Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

To limit who can trigger changes, use individual accounts, narrowly scoped roles, and a review step for sensitive production changes. Treat flag permissions as controls over rollout configuration—not as a replacement for application authorization.
What a useful feature flag audit trail should show
A log is useful only when it supports attribution and review. Check that an event identifies the actor, timestamp, target flag or other resource, and enough change detail to determine what was changed. Search should help reviewers narrow events by relevant dimensions such as user, time, project, environment, flag, or event type.

LaunchDarkly calls its interface “Change history” (formerly audit log) and documents history for flags and other resources within an environment. Its Audit Log API exposes recorded changes and documents filters such as date ranges, resources, full-text query, member, and access token. LaunchDarkly Change history LaunchDarkly Audit Log API

Unleash describes its Event Log as listing instance events. Its documentation describes filtering by date range, event type, project, flag, and user, as well as CSV and JSON export; Admin access is required for the full event log. Unleash Events

Limit production changes with scoped access and review
Separate environments and projects
Map development, test, staging, and production environments, then identify which flags or changes carry significant user, operational, or security impact. Grant permissions at the narrowest supported scope: a developer may need broad ability to experiment in development without needing direct permission to alter production behavior.
Unleash documents root and project roles, custom roles, and environment-specific access patterns. One documented example gives developers full access in development while allowing them to submit a request rather than directly change production. Exact role behavior depends on edition and configuration, so verify the controls in the deployment you operate. Unleash role-based access control Unleash environments and projects

Require approval for high-impact changes
Where direct production toggle rights would be too broad, use a change request or another review workflow. Preserve who requested the change, who reviewed it, and who applied it; the final decision should be traceable in the flag platform’s event history or a connected change-management record. Set up an auditable control workflow
- Inventory flags and boundaries. Record which environments are non-production and production, identify their owners, and mark changes that require review.
- Use named individual accounts. Do not share accounts. Unleash event documentation describes a
createdByfield containing the email of the user who triggered an event; individual identities make that attribution actionable. Unleash Events - Assign the minimum necessary role. Give people the access needed for their project and environment, not blanket production mutation rights. Where supported, permit production change requests without permitting direct changes.
- Route material production changes through review. Capture requester, reviewer, and implementer, and ensure the resulting decision can be found in the platform or its linked change record.
- Test the evidence and export path. Inspect real event records for actor, time, target, and useful change detail. Try the filters and API or export format your reviewers will use, then verify the exported data remains intelligible.
- Review membership periodically. Compare project and role assignments with current responsibilities and remove access that is no longer needed. Unleash includes access reviews in its security guidance. Unleash security guidance
- Confirm retention and preservation. Check how long the records you need remain available and whether exports or external preservation are required for your obligations.
Verify retention, plan, and product-specific behavior
Do not assume that an audit page is a durable long-term record. LaunchDarkly states that change-history availability and account-event retention depend on plan, and documents a 30-day limitation for some account-change history. Confirm current plan entitlements and retention for the specific event types you rely on, then decide whether to preserve logs elsewhere. LaunchDarkly Change history

Vendor features are examples, not interchangeable guarantees. When assessing any feature-flag service, verify event detail, searchable dimensions, export or API access, retention, role scope across projects and environments, and whether production review can be required. Labels, availability, and plan limits can change; check the current service configuration and documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep feature rollout separate from authorization
A flag controls whether a release or experience is rolled out; it should not be the sole check protecting sensitive data or privileged operations. As an engineering control, enforce access to protected resources in the application’s authorization layer even when a feature is hidden or disabled. The documented flag-management roles govern configuration changes, not a substitute authorization model.
