I found 5GB to reclaim in my Google Photos account, but that is my account-specific result—not a typical amount or a promise that every cleanup will free space. The useful first step is to check what Google’s storage manager says counts toward your shared account quota, then decide whether to delete files or compress eligible originals.
Start in Google Photos’ storage manager
On a computer, open Google Photos and go to Manage your storage. The page summarizes account storage and can surface review categories such as large photos and videos. Select only items you recognize and no longer need; Google’s documented flow is to select them and move them to trash. The manager may estimate how much quota a selection will recover.

On Android or iOS, look in Google Photos settings under Backup for Manage storage. Labels and paths can vary by platform and account. Google’s instructions are in its storage manager help.
Check whether Photos files are using quota
Google Account storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so a Photos cleanup is only one part of the total. Google’s current help guidance says an account includes up to 15 GB of storage; this is an included amount, not a guarantee of how much remains available on a particular account or plan. See Google’s backup and storage guidance.

Whether a Photos backup counts can depend on its quality and date. Storage saver (formerly High quality) and Express uploads backed up before June 1, 2021 do not count toward account storage. Original quality backups count regardless of when they were uploaded. Consequently, deleting an older exempt upload may remove it from your library without increasing available quota. Google explains the policy in its Photos storage activity help.
Choose between deleting files and compressing originals
There are two distinct routes to recover cloud space. The right one depends on whether you want to remove media or keep it while accepting reduced quality. Either route can help only when the affected media counts against quota.

| Option | What changes | Quality and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Delete selected items | The items move to trash and are removed from your Photos library. | Quota is recovered only for items that count toward storage. Deleted items remain in trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. |
| Convert existing Original quality uploads to Storage saver | Eligible existing uploads are compressed rather than deleted. | Resolution can be reduced; the conversion can be used to recover storage once per day, and some items are ineligible. |
Delete only what you are ready to lose
Review the selection and confirm you have any copies you want to keep before moving files to trash. Google says: “Photos and videos that you delete will stay in your trash for 30 days before they are permanently deleted.” (Google Photos Help, Delete photos & videos.) Deleted items are also removed from devices that have Google Photos installed and backup turned on. This is a library deletion, not simply a way to hide photos or clear phone storage.
Convert eligible uploads when keeping the library matters more
Google lets you convert existing Original quality uploads to Storage saver to reduce their storage use. Storage saver may resize photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p; these are thresholds, not a guarantee of a particular result for every file. Some formats cannot be compressed and remain at original size. Google limits this storage-recovery conversion to once per day. The change applies to existing uploads when you invoke it; it does not change your future backup-quality setting. Compare the choices in Google’s backup quality help.

Keep cloud cleanup separate from phone cleanup
Free up space on this device is a separate Android feature. It removes local copies of backed-up photos and videos from the phone while leaving them viewable in Google Photos online. It targets device storage, not Google Account cloud quota. Check Google’s Android device-space instructions before using it.

My reported 5GB is an individual result, not a benchmark for other accounts. To make a before-and-after claim meaningful, record the account’s storage reading before and after cleanup, note the date, and say whether the figure is total shared Google Account storage or Photos-only usage. If the account remains over quota after deleting or converting eligible files, Google lists more storage through Google One as another option; check the account’s current plan details before choosing it.
