Start by defining the flexibility you need
Before applying or interviewing, write down the conditions that would make the job workable. Flexibility can concern hours worked, start and finish times, days worked, or work location; an employer may offer choice in one area but not the others. GOV.UK outlines these different forms of flexible working in its overview of flexible working.

- Your required weekly hours and any minimum income you need.
- The earliest time you can start and the latest you can finish.
- Which days you can work, and whether those days need to be fixed.
- How often you can attend a workplace, and any commute limits.
- How much advance notice you need if your schedule changes.
- Whether another pattern could meet your needs if your first choice is not possible.

Look for role-specific details, not just a label
A general claim such as “flexible working available” does not tell you what you can choose. The Office for Equality and Opportunity’s recruitment guidance recommends that employers give examples—such as remote work or flexi-time—and explain their approach. Its guidance on advertising flexible working applies to England, Scotland and Wales.

Use the advert to distinguish between possible arrangements. These are practical distinctions, not legal definitions:
- Part-time describes reduced hours; it does not by itself mean you choose when those hours fall.
- Hybrid indicates a mix of workplace and non-workplace working, but does not establish that you choose your office days.
- “Flexible working considered” signals that a conversation may be possible; it is not confirmation that a particular pattern is agreed.
Try to find out whether the arrangement is already part of the role, can be negotiated with the hiring manager, or would only be considered later through a formal request. If the advert says nothing about flexibility, do not assume it is unavailable: JobHelp advises candidates to contact the employer and ask whether it is open to flexible working.

Compare what two “flexible” jobs actually offer
Assess each role against the same practical criteria rather than comparing labels. A simple comparison can reveal where one job gives you control and another merely offers a limited accommodation.

Ask direct questions in the interview
Specific questions make an advertised claim testable. You can adapt these to the arrangement you need:
- “What does flexible working mean for this specific role?”
- “Which hours, days or attendance requirements are fixed, and which can I choose?”
- “How many days on site are expected, and can that requirement change?”
- “Are there core hours when I must be available?”
- “How much notice is usually given when working patterns change?”
- “How are requests handled, and who makes the decision?”
- “Could we try the proposed pattern for an agreed period and review it?”
- “If we agree a pattern, can it be included in the written offer or employment terms?”
Do not treat a trial as something every employer must provide. The Acas Code of Practice says discussions should explore a request and alternatives, and notes that a trial period may help assess whether an arrangement is feasible where appropriate. Know what the legal right to request does—and does not—mean
In England, Scotland and Wales, an employee can make a statutory flexible-working request from their first day in a job. GOV.UK says, “Employees can make a request for flexible working from their first day in a job.” The request may concern hours, start or finish times, days worked or work location. This is a right to ask for an arrangement, not a guarantee that the employer will agree to it or that every role can accommodate it. Northern Ireland has different rules; see the GOV.UK overview.
Under GOV.UK’s application guidance, an employer must discuss an application with the employee before refusing it and decide within two months unless both sides agree to extend the period. An employer can refuse a request for a good business reason. If the employer accepts the request, it must change the employee’s terms and conditions.

Get an agreed arrangement recorded
A positive interview answer is useful, but it may not settle the terms. Before making decisions based on a particular pattern, confirm what was agreed and check the written offer and employment terms. Clarify:
- the exact hours and days;
- the agreed work location and on-site attendance;
- how much notice applies to schedule changes;
- any review date or trial period, if agreed; and
- whether the arrangement is part of your terms or is governed by a policy that may change.
Where you are relying on flexibility to accept the job, ask for the arrangement to be stated clearly in the offer or employment terms. A statutory request made after starting is distinct from a working pattern already agreed as a condition of the job.
