Do not judge a bitcoin-exposed company by net income alone. Analyze two businesses separately: the operating company that sells products or services, and the bitcoin treasury that can create large accounting gains or losses. First measure revenue quality, margins, operating cash flow, recurring cash needs and debt service without bitcoin remeasurement. Then test whether the bitcoin holdings are liquid enough, unrestricted enough and large enough to support obligations after a severe price decline.
Finally, reconcile that normalized view to reported results under current accounting rules. A company can show a large profit because bitcoin appreciated while its customer business loses cash, or show a large loss while its operations remain healthy after a market sell-off. The method below keeps both facts visible.

Start with two separate financial statements in your head
Build an “operating company” view and a “bitcoin treasury” view before drawing any conclusion. Combining them at the outset lets a volatile asset overwhelm recurring performance.

- Interest, principal maturities, leases, payroll and contractual obligations.
These figures answer whether customers fund the business. They are more useful for judging durability than a net-income line containing a large unrealized bitcoin movement.
The bitcoin-treasury view
Analyze the holdings as a volatile investment and potential funding source, not as cash. Record units held, fair value, cost basis, custody arrangements, sale restrictions, counterparties and any debt secured by the coins. Calculate the holdings as a percentage of total assets and compare them with unrestricted cash and with obligations due in the next 12 to 24 months.
The two views should meet only in a cash bridge: how much money can the company actually access, when can it access it, and what price, tax, fee or covenant consequences follow?
Why bitcoin can make earnings misleading
Fair-value accounting from 2025
FASB’s Accounting Standards Update 2023-08 requires an entity to measure in-scope crypto assets at fair value each reporting period and recognize changes in fair value in net income. It applies to interim and annual periods beginning January 1, 2025. FASB said the amendments improve information by requiring disclosure of significant holdings, contractual sale restrictions and changes during the reporting period.
This creates a direct link between the market price at the reporting date and reported profit or loss. A price increase can produce income without a customer sale or cash receipt. A decline can create a loss even when the company has not sold a coin.
Transition effects and older filings
Pre-2025 reports may not be comparable. MicroStrategy’s 2024 Form 10-Q described the earlier impairment model: “any decrease in the fair value of bitcoin below our carrying value for such assets at any time since their acquisition requires us to incur an impairment charge, and such charge could be material to our financial results for the applicable reporting period.” Its 2024 Form 10-K says it adopted ASU 2023-08 on January 1, 2025, expects bitcoin volatility to increase financial-results volatility and measures bitcoin fair value using quoted prices on Coinbase.
When comparing periods, identify the accounting policy in each filing, the transition adjustment and whether management’s non-GAAP measures remove the same items. Keep GAAP results intact; use a normalized result only as an additional analytical view.

Use a bridge with four separate components:
- Operating profit from products and services.
- Financing effects, including interest, debt discounts, convertibles and preferred dividends.
- Taxes, distinguishing current cash taxes from deferred or valuation effects.
- Bitcoin fair-value gains or losses and other treasury remeasurement.
A reported profit is not evidence of operating strength until the first component remains positive after the other three are removed.
A repeatable assessment workflow
1. Fix the period and collect the primary statements
Use the latest annual report and interim filing, then note the reporting date on every figure. Gather the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, debt footnote, crypto-asset note, tax note, share-count reconciliation and risk factors. Mark whether each number is GAAP, non-GAAP, a one-time item or an estimate.

Read at least two years of operating history where the accounting policy is comparable. If a company changed to fair value on January 1, 2025, label pre-adoption periods rather than presenting a false trend.
2. Build a normalized operating result
Start with GAAP net income and remove bitcoin fair-value gains and losses. Then remove other clearly identified nonrecurring treasury items, while retaining recurring payroll, infrastructure, sales, general and administrative costs, interest and normal taxes. Do not remove costs merely because management calls them “noncash”; stock compensation, for example, can dilute owners even when it does not use current cash.

A simple bridge should show:
| Bridge item | How to treat it | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP net income | Keep unchanged | What did the company report under the applicable accounting rules? |
| Bitcoin fair-value gain or loss | Show separately and exclude for normalized operations | How much came from market remeasurement? |
| Recurring operating costs | Retain | What cash and resources does the business consume? |
| Interest, preferred dividends and recurring financing costs | Retain in a cash-coverage view | Can obligations be paid without selling bitcoin? |
| Taxes | Show current and deferred portions separately where disclosed | What amount may actually leave the company? |
3. Measure earnings quality with operating metrics
Calculate each metric independently of bitcoin returns. Use trailing-twelve-month and quarterly views when seasonality makes a single quarter unreliable.
| Metric | Calculation | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | (Current revenue − prior revenue) ÷ prior revenue | Whether demand is expanding, flat or contracting. |
| Gross margin | (Revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue | Pricing power and delivery economics. |
| Operating margin | Operating income ÷ revenue, excluding bitcoin remeasurement from the analytical view | Efficiency of the customer business. |
| Operating-cash conversion | Operating cash flow ÷ normalized operating result | Whether reported operating performance turns into cash; investigate large gaps. |
| Free cash flow | Operating cash flow − capital expenditure | Cash available before financing and discretionary treasury purchases. |
| Cash interest coverage | (Operating cash flow − maintenance capex) ÷ cash interest | Ability to pay interest from operations alone. |
Customer concentration matters alongside the ratios. Losing one major customer can overwhelm an attractive margin, while a diversified recurring-revenue base may remain resilient during a bitcoin drawdown.
4. Separate sources and uses of cash
Reconcile the change in cash. Classify inflows as customer receipts, asset sales, equity issuance, new borrowing, bitcoin sales or other financing. Classify outflows as operating costs, capital expenditure, debt service, taxes, bitcoin purchases and shareholder distributions.
Recommended Free Tools
If cash grew mainly because the company issued shares or debt, call it financing-dependent rather than self-funding. If it grew because bitcoin appreciated, that is a market-value change, not operating cash generation.
Liquidity: bitcoin is not the same as cash
Do not count the headline value of bitcoin dollar-for-dollar against near-term obligations. MicroStrategy’s 2023 Form 10-K says bitcoin has historically shown significant volatility and limited liquidity and may not serve as a liquidity source to the same extent as cash and cash equivalents. MARA’s 2025 Form 10-K similarly says a decline in bitcoin fair value reduces the cash value realizable on sale and negatively affects liquidity.

Cash-only runway = (unrestricted cash + available committed facilities) ÷ average monthly operating cash burn and debt service
Use the next 12 to 24 months of interest, principal, payroll, leases, taxes, capital expenditure and other contractual payments. Exclude restricted cash, pledged coins and facilities that require collateral the company may not be able to maintain.
Haircut case
Apply an explicit bitcoin haircut, then subtract selling costs, taxes and any restriction-related delay:
Conservative treasury value = bitcoin units × stressed price − fees − taxes − restricted or pledged amount
The haircut is an analyst assumption, not a forecast. Show several levels, such as a moderate decline, a severe decline and an extreme drawdown, and state the assumed percentage beside each result.
Forced-sale case
Model a sale during the drawdown while debt maturities remain fixed. Check market depth, custody release times, trading limits, taxes and whether a sale breaches a covenant or changes the company’s strategic policy. A balance sheet can look solvent at a quoted price yet fail a payment date if liquidation takes time or moves the market.
Financing case
Assume the company must raise capital after the decline. Estimate the new shares required at the stressed share price, the interest cost of replacement debt, collateral requirements and covenant headroom. Compare the ownership dilution with the cash shortfall; a company that survives only through repeated issuance may transfer the risk to existing shareholders.
Bitcoin concentration and custody checks
Concentration ratios
Calculate bitcoin fair value divided by total assets, bitcoin fair value divided by unrestricted cash and bitcoin-related value divided by enterprise value. Date every ratio because both the coin price and share price move. A high ratio means treasury volatility can dominate the equity story even when the operating segment is small.
Restrictions and control
Read the crypto-asset note for contractual sale restrictions, lockups, pledged collateral, custody arrangements and counterparty exposure. Determine whether the company controls private keys directly, uses a custodian, or relies on another institution’s withdrawal and settlement process. Ask whether a legal, operational or security event could delay access.

Valuation inputs
Identify the quoted markets and valuation hierarchy used for fair value. MicroStrategy’s 2024 Form 10-K identifies quoted prices on Coinbase as its measurement input. A quoted price is not the same as guaranteed proceeds for a large block; execution costs and market impact still matter.
Debt, convertibles and dilution can reverse the apparent advantage
Read every maturity schedule, not just total debt. Record principal due by year, fixed or variable interest, conversion prices, collateral, guarantees, covenants, make-whole provisions and refinancing assumptions. Add preferred-stock dividends and redemption rights to the cash burden.
Then examine equity tools: at-the-market capacity, shelf registrations, recent issuance, option overhang and management’s stated intention to raise capital. A bitcoin gain can improve book equity while doing nothing for scheduled interest. Conversely, a price decline can reduce collateral value, increase borrowing costs or force an equity raise at a depressed price.
Compare debt service first with cash-only resources, then with conservative liquidation proceeds. Do not use an optimistic bitcoin price to prove that a maturity is covered; the test is whether it remains covered in the same scenario that threatens refinancing.

Stress-test the company instead of forecasting one bitcoin price
Use a scenario table with the same operating assumptions and different treasury outcomes. Keep debt maturities fixed unless the scenario explicitly assumes a refinancing.
| Scenario | Bitcoin assumption | Operating assumption | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating baseline | Exclude appreciation and decline from normalized results | Latest sustainable revenue, margin and cash burn | Cash runway and debt service without treasury support. |
| Moderate drawdown | Apply an explicit moderate haircut | Operations unchanged | Liquidity after fees, taxes and any collateral effect. |
| Severe drawdown | Apply a materially larger haircut | Allow for weaker demand if evidence supports it | Covenant headroom, refinancing need and dilution. |
| Forced sale | Sell enough coins during the drawdown to meet obligations | Include execution delay and market impact | Whether proceeds arrive before maturities and what remains afterward. |
| Capital raise | Stressed treasury value and share price | Raise equity or debt to close the shortfall | New interest expense, collateral and ownership dilution. |
Report the minimum cash balance, month of any shortfall, debt due before the next expected inflow and the action required to avoid default. A scenario is useful only when its assumptions and consequences are visible.
A dated example of the scale problem
MicroStrategy reported approximately 152,333 bitcoins, $2.323 billion of digital assets and $66.0 million of cash and cash equivalents at June 30, 2023. Those figures are historical, not a current balance, and the comparison illustrates why a treasury-heavy balance sheet must be separated from cash liquidity. The digital-asset amount was more than thirty-five times the reported cash figure at that date, so a modest percentage move in bitcoin could exceed the company’s cash balance while leaving operating obligations unchanged.
Use the same presentation for any company: place unrestricted cash, restricted cash, bitcoin fair value, the next 12-month debt service and recurring operating burn in adjacent columns. Then show what remains after a stated price haircut. Never label the resulting bitcoin figure “cash” without explaining the assumptions behind liquidation.

A side-by-side comparison is meaningful only when the periods, accounting policies and definitions match. Use these six axes:
Best Value
| Axis | Evidence to compare | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Operating quality | Recurring revenue, gross and operating margins, customer concentration and operating cash flow | Net income rises while customer cash flow deteriorates. |
| Treasury concentration | Bitcoin fair value as a share of assets and relative to unrestricted cash | One asset dominates the balance sheet. |
| Liquidity resilience | Cash runway, restrictions, haircut sensitivity and committed facilities | Near-term obligations require an assumed sale at an unstressed price. |
| Leverage and dilution | Maturities, interest, collateral, convertibles, preferred terms and share issuance | Refinancing depends on a rising bitcoin price or repeated equity sales. |
| Accounting comparability | Fair-value adoption, transition effects, presentation and non-GAAP adjustments | One company removes losses that the other leaves in its headline metric. |
| Governance and custody | Custodians, counterparties, key controls and stated risk limits | No clear access, concentration or contingency policy. |
Rank each axis separately before forming an overall view. A company with lower bitcoin exposure may be financially stronger even if its reported bitcoin gain is smaller.
Disclosure checklist for every filing
Use the crypto-asset note, debt footnote, liquidity discussion and risk factors as a cross-check. Confirm that the filing addresses:
- Units held, fair value, cost basis and balance-sheet classification.
- Quoted-market inputs and valuation hierarchy.
- Contractual sale restrictions, custody arrangements and counterparty exposure.
- Purchases, sales, transfers and period-over-period changes.
- Debt secured by bitcoin or otherwise dependent on its value.
- Liquidity sources, planned sales, equity issuance and refinancing needs.
- Accounting-policy transition effects and comparability with prior periods.
- Tax consequences of unrealized gains, realized sales and losses.
Compare the note with the cash-flow statement. If management describes bitcoin as a liquidity source but the filing discloses restrictions or pledged amounts, use the more conservative accessible value.

Correction: Match stressed prices to fixed maturity dates and model forced sales.

Correction: Require a bridge to GAAP, a clear bitcoin adjustment and disclosure of recurring costs that remain.

Make the final judgment
Classify the company using evidence from both views:
- Operatingly healthy and treasury-resilient: recurring operations generate cash, cash-only runway covers near-term obligations and a severe haircut does not force a distressed sale or capital raise.
- Operatingly healthy but treasury-dependent: customers fund the business, yet debt service or growth plans require selling bitcoin or issuing capital after a decline.
- Operatingly weak but temporarily supported: reported earnings are strong because of bitcoin appreciation while normalized operations consume cash.
- Financially fragile: operations lose cash, unrestricted liquidity is short, maturities are near and survival depends on an unstressed bitcoin price or favorable financing.
The most decision-useful conclusion states which category fits, the reporting date, the accounting policy, the cash-only runway, the stressed treasury value and the financing action required in the downside case. Reported earnings remain important, but they are only one layer of the assessment.
