save for an existing browser session
SingleFile’s project README describes auto-save choices in the extension’s context menu: the current tab, unpinned tabs, or all tabs. Pages are saved after loading, or before unloading if they have not yet been saved. This is useful when the browser session is open and the tabs themselves are the capture targets.

The extension’s Chrome Web Store listing says to wait until a page is fully loaded before manually saving. It describes a complete-page HTML file that can include CSS, images, fonts, and frames. The listing showed version 1.28.0, updated October 2, 2026; that is the Chrome listing’s state on that date, not a universal version number for every browser. Check the installed extension’s options and help for current behavior and defaults.
Do not treat extension auto-save as a system scheduler: the official documentation describes saving tabs in a browser, not launching a closed browser at a chosen time. If the browser must start and capture without an active user session, use the CLI-and-scheduler approach.

Understand where captures go
SingleFile’s core result is one HTML file. Its project documentation lists optional Google Drive and GitHub destinations for the extension; the Chrome listing also names Dropbox and WebDAV. These are documented extension destinations, not guarantees that every destination is available in every browser build or configuration. For a scheduled CLI job, verify the supported output and destination options in the current CLI documentation before designing a workflow around them.

Why Chrome Headless flags are not a SingleFile replacement
Chrome Headless offers its own capture-related command-line features, but they produce different artifacts. The official reference says --dump-dom prints the serialized DOM after Chrome parses the page and runs scripts; it is not simply the original HTML source. Chrome also documents screenshot and PDF output, a timeout that controls when DOM, screenshot, or PDF capture occurs, and virtual time for time-dependent page scripts.

Those features may help with browser automation, but they do not make a self-contained SingleFile archive. If your required output is a SingleFile HTML capture, use SingleFile CLI. Chrome’s Headless reference was last updated October 21, 2024 UTC; check its current flag names and behavior before building a job around them. The page notes that the PDF header/footer flag changed in earlier Chrome versions.
