The disciplined way to assess Micron before buying shares is to connect four items: memory demand and pricing, the quality of margin expansion, cash generated after capacity investment, and the valuation implied by several possible points in the memory cycle. Fiscal 2026 was exceptionally strong, but a single peak quarter is not a valuation model. Start with the reported numbers, test management’s next-quarter outlook, then value the company under bullish, base-case, and downcycle assumptions.
Start with the reported fiscal 2026 results
Micron’s fiscal 2026 results establish the baseline for any model. The figures below are GAAP unless identified as adjusted or non-GAAP.

| Q4 revenue | $54.229 billion | Compare with the prior quarter and the year-ago quarter to identify current growth momentum. |
| Q3 revenue | $41.456 billion | Provides the sequential comparison for Q4. |
| Q4 fiscal 2025 revenue | $11.315 billion | Provides the year-over-year comparison for Q4. |
| Full-year revenue | $133.188 billion | Use as the scale of the business, not as a normalized mid-cycle estimate. |
| Full-year GAAP net income | $84.969 billion | Compare with operating cash flow to test earnings quality. |
| Full-year GAAP diluted EPS | $74.33 | Use as a historical reference; do not automatically carry a peak-cycle EPS figure into a downcycle case. |
| Operating cash flow | $89.68 billion | Shows cash produced by operations before capital investment. |
| Net capex | $27.37 billion | Measures the cash required for capacity and technology investment after capital proceeds. |
| Adjusted free cash flow | $62.31 billion | Use with Micron’s stated non-GAAP definition and reconcile it to operating cash flow less net capex. |
| Ending cash, marketable investments and restricted cash | $73.48 billion | Provides liquidity context when evaluating capex, debt and cycle risk. |
Q4 revenue rose from $41.456 billion in Q3 and from $11.315 billion in Q4 of the previous fiscal year. That growth is important, but it does not by itself show whether the increase came from more bits shipped, higher average selling prices (ASPs), favorable product mix, or a combination. The next step is to separate those drivers.
Decompose revenue into bits, prices and mix
Memory revenue is unusually cyclical because suppliers can add capacity while customers adjust inventory. A sound earnings review therefore asks three questions in sequence.

1. Did bit shipments increase?
Bit growth measures the amount of DRAM or NAND memory shipped, independent of the price per bit. Rising shipments can indicate genuine demand, qualification wins or a new capacity ramp. However, shipments can also rise temporarily when customers rebuild inventories. Look for management’s disclosed bit-shipment growth, customer inventory commentary and evidence that new products are moving from qualification into volume production.
2. Did ASPs increase?
ASP growth is often the fastest contributor to a memory company’s earnings expansion. It can be positive when supply is disciplined and demand is strong, but it can reverse quickly when inventories build or suppliers compete for share. Ask whether the reported price improvement applies broadly across DRAM and NAND or is concentrated in a constrained product such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). A narrow, shortage-driven increase deserves a lower valuation multiple than a broad improvement supported by contracts and balanced supply.
3. Did product mix improve?
Mix can lift revenue and gross margin even when aggregate bits grow modestly. HBM, advanced server memory, high-capacity solid-state drives and newer process generations may carry different economics from commodity products. Separate mix effects from underlying pricing so that a temporary premium product allocation is not mistaken for a permanent company-wide margin level.
When management does not quantify each driver, record what is disclosed rather than filling the gap with an estimate. The objective is to explain the quarter, not to force every change into a precise decomposition that the company has not provided.
Test whether margins are durable
Gross-margin expansion is valuable only if it can survive a less favorable memory market. Compare the latest margin with the cause of the improvement: pricing, utilization, product mix, manufacturing cost, technology transition or one-time items. A margin that depends mainly on a temporary spot-price spike should be modeled differently from one supported by long-term customer agreements, higher-value products and lower cost per bit.
Q4 segment economics
| Segment | Q4 gross margin | Q4 operating margin |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Memory | 83% | Not stated in the cited Q4 segment disclosure |
| Core Data Center | 90% | 85% |
| Mobile and Client | 90% | 88% |
| Automotive and Embedded | 84% | Not stated in the cited Q4 segment disclosure |
Core Data Center produced the highest reported operating margin at 85%, while Mobile and Client reported 88%. Both had 90% gross margins. Cloud Memory’s 83% gross margin and Automotive and Embedded’s 84% show that segment economics are not uniform, so a consolidated margin forecast should reflect the expected mix rather than simply extrapolate the best-performing businesses.

Separate gross margin from operating leverage
Gross margin reflects revenue less cost of goods sold. Operating margin also includes research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative costs. If operating margin expands faster than gross margin, fixed-cost leverage may be contributing; if gross margin expands while operating expenses rise sharply, the improvement may be less durable. Track both measures each quarter and identify whether the change is volume-driven, mix-driven or expense-driven.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP EPS
Use GAAP diluted EPS as the primary accounting result, then build a bridge to non-GAAP EPS rather than replacing one with the other. Micron says its non-GAAP measures exclude specified activities and may not be comparable with non-GAAP measures used by other companies.
- Begin with GAAP net income and diluted shares. Confirm the share count used in diluted EPS, including the effect of stock compensation, convertibles or other potentially dilutive securities.
- List every adjustment. Identify the amount and description of stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition-related items, amortization or other exclusions shown in the earnings reconciliation.
- Recalculate the bridge. Add back only the disclosed adjustments and divide by the appropriate diluted share count. The result should match the company’s non-GAAP reconciliation within rounding.
- Keep forecasts separate. Maintain distinct GAAP and adjusted columns in your model. A non-GAAP forecast should not be used to present a GAAP valuation multiple.
The purpose of the bridge is not to declare one measure universally superior. Recurring compensation or recurring restructuring can make an apparently “adjusted” result economically important, while a genuinely unusual charge may be reasonable to isolate. The decision depends on the nature and frequency of each item.
Check cash conversion and the cost of growth
Profit is more credible when it converts into cash after the investment required to produce future memory. In fiscal 2026, Micron generated $89.68 billion of operating cash flow and spent $27.37 billion on net capex, consistent with its $62.31 billion adjusted free-cash-flow figure under the company’s stated non-GAAP definitions.
Use this sequence each quarter:
- Compare operating cash flow with net income. A large, persistent gap requires an explanation in working capital, taxes, inventory, receivables or other operating items.
- Subtract net capex, including the cash cost of fabs, equipment and technology transitions. Gross capex and net capex are not interchangeable; document which definition your model uses.
- Compare free cash flow with the company’s adjusted figure and reconcile any difference caused by its non-GAAP policy.
- Assess liquidity after investment. Ending cash, marketable investments and restricted cash totaled $73.48 billion at fiscal year-end, but cash is not excess capital if it is committed to capacity, customer obligations or working capital.
High capex can create profitable capacity when demand is durable, yet it also raises utilization and execution risk. In a downturn, depreciation and committed projects can continue after selling prices fall, so model capex with a lag rather than assuming it can be cut immediately.

| Q1 fiscal 2027 measure | Guidance | How to test it after the quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion | Compare actual revenue with the midpoint and explain any variance through bits, ASPs and mix. |
| GAAP gross margin | Approximately 85.95% | Check whether the result reflects sustainable product mix and manufacturing execution or a temporary price benefit. |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | Approximately 86.25% | Reconcile the difference from GAAP using the company’s disclosed adjustments. |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $37.84, plus or minus $1 | Compare actual EPS with revenue, margin, operating expenses, interest, taxes and diluted shares. |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $38.15, plus or minus $1 | Check the adjustment bridge instead of treating the non-GAAP figure as interchangeable with GAAP EPS. |
After the release, classify an upside or miss by its source. Beating revenue because of volume is different from beating it because of a short-lived price spike; beating EPS through lower expenses is different from doing so through stronger gross margin. Also verify that operating cash flow is keeping pace with accounting earnings.
Chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said, “Micron delivered record fiscal 2026 results, and we expect an even stronger fiscal 2027.” Treat the second clause as a hypothesis to test against bookings, customer agreements, supply additions, realized margins and cash generation. It is an outlook, not proof that the cycle will remain favorable.
Use product milestones as operating evidence, not earnings guarantees
Micron has identified several milestones that can help investors monitor execution:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- HBM production and customer qualification for artificial-intelligence workloads.
- Server DDR5 and registered dual in-line memory module (RDIMM) qualifications.
- PCIe Gen 6 and high-capacity SSD shipments.
- Ramps of products based on the 1-gamma process generation.
Qualification demonstrates that a product has progressed through a technical or customer-approval stage; it does not necessarily mean that material revenue has been booked. For each milestone, ask when volume shipments begin, what capacity is available, what yield or cost assumptions apply, and whether the economics differ from the products being displaced.
Build a three-case valuation instead of one target price
Memory stocks can look inexpensive on peak earnings and expensive on trough earnings. A three-case model makes that cyclicality visible.
Bull case
Assume Q1 guidance is met or exceeded, premium AI-memory mix persists, and new capacity produces profitable growth. Your assumptions should specify bit growth, ASP trends, gross margin, operating expenses, tax rate, capex and diluted shares. The bull case is a test of execution and demand, not a default forecast.

Base case
Assume guidance is achieved, margins normalize gradually rather than remaining at a peak, and free cash flow stays positive after elevated investment. Use a transition path for ASPs and mix rather than dropping margins from a peak directly to a trough in one period.

Assume DRAM and NAND prices weaken, mix becomes less favorable, margins compress toward historical-cycle levels and capex declines with a lag. Include the possibility that inventory, customer commitments and depreciation keep cash flow below accounting earnings during the adjustment.
Calculate three complementary multiples
- Forward GAAP P/E:
share price ÷ forecast GAAP diluted EPS. Use a normalized or downcycle EPS when testing whether the multiple is misleading at a peak. - EV/EBITDA:
(market capitalization + debt − cash and investments) ÷ forecast EBITDA. Keep the treatment of restricted cash and investments consistent across cases. - Price-to-free-cash-flow:
market capitalization ÷ forecast free cash flow. State whether free cash flow is GAAP-derived or adjusted under Micron’s definition.
Use diluted shares in every case and keep GAAP and adjusted forecasts in separate columns. Do not publish a target price unless the model shows explicit assumptions for memory pricing, bit growth, gross margin, tax, capex and dilution. A target that changes only because the share price changed is not an operating thesis.
No synchronized market price and analyst-consensus estimate is established in the official materials used for these fiscal results, so a current multiple or target price cannot be stated responsibly here. Insert the live price and a dated consensus estimate only when both are captured at the same time and their definitions are clear.

Memory pricing reverses
DRAM and NAND prices can change faster than a supplier can adjust capacity. Stress-test gross margin and free cash flow for lower ASPs and less favorable mix instead of extrapolating Q4 margins indefinitely.
Capex does not earn its return
Large projects create execution, timing and utilization risk. Compare capex with operating cash flow every quarter and ask whether demand supports the planned output. A delayed ramp can leave depreciation and financing costs ahead of revenue.

Technology milestones slip
HBM, 1-gamma, DDR5 and SSD qualifications may be delayed, yield-constrained or less profitable than expected. Treat each as evidence of progress, then verify volume shipments, realized pricing and margins.
Customer concentration and contract terms matter
Strategic Customer Agreements can improve demand visibility, but they may also create concentration, delivery obligations and pricing constraints. Review the latest 10-K and 10-Q for customer exposure, commitments, cancellation provisions and the economics of those agreements. The investor-relations archive identifies the fiscal Q4 2026 10-K as the latest annual filing.
Management outlook differs from realized results

Compare Micron with another memory company on the same cycle assumptions
A peer comparison is useful only when the periods and definitions match. Use the same fiscal quarter or year and normalize the following axes:
- DRAM, NAND and HBM exposure.
- Bit-growth rates and ASP trends.
- Gross margin and operating margin.
- Capital-expenditure intensity relative to revenue and operating cash flow.
- Free-cash-flow conversion.
- Customer concentration and contractual commitments.
- Cash, investments, debt and other liquidity measures.
- Valuation under a common bullish, base and downcycle framework.
Differences in fiscal calendars, accounting definitions, product mix and capex timing can make an apparently cheaper peer look attractive for the wrong reason. Reconcile those differences before drawing a conclusion.
A repeatable earnings-review checklist
- Record the headline results: revenue, GAAP net income, diluted EPS, gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow and capex.
- Explain revenue: attribute the change to bits, ASPs and mix using only disclosed drivers.
- Inspect segment performance: identify which businesses supplied gross-margin and operating-margin expansion.
- Bridge GAAP to non-GAAP: list each adjustment and preserve separate forecast columns.
- Test cash conversion: compare operating cash flow with net income, then subtract net capex.
- Score guidance: compare actual revenue, gross margin, operating expenses and diluted EPS with the Q1 fiscal 2027 ranges.
- Check leading indicators: follow HBM, DDR5/RDIMM, PCIe Gen 6, high-capacity SSD and 1-gamma milestones into volume shipments.
- Revalue three cases: update GAAP P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-free-cash-flow under bull, base and downcycle assumptions.
- Write down falsifiers: specify the pricing, margin, capex, qualification or customer evidence that would invalidate your thesis.
What a responsible investment conclusion looks like
A positive conclusion requires more than record earnings. It should state why the current level of memory pricing is sustainable, which products and segments support the margin, how much cash remains after capex, and what valuation is acceptable if the cycle turns. A cautious conclusion is appropriate when the thesis depends on peak margins, unverified qualification economics or a target price built without explicit assumptions.
Re-run the framework after each earnings release. The decision is strongest when the operating evidence, guidance performance, cash conversion and valuation all point in the same direction; it is weakest when a high EPS number is doing all the work.
