Wireless electric vehicle charging transfers power from a ground-side unit to a receiver in the vehicle across an air gap, usually by magnetic coupling between coils. The car still needs compatible onboard hardware; “wireless” means no charging cable plugs into the vehicle.
What wireless EV charging means
Wireless EV charging, also called wireless power transfer (WPT), moves electrical energy from a charging assembly on or beneath the ground to equipment fitted to the vehicle. The common approach uses magnetic coupling: a transmitting coil in the ground unit creates a magnetic field, and a receiving coil in the vehicle captures energy from it.

This is not remote charging without hardware in the car. A compatible ground assembly, vehicle receiver and power-conversion electronics are all required. The vehicle also needs to be positioned within the system’s supported alignment range.
How the charging process works
- Power conversion at the ground unit: The ground-side equipment converts grid electricity into high-frequency alternating current.
- Magnetic energy transfer: That current energizes the transmitting coil, creating a magnetic field across the air gap.
- Reception and battery charging: A coil on the vehicle receives energy from the field. Vehicle-side electronics convert it to direct current for the traction battery. The precise electronics and coil design differ by system.
What the SAE J2954 standard covers
SAE International identifies SAE J2954_202408, revised August 13, 2024, as its standard for stationary wireless charging of light-duty vehicles. It defines three charging levels up to 11 kVA and sets criteria for interoperability, electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic-field exposure, minimum performance, safety and testing. Its scope includes private, home and public charging, and this revision covers above-ground surface installations.

The standard also addresses alignment methodology to support interoperability. Flush-mounted ground installations are planned for a future revision, as is bidirectional power transfer; neither should be treated as covered functionality in the current revision.
Stationary charging is not charging while driving
J2954_202408 covers stationary light-duty charging: the vehicle is parked over or near the ground-side assembly. Charging while a vehicle moves on a road is dynamic wireless power transfer, a separate area of future work in the light-duty scope. The existence of standards work or a technical demonstration does not mean public roads routinely provide dynamic charging.

Heavy-duty vehicles have separate standards work. SAE J2954/2_202212, issued December 16, 2022, addresses higher power levels for heavy-duty EVs. SAE describes it as an initial step toward requirements for heavy-duty stationary and dynamic WPT, with field data still needed for specific requirements and solutions. Heavy-duty systems should not be assumed interchangeable with light-duty J2954 equipment.
What high-power demonstrations show—and do not show
Laboratory demonstrations show that wireless transfer can operate at powers above the light-duty standard’s stated levels, but they are not consumer-product specifications. Oak Ridge National Laboratory reported these separate results:

These figures come from different systems and configurations, so they are not a matched comparison or a prediction of typical charging speed or efficiency in a consumer installation.

A vehicle needs a suitable receiver and controls, and the site needs a compatible ground assembly. The system’s alignment tolerance and the vehicle’s position affect whether charging can take place. A regular EV does not become wirelessly chargeable simply by parking over a wireless pad, and the evidence does not establish a universal retrofit kit.

The clear difference is the connection: wireless systems eliminate the act of plugging a cable into the vehicle, while plug-in systems use a conductive connector. A meaningful comparison of charging time, efficiency, alignment tolerance, installation needs, safety certification or installed cost requires matched systems and test conditions; the cited sources do not provide that consumer-product comparison.
