To find MCP servers your platform team does not know about, compare the approved inventory with evidence from the places servers may be configured, deployed, or invoked. A registry can show what has been listed or ingested; it does not, by itself, prove that every server in developer settings or infrastructure has been found.
First distinguish a catalog from a use inventory
The official MCP Registry is a metadata repository for publicly accessible servers. It provides a way to discover listed servers, but a listing is not proof that your organization uses one, and the absence of a listing does not prove that no server is configured internally. The MCP project’s September 8, 2025 announcement describes an open catalog and says organizations can create subregistries, including private ones, using the specification.

An enterprise catalog answers a different question: which servers this organization has registered, synchronized, or made discoverable to clients. Neither a public directory nor an enterprise catalog automatically establishes what is actually configured or running across every repository, developer environment, and workload. Describe your coverage by naming the sources you inspect and synchronize.

The following checks are a practical method for finding inventory gaps. Their coverage depends on your organization’s repositories, clients, environments, and logging—not on a registry feature alone.

- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
- Define the scope. List the teams, repositories, developer environments, deployment platforms, and client applications in scope. Record which sources you can inspect and which you cannot.
- Search code and configuration. Review relevant repositories and approved locations for client configuration that names an MCP server or points to its endpoint. Include local server launch settings and remote server URLs where those are used. Keep the search within authorized repositories and configuration stores.
- Inspect deployment environments. Check the infrastructure and deployment sources available to your team for server processes, services, or endpoints that may host MCP servers. Record the environment and evidence for each candidate rather than assuming that a configuration entry is currently running.
- Review invocation evidence where available. Use existing telemetry or audit records to identify observed server calls. Telemetry can reveal use that a configuration search misses, but its usefulness depends on what is logged, retained, and attributable.
- Compare candidates with the approved inventory. Match by server name, endpoint, transport, owner, and environment where those details are available. Treat an unmatched item as an investigation lead, not automatically as an unauthorized or active server.
- Assign ownership and review status. Give each candidate an accountable team or person, evidence source, observed status, and review outcome. Route unapproved or unclear cases through your normal security and platform processes.
- Register approved servers and maintain synchronization. Add approved entries to the chosen catalog and keep supported source integrations current. Repeat the checks on a schedule appropriate to how often your configuration and deployments change.
What registry approaches document—and what they do not
| Approach | Scope and ingestion | Client discovery and governance | Coverage limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| MCP Registry | Metadata for publicly accessible servers; the project describes namespace management and standardized server.json metadata. |
Offers a REST API for discovery. The project says organizations can build subregistries on the open specification. | A public listing is not an organization’s deployment or use inventory. The documentation describes the registry as focused on namespace authentication and metadata hosting, not security certification or code scanning. |
| Azure API Center | Microsoft documents registering local and remote servers and synchronizing inventory from Azure API Management and Git repositories. | Supports browsing and filtering, optional access management, and an MCP registry endpoint for compatible clients; endpoint metadata includes server name, URL, and transport type. | Coverage depends on what is registered or synchronized and how the service is configured. It does not establish exhaustive detection of settings or running workloads. |
| Google Cloud Agent Registry | Google documents manual registration of external servers and automatic ingestion of supported official Google and Google Cloud remote servers when the relevant supported API is enabled. | Provides discovery and management of MCP servers and tools. Project setup and appropriate permissions are required. | Automatic ingestion applies to specified supported services, not arbitrary external servers. An inventory entry alone does not prove actual use. |
These are documented examples, not an exhaustive product survey or a universal recommendation. Check each provider’s current availability, supported integrations, permissions, and client compatibility before relying on it. Choose based on the sources you need to cover and the governance workflow you can operate.
Make coverage and review status visible
A useful inventory should let a reviewer distinguish a registered server from one observed in configuration or telemetry. The exact fields depend on your catalog, but consider capturing:

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
- Server name, endpoint or local launch reference, and transport when known.
- Owning team or individual, plus the repositories, environments, or clients in scope.
- Evidence source and observation date, with a clear status such as configured, deployed, observed in use, or approved.
- Review state and the next action for entries that are unmatched, unowned, or awaiting assessment.
- Sources synchronized into the catalog and the parts of the organization they do not cover.
These fields make an important distinction legible: “not observed in inspected sources” is a statement about coverage, not proof that a server does not exist.
Include security review without treating registration as approval
The NSA has published MCP security design considerations, which are relevant context for organizations reviewing server enrollment. A registry entry is metadata and discoverability—not, by itself, evidence that a server’s code or behavior has been security-reviewed. Define the review and approval steps in your organization’s process, and record their status separately from registration.
