Its unusually wide interface moves data at high throughput in a compact footprint, making HBM a memory option for demanding systems such as AI accelerators and high-performance computers. It works alongside system memory such as DDR or LPDDR; it does not simply replace it.
How HBM is built
An HBM stack contains multiple DRAM dies, sometimes above a logic or base die. TSVs carry electrical connections through the silicon layers, while microbumps connect the dies. The stack sits close to a compatible processor in the package, allowing many parallel connections across a wide interface. Micron describes this architecture in its HBM product FAQ.

That design differs from conventional DDR memory, which generally uses a narrower interface at high clock speeds. HBM instead relies on a highly parallel, wide interface. The exact implementation varies by generation and product. Micron also presents HBM’s short connections and proximity to the processor as supporting lower energy per transferred bit; that efficiency comparison is a vendor claim, not a guarantee for every system or workload.

What bandwidth and capacity mean
Capacity is how much data memory can hold. Bandwidth is how quickly data can move between memory and the processor. A system can have substantial capacity but still be constrained by data-transfer speed, or high bandwidth but insufficient capacity for its workload. Neither figure alone establishes overall system performance.

Manufacturer specifications illustrate how much HBM figures depend on the product and configuration:
| Generation and product | Vendor-stated capacity or configuration | Vendor-stated bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| Micron HBM3E | 24 GB at 8-high or 36 GB at 12-high | Over 1.2 TB/s per placement |
| Micron HBM4 | 2,048-pin interface | Over 2.8 TB/s per stack |
| Samsung HBM4, listed 12-high product | 36 GB | Up to 3,300 GB/s per stack |
These are vendor figures, not universal HBM performance ratings. The figures may not be directly comparable unless generation, stack height, configuration, and measurement basis are aligned. See Micron’s HBM3E specifications, HBM4 specifications, and Samsung’s HBM family specifications.

How HBM differs from DDR and LPDDR
HBM is not a plug-in memory module for an ordinary desktop or laptop. It is packaged for use with a compatible processor and system design. DDR and LPDDR remain useful for other system memory needs, and they can coexist with HBM in one computer. Micron describes systems in which CPUs use DDR5 or LPDDR5 alongside a GPU’s HBM.

|---|---|---|
| HBM | Very wide, parallel interface and high bandwidth in a compact stacked package | Used with compatible processors in demanding compute systems |
| DDR or LPDDR | Conventional system-memory designs; DDR uses a narrower interface than HBM | Can serve CPU memory needs alongside a GPU or accelerator using HBM |
This is an architectural distinction, not a claim that one type is always faster or better for every task. The useful choice depends on the processor, package, workload, capacity needs, and full system design. Micron discusses HBM alongside other memory in its HBM overview.

Where HBM is used
Manufacturers position HBM for workloads that can benefit from moving large amounts of data quickly, including AI training and inference, scientific computing, modeling and simulation, data-intensive analytics, supercomputing, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise data centers. These are target use cases, not a promise that HBM alone will determine an application’s speed. Processor design, software, memory capacity, and other system components also matter. Micron outlines these use contexts in its HBM product information.
How to interpret HBM product claims
When comparing specifications, first make sure the products belong to the same generation and compare equivalent configurations. Check:
- Stack capacity: the amount of data a stack can hold.
- Bandwidth and data rate: the throughput claim and the vendor’s stated units and measurement basis.
- Stack height: for example, 8-high or 12-high, where disclosed.
- Power and thermal details: the claim’s comparison baseline and conditions, if provided.
- System compatibility: whether the processor and package are designed for that HBM product.
Availability claims also have dates. Samsung reported that it began mass production and commercial shipments of its HBM4 on March 13, 2026, and stated up to 3.3 TB/s per stack; that status refers to Samsung’s product and the date of its announcement, not every HBM4 product.
